Induction of \u3cem\u3eIL19\u3c/em\u3e Expression through JNK and cGAS-STING Modulates DNA DamageāInduced Cytokine Production
Cytokine production is a critical component of cell-extrinsic responses to DNA damage and cellular senescence. Here, we demonstrated that expression of the gene encoding interleukin-19 (IL-19) was enhanced by DNA damage through pathways mediated by c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK) and cGAS-STING and that IL19 expression was required for the subsequent production of the cytokines IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8. IL19 expression was stimulated by diverse cellular stresses, including inhibition of the DNA replication checkpoint kinase ATR (ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related protein), oncogene expression, replicative exhaustion, oxidative stress, and DNA double-strand breaks. Unlike the production of IL-6 and IL-8, IL19 expression was not affected by abrogation of signaling by the IL-1 receptor (IL-1R) or the mitogen-activated protein kinase p38. Instead, the DNA damageāinduced production of IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8 was substantially reduced by suppression of IL19 expression. The signaling pathways required to stimulate IL19 expression selectively depended on the type of DNA-damaging agent. Reactive oxygen species and the ASK1-JNK pathway were critical for responses to ionizing radiation (IR), whereas the cGAS-STING pathway stimulated IL19 expression in response to either IR or ATR inhibition. Whereas induction of IL1, IL6, and IL8 by IR depended on IL19 expression, the cGAS-STINGādependent induction of the immune checkpoint gene PDL1 after IR and ATR inhibition was independent of IL19. Together, these results suggest that IL-19 production by diverse pathways forms a distinct cytokine regulatory arm of the response to DNA damage

Biomass Resource Allocation among Competing End Uses
The Biomass Scenario Model (BSM) is a system dynamics model developed by the U.S. Department of Energy as a tool to better understand the interaction of complex policies and their potential effects on the biofuels industry in the United States. However, it does not currently have the capability to account for allocation of biomass resources among the various end uses, which limits its utilization in analysis of policies that target biomass uses outside the biofuels industry. This report provides a more holistic understanding of the dynamics surrounding the allocation of biomass among uses that include traditional use, wood pellet exports, bio-based products and bioproducts, biopower, and biofuels by (1) highlighting the methods used in existing models' treatments of competition for biomass resources; (2) identifying coverage and gaps in industry data regarding the competing end uses; and (3) exploring options for developing models of biomass allocation that could be integrated with the BSM to actively exchange and incorporate relevant information

The Samoan Passage experiment was designed to determine the northward transport of abyssal water through the Samoan Passage (l0Ā°S, 170Ā°W). This topographic constriction forms the major connection for deep (>4000 m) interbasin flow between hemispheres in the Pacific (Figure 1). This report presents current meter data from the six subsurface moorings deployed in the Samoan Passage in September 1992 and recovered February 1994.
The six subsurface moorings were deployed along a transect in the Samoan Passage (Figure 2). A total of twenty-seven current meters were attached, each measuring horizontal current and temperature, with the upper two meters on each mooring measuring pressure. All instrumentation was recovered. Instrument 5872, the top meter on mooring two experienced an electronic board failure after 5 days and stopped recording data. The pressure sensor on instrument 4412, 2990 m on mooring 1, abruptly changed levels several times, and the temperature record from instrument 5856, 2970 m on mooring six, malfunctioned after 9 months. The compass on instrument 7769 (4900 m on mooring three) failed its post-cruise calibration. It appears that the failure occurred approximately one-fourth of the way through the deployment. Because the data are vector-averages, both speed and direction are suspect. The quality of the remaining records was excellent.

Neuroprotective Actions of Estradiol and Novel Estrogen Analogs in Ischemia: Translational Implications
This review highlights our investigations into the neuroprotective efficacy of estradiol and other estrogenic agents in a clinically relevant animal model of transient global ischemia, which causes selective, delayed death of hippocampal CA1 neurons and associated cognitive deficits. We find that estradiol rescues a significant number of CA1 pyramidal neurons that would otherwise die in response to global ischemia, and this is true when hormone is provided as a long-term pretreatment at physiological doses or as an acute treatment at the time of reperfusion. In addition to enhancing neuronal survival, both forms of estradiol treatment induce measurable cognitive benefit in young animals. Moreover, estradiol and estrogen analogs that do not bind classical nuclear estrogen receptors retain their neuroprotective efficacy in middle-aged females deprived of ovarian hormones for a prolonged duration (8 weeks). Thus, non-feminizing estrogens may represent a new therapeutic approach for treating the neuronal damage associated with global ischemia
