Following an introduction to the Middle Eastern nation in its context is a map showing the location and distribution of major universities. The aim is to outline the Jordanian business education system in general then contrast a public and private university to illustrate the system. Findings show public universities are more than twice as overcrowded as private and there is generally a high unemployment rate for university graduates particularly in humanity fields and for women. However business education has about one quarter of graduates not officially accounted for in available employment figures. Ten to 15% of students in business faculties are from outside Jordan, demonstrating the importance of education as an income source for this poor nation otherwise lacking natural resources. However the downside of 20% of GDP invested in educational provision is the more than 20% graduate brain drain to the neighbouring nations and abroad. To conclude, tertiary problems are summarised together with resulting challenges, Ministry strategic plans and recommendations. Different immunological mechanisms govern protection from experimental stroke in young and older mice with recombinant TCR ligand therapy

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. The lack of clinical success in stroke therapies can be attributed, in part, to inadequate basic research on aging rodents. The current study demonstrates that recombinant TCR ligand therapy uses different immunological mechanisms to protect young and older mice from experimental stroke. In young mice, RTL1000 therapy inhibited splenocyte efflux while reducing frequency of T cells and macrophages in the spleen. Older mice treated with RTL1000 exhibited a significant reduction in inflammatory cells in the brain and inhibition of splenic atrophy. Our data suggest age specific differences in immune response to stroke that allow unique targeting of stroke immunotherapies

The determinants and consequences of corporate social responsibility disclosure : the case of Jordan

    Get PDF
This study focuses on investigating the determinants and consequences of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure (CSRD) in Jordan. The study examines factors that influences CSR disclosure extent and quality, such as corporate characteristics (size, gearing, firm’s age, and industry type), corporate governance (board size, number of meetings, non-executive directors, female directors in the board, family directors in the board, foreign members, audit committee, type of external auditors, and CEO duality) and ownership structure (government ownership, institutional ownership, and ownership concentration). A quantitative approach is adopted for this research, and a content analysis technique is used to gather CSR disclosure extent and quality from the annual reports. The sample is withdrawn from the annual reports of 118 Jordanian companies over the period of 2010-2015. A CSRD index is constructed, and includes the disclosures of the following categories; environmental, human resources, product and consumers, and Community involvement. A 7 point-scale measurement was developed to examine the quality of disclosure. This study fills the gap in the literature regarding CSRD in Jordan, and the fact that all the previous studies have ignored charts and images as a measurement of quality. The result shows that the extent of CSRD is higher than the quality in Jordan. Regarding the determinates of CSR disclosures, the following factors were found to have a significant relationship with both extent and quality of CSRD except non-executives, which was only found significant with the extent of CSRD: board size, non-executive directors, firm’s age, foreign members on the board, number of boards meetings, the presence of audit committees, big 4, government ownership, firm’s size, industry type. With regard to CSRD consequences, the result shows that CSRD has a positive and significant impact on company performance (ROA) and market value. This result provides evidence for policy makers (Jordan security commission) of the importance of CSRD and its impact on company’s performance, and that companies should consider this type of disclosure more in their annual reports. They also have to consider introducing new laws that mandate CSR disclosures, since it has many advantages for the companies and society in general

An Extension of PlusCal for Modeling Distributed Algorithms

    Get PDF
International audienceThe PlusCal language combines the expressive power of TLA+ with the “look and feel” of imperative pseudo-code in order to allow users to express algorithms at a high level of abstraction. PlusCal algorithms are translated to TLA+ specifications and can be formally verified using the TLA+ Toolbox. We propose a small extension of PlusCal, tentatively called Distributed PlusCal, intended for simplifying the presentation of distributed algorithms in PlusCal.Distributed systems consist of nodes that communicate by message passing. It is convenient to model a node as running several threads that share local memory. For example, one thread may execute the main algorithm, while a separate thread listens for incoming messages. Although PlusCal offers processes, they have a single thread of execution. Different threads of the same node must therefore be modeled as individual processes, and variables representing the local memory of a node must be declared as global variables, obscuring the structure of the code. Our first extension allows a PlusCal process to have several code blocks that execute in parallel. Besides, Distributed PlusCal explicitly identifies variables representing communication channels and introduces associated send and receive operations. In contrast to using ordinary variables and writing macros or operator definitions for channel operations, making channels part of the language gives us some more flexibility in the TLA+ translation

The impact of gender diversity on digital reporting in the USA

    Get PDF
This study aims to examine the impact of gender diversity on the digital reporting practices of non-financial U.S. firms listed on the S&P 500 index. Our results confirm the proposed hypothesis, indicating that the presence of female board members improves the levels of digital reporting. This could relate to the thought that gender diversity may correspond to more extensive discussions within the boardroom, which leads to better-informed decisions based on greater levels of information exchange both between the board and other stakeholders and amongst board members themselves. Our findings provide evidence for policy makers that gender diversity enhances online disclosure and thus, the transparency of the firm. The findings can be used, also, by corporate governance institutions to raise awareness of the advantages of having female members on the board. Our study contributes to the body of literature on both gender diversity and corporate online disclosure by providing new evidence that gender diversity on the board can improve digital reporting

Apolipoprotein E4 Mediates Insulin Resistance-Associated Cerebrovascular Dysfunction and the Post-Prandial Response

    Get PDF
Metabolic dysfunction, commonly a result of diets high in saturated fats and sugar, is associated with impaired cognitive function and an increased risk of age-related cognitive decline (ACD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Compared to the E3 isoform of apolipoprotein (apoE), the E4 isoform is a major genetic risk factor for ACD, AD, and for developing cognitive impairments following various environmental challenges, including dietary challenges such as a high-fat diet (HFD). Both insulin resistance (IR) and E4 are associated with metabolic and vascular impairments. Deficits in cerebral metabolism and cerebrovascular function have been proposed as initiating events leading to these impairments. In the current study, we employed a model of human apoE targeted replacement mice and HFD-induced obesity to study the potential link between E4 and IR, at rest and following a postprandial challenge. HFD-induced IR was associated with impaired cognition, reduced cerebral blood volume and decreased glucose uptake. These effects were more profound in E4 than E3 mice. Furthermore, the cognitive, metabolic and cerebrovascular responses to an exogenous glucose load showed an apoE isoform-dependent response, with E4, but not E3 mice, acutely benefiting from a spike in blood glucose
