Non-Unitary Neutrino Propagation From Neutrino Decay
Neutrino propagation in space-time is not constrained to be unitary if very
light states - lighter than the active neutrinos - exist into which neutrinos
may decay. If this is the case, neutrino flavor-change is governed by a handful
of extra mixing and "oscillation" parameters, including new sources of
CP-invariance violation. We compute the transition probabilities in the two-
and three-flavor scenarios and discuss the different phenomenological
consequences of the new physics. These are qualitatively different from other
sources of unitarity violation discussed in the literature.Comment: 8 pages, no figure
Phenotypic selection under two contrasting environments in wild sunflower and its crop‐wild hybrid
Hybridization is a common phenomenon in plants and can lead to the introgression of alleles from one population into another, generate new hybrid lineages, or cause species extinction. The environmental conditions and the genetic background of the participating populations may influence these outcomes since they can affect the fitness of hybrids, thereby increasing or decreasing the chances of introgression. Thus, it is important to understand the context‐dependent prospects for introgression of alleles into diverse populations and under multiple ecological environments. Crop‐wild hybridization presents an opportunity to explore these dynamics in agroecosystems. To this end, we used diverse wild and hybrid sunflowers from across the northern United States as a basis for evaluating variation in morphological traits and assessing context‐dependence selection. These crop‐wild hybrids and their wild counterparts were grown under agricultural conditions in the field with and without wheat competition. Interactions between origin and cross type affected expression of early functional traits, while interactions between competition and cross type acted on reproductive traits. A smattering of early and reproductive traits were affected by interactions between cross type and competition that varied by origin (i.e., 3‐way interactions). Seven functional traits, especially number of branches and tertiary head diameter, underwent net and direct directional selection, while six out of these seven traits appear to also be experiencing non‐linear selection dynamics. In general, wild‐like traits were favored under both sets of conditions, while, under wheat competition, some crop‐like traits related to fast growth and primary head diameter became important. These data reaffirm the hypothesis that stressful conditions establish a scenario more suitable for crop introgression and clarify that non‐linear selection dynamics may play a role in this process.Fil: Presotto, Alejandro Daniel.
The acetabular fixation by impaction has advantages on other systems of fixing in the cementless arthroplaties of the hip. Permit a better contact between implant and bone and it does not need destruction of the receiving bony surface. The new designs for fixation by impaction are manufactured in titanium alloys and possess a rugged surface cover at the same time with hyrdoxiapatite-coated. Some models as the arthroplasty Bihapro possess fins for primary stability in your external curbing to avoid the initial rotary mobilization. This system of fixation is showing good results in the known experience and though the periods of follow-up are yet short, the obtained bony integration is satisfactory. We presented the results of 117 Bihapro cups implanted with a follow-up from one to seven years, that they have followed a computed protocol. Structure of Thermoreversible Poly(vinyl alcohol) Cryo-Hydrogels as studied by Proton Low Field NMR Spectroscopy
The network structure of Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels obtained by freezing-thawing cycles was investigated by solid state 1H low field NMR spectroscopy. By application of multiple-quantum NMR experiments, we obtain information about the segmental order parameter, which is directly related to the restrictions to chain motion (crosslinks) formed upon gelation. These measurements indicate that the network mesh size, as well as the relative amount of non-elastic defects (i.e. non-crosslinked chains, dangling chains, loops) decreases with the number of freezing-thawing cycles, but it is independent of the polymer concentration. The formation of the PVA network is accompanied by an increasing fraction of polymer with fast magnetization decay (∼20μs). The quantitative study of this rigid phase with a specific refocusing pulse sequence shows that it is composed of a primary crystalline polymer phase (around 5%), which constitutes the main support of the network structure and determines the mesh size, and a secondary population of more imperfect crystallites, which increase the number of elastic chain segments in the polymer gel but does not affect the average network mesh size appreciably. Correspondingly, progressive melting of the secondary crystallites with increasing temperature does not affect the network mesh size but only the amount of network defects, and melting of the main PVA crystallites at around 80 ºC leads to destruction of the network gel and formation of an isotropic PVA solution.Peer reviewe
Deep Learning for Diagonal Earlobe Crease Detection
An article published on Medical News Today in June 2022 presented a
fundamental question in its title: Can an earlobe crease predict heart attacks?
The author explained that end arteries supply the heart and ears. In other
words, if they lose blood supply, no other arteries can take over, resulting in
tissue damage. Consequently, some earlobes have a diagonal crease, line, or
deep fold that resembles a wrinkle. In this paper, we take a step toward
detecting this specific marker, commonly known as DELC or Frank's Sign. For
this reason, we have made the first DELC dataset available to the public. In
addition, we have investigated the performance of numerous cutting-edge
backbones on annotated photos. Experimentally, we demonstrate that it is
possible to solve this challenge by combining pre-trained encoders with a
customized classifier to achieve 97.7% accuracy. Moreover, we have analyzed the
backbone trade-off between performance and size, estimating MobileNet as the
most promising encoder.Comment: Accepted at 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition

Phenomenological aspects of the fermion and scalar sectors of a flavored 3-3-1 model
We propose a viable and predictive model based on the gauge symmetry, supplemented by the global symmetry,
the family symmetry and several auxiliary cyclic symmetries, which
successfully reproduces the observed SM fermion mass and mixing pattern. The SM
charged fermion mass and quark mixing hierarchy is caused by the spontaneous
breaking of the discrete symmetries, whereas the tiny active neutrino masses
are generated through an inverse seesaw mechanism mediated by right-handed
Majorana neutrinos. The model is consistent with the SM fermion masses and
mixings and successfully accommodates the current Higgs diphoton decay rate
constraints as well as the constraints arising from oblique , and
parameters and meson oscillations.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure
Polarized cortical tension drives zebrafish epiboly movements
The principles underlying the biomechanics of morphogenesis are
largely unknown. Epiboly is an essential embryonic event in which
three tissues coordinate to direct the expansion of the blastoderm.
How and where forces are generated during epiboly, and how
these are globally coupled remains elusive. Here we developed a
method, hydrodynamic regression (HR), to infer 3D pressure fields,
mechanical power, and cortical surface tension profiles. HR is
based on velocity measurements retrieved from 2D+T microscopy
and their hydrodynamic modeling. We applied HR to identify
biomechanically active structures and changes in cortex local
tension during epiboly in zebrafish. Based on our results, we
propose a novel physical description for epiboly, where tissue
movements are directed by a polarized gradient of cortical tension.
We found that this gradient relies on local contractile forces at the
cortex, differences in elastic properties between cortex components
and the passive transmission of forces within the yolk cell.
All in all, our work identifies a novel way to physically regulate
concerted cellular movements that might be instrumental for the
mechanical control of many morphogenetic processes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

The supplementary fixation with screws non-cemented acetabular hemispheric components is used to provide primary stability to the implants. However, their use has been associated to a bigger risk of neurological and vascular damage, characteristic complications of the screws and osteolysis. The X-rays of 30 non-cemented acetabular cups model Bihapro supplemented with screws have been studied retrospectively with a 5 year-old minimum follow-up. It was also used an analysis program and computer store of images. No neurological or vascular damage took place. Any mobilization of the cup was not appreciated and only in one case of an osteolytic area was observed around a screw in a patient who unfderwent revision surgery. The digitalization of images is a technique that allows among other advantages to graduate periprosthetic bone densities facilitating an early diagnose of lytic areas and prosthetic micromovements eliminating the observer's subjectivity
