The aim was to carry out a reflection on the performance of the Permanent Education Committee in Nursing in a tertiary hospital for in-service training of the nursing staff on the care of patients with Covid-19, as well as their challenges and strategies. Theoretical-reflective study on permanent education actions on nursing care in Covid-19 in a public tertiary hospital in Ceará. Strategies adopted were the elaboration of a flowchart of paramentation / deparamentation, conducting standard operating procedure (SOP) and realistic workshops. 70 workshops were held with 313 professional nursing participants, with an average duration of two hours each. Initially, insecurity in the care of patients with Covid-19 was detected, but the workshops held enabled the acquisition of practical and safe skills in the use of PPE. However, the high turnover of these professionals, resulting from the precariousness of the bond and labor rights, was a challenge that still requires extensive political discussion, for greater appreciation of nursing, which has been strongly fighting in this pandemic.

Objective: to analyze the effect of reading an educational booklet about sickle cell disease related to family members’ knowledge. Methods: quasi-experimental study, with 20 children´s family members with sickle cell disease. A form was used before and 30 days after medical consultation (pre- and post-test). The booklet was given to the family member on the day of the consultation. Analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Science version 20 with the Shapiro-Wilk, Student’s t, McNemar’s chi-square and Odds Ratio statistical tests. Results: all participants were female, mostly mothers aged 20 to 30 years with high school education. The analysis revealed increase in the number of correct answers after reading the booklet with statistical significance (p<0.001). Conclusion: the reading of the booklet and the strategies used to encourage it contributed to increase the knowledge of family members about some disease aspects, enabling them to better deal with this disease

Purpose: Digit ratio (2D:4D) has been considered as a proxy biomarker for prenatal hormonal exposure and may represent an individual’s predisposition to breast cancer. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether there is a link between digit ratio and breast cancer in a Brazilian population. Methods: Digital measurements of the lengths of the index and ring fingers of both hands were obtained from women with breast cancer (n = 100) and age-matched controls (n = 100) using a digital Vernier calliper. Mean digit ratios of right hands, left hands, and right minus left hand 2D:4D (DR-L) were compared between both groups. Data were analysed by the Student's t-test for unpaired samples, Mann-Whitney test, and Spearman`s correlation with a significance level of 5%.Results: The patients with breast cancer presented significantly higher right and left 2D:4D (both p < 0.001) and higher DR-L (p = 0.032) than controls. Among breast cancer cases, there was a significantly negative correlation between left 2D:4D and age diagnosed with breast cancer (p = 0.018).Conclusion: Digit ratio offers a valid retrospective biomarker of action of prenatal hormones and might be associated with breast cancer risk and age at onset of breast cancer. It suggests that higher exposure or sensitivity to prenatal oestrogen might be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer and with earlier onset of the disease

NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics

No full text
Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set. Please cite this data paper when using its data in publications. We also request that researchers and teachers inform us of how they are using these data
