    Guided by the light: Roost choice and behaviour of urban Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus)

    1. The formation of large communal roosts is a conspicuous phenomenon associated with a wide range of bird species successfully exploiting urban environments. In many Australian cities, the abundance of the Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus), a native parrot, has increased markedly in recent decades, with the species roosting in very large numbers within suburban sites. These roosting locations are noisy and cause significant fouling of the land beneath, resulting in conflict with humans.2. We investigated the selection of roosting sites in this species in Brisbane, Australia, by comparing characteristics of both the general sites of these roosts as well as individual trees used within roosting sites and trees that were avoided.3. Lorikeets used a wide variety of tree types for roosting but demonstrated a clear preference for clumped trees within sparsely treed areas that received significantly more artificial light at night than otherwise suitable sites  and trees nearby.4. These features of roosting sites may enhance the detection of nocturnal predators by Rainbow Lorikeets, suggesting a potential positive impact of anthropogenic lighting. Our findings provide valuable insights into the management of roost-related conflicts in urban areas. We encourage further investigations into the possible benefits of artificial light

    In this paper we give a geometric parametrization to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix and the Jarlskog invariant, which is based on two flag manifolds SU(3)/U(1)2SU(3)/U(1)^{2}.     The generalization of the Jaynes-Cummings (GJC) Model is proposed. In this model, the electromagnetic radiation is described by a Hamiltonian generalizing the harmonic oscillator to take into account some nonlinear effects which can occurs in the experimental situations. The dynamical superalgebra and supercoherent states of the related model are explicitly constructed. A relevant quantities (total number of particles, energy and atomic inversion) are computed.Comment: 12 page

    Elastic, Optoelectronic and Thermal Properties of Boron Phosphide

    Elastic, mechanical, optoelectronic and some thermal properties of boron phosphide (BP) in its structure zincblende phase has been performed using the pseudopotential combined with the plane wave method. The plane-wave pseudopotential approach to the density-functional theory within the local density approximation (LDA) implemented in Abinit code is used. The elastic stiffness and compliance constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, zener anisotropy factor, young's modulus, internal strain parameter, poisson's ratio, sound velocity for directions within the important crystallographic planes, Debye temperature, melting point, refractive index, plasmon energy, force constants, lattice energy, band gap energy, homopolar energy, heteropolar energy, ionicity and dielectric constant are obtained and analyzed in comparison with the available data.     Gender Role Attitudes among Higher Education Students in Jordan

    Youth are the change agents of any society, therefore, it is critical to identify their attitudes toward gender roles. The study utilizes a social survey approach, where a stratified random sample is selected from the study population, which consists of Jordanian youth who are enrolled at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. The size of the sample is 848 youth, with 33.5% (N=284) males and 66.5% females (N=564). A survey, based on two scales, is developed to measure youth\u2019s attitudes toward gender roles: the gender professions scale and the gender skills scale. The study also examines the effect of the following variables: age, type of college, place of residence, monthly income, and educational level of the mother. The analysis uses statistical methods to recognize differences in attitudes, to understand the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, and to determine statistical significance (set at p 64 0.05). The results show that the attitudes of female youth toward gender roles are nontraditional in comparison to those of their male counterparts. Moreover, attitudes toward gender roles tend to be gender-balanced among older youth who live in urban areas, study in humanitarian colleges, and whose mother\u2019s educational level is high. The study highlights the importance of institutionalizing the concept of gender in higher educational institutions

    Coupling the image analysis and the artificial neural networks to predict a mixing time of a pharmaceutical powder

    In recent years, different laboratories were interested in predicting the mixing time of a pharmaceutical powder. In fact, a nonhomogeneous mixture may lead to under dose and/or overdose of the active ingredient in the drug product. Our study is aimed toward using a new and revolutionary approach in the field of the processes “The Artificial Neural Networks” (ANN) by using the Neural Networks ToolboxTM derived from Matlab® software. The validation of the neural network was assumed by studying others mixing powder s and then we compared the experimental results to the data obtained by the neural network calculations. It is important to properly use reconditioned parts in a production plan based on their availability and production costs. A mathematical model is derived to find the cost-optimal production strategy that incorporates reconditioned components in the manufacturing effort. New and reconditioned parts are used to carry out replacements upon failure under an unlimited free replacement warranty policy. Key production decisions, such as when remanufacturing should commence, how long the warranty period should be, and how many returned parts should be reconditioned are answered. The availability of reconditioned parts and their discounted costs are incorporated in the model. Interactions between these decisions and their impacts on the manufacturing system and the consumer are investigated. A case study on aircraft rotable spare parts will be presented

    The Effect of Creativity on Entrepreneurial Behavior: The Moderating Role of Demographics

    This study aims to determine the effect of creativity on entrepreneurial behavior with demographics as a moderating variable. Creativity is critical for improving entrepreneurial behavior (EB). However, few studies exist in the literature about this topic in developing countries. Building on the literature, the study proposed a positive effect between creativity and entrepreneurial behavior. The study also proposed the demographic variables as moderating variables. The population of the study consists of all the entrepreneurs and workers at entrepreneurial enterprises in Jordan. The sample of study was composed of 155 respondents; the responses were gathered using the convenience sampling method. Simple linear regression and hierarchical regression were employed to examine the data. Results show a significant effect of creativity on entrepreneurial behavior. The results also demonstrate that none of the demographic characteristics produce a significant statistical change in the influence of creativity on EB. More studies on creativity and its impact on the EB of firms and employees at entrepreneurial firms are needed

    Behavior of Droplets in Microfluidic System with T-Junction

    Micro droplet formation is considered as a growing emerging area of research due to its wide-range application in chemistry as well as biology. The mechanism of micro droplet formation using two immiscible liquids running through a T-junction has been widely studied. We believe that the flow of these two immiscible phases can be of greater important factor that could have an impact on out-flow hydrodynamic behavior, the droplets generated and the size of the droplets. In this study, the type of the capillary tubes used also represents another important factor that can have an impact on the generation of micro droplets. The tygon capillary tubing with hydrophilic inner surface doesn't allow regular out-flows due to the fact that the continuous phase doesn't adhere to the wall of the capillary inner surface. Teflon capillary tubing, presents better wettability than tygon tubing, and allows to obtain steady and regular regimes of out-flow, and the micro droplets are homogeneoussize. The size of the droplets is directly dependent on the flows of the continuous and dispersed phases. Thus, as increasing the flow of the continuous phase, to flow of the dispersed phase stationary, the size of the drops decreases. Inversely, while increasing the flow of the dispersed phase, to flow of the continuous phase stationary, the size of the droplet increases
