Food poisonings in dogs â in the home environment
livsmedelsförgiftningar hos hund i hemmiljö.
hos hundar runtom i Sverige. There are a number of substances in our households that can be potentially poisonous to dogs. The
most common way dogs get poisoned is through ingestion, often because of an accident where the
dog consumes something poisonous, or because the owner unknowingly feeds poisonous food to the
dog. The best way to prevent poisoning is to ensure that the animal doesnât have access to any
poisonous substances. Therefore, the ownerâs knowledge regarding potentially poisonous foods in
the household is an important part of prevention. The aim of this study was to examine which
symptoms dogs show when poisoned by the foods chocolate, xylitol and onion, and to describe the
best way to treat and care for these dogs. The aim was also to examine the knowledge among owners
regarding what food that potentially can cause food poisoning in dogs, and to investigate how
owners prefer to receive information regarding these potentially poisonous foods.
A literature review was conducted to collect scientific information regarding food poisonings in
dogs, with focus on chocolate, xylitol and onion. When a dog is poisoned by chocolate, xylitol or
onion, many different symptoms can arise. Results from the literature study were generally
consistent with regards to symptoms for each poisoning. However, the dogâs symptoms can differ
depending on the individual, the amount of poisonous food the dog has eaten and how long time itâs
been since consumption. Treatment and care are tailored to the dogâs condition and can vary
depending on when the poisonous food was consumed. To initiate the right treatment and care in
time can be crucial for the dogâs survival.
To determine ownersâ knowledge regarding potentially poisonous foods to dogs, a survey was
conducted. The survey was taken by 983 dog owners/previous dog owners. The result showed a
significant difference in knowledge regarding to whether a food is poisonous or not between the
different foods. The respondents showed better knowledge regarding the foods that are more
common to cause poisoning in dogs (chocolate, grapes, onion, raisins, xylitol and garlic), and less
knowledge regarding the foods avocado, raw potato and coffee. The result from the survey also
showed that dog owners prefer to receive information regarding food poisoning in dogs through
email. Consequently, there is a need to inform dog owners regarding potentially poisonous foods in
order to prevent both unnecessary harm and death in Swedish dogs
Cardiovasc Res
The hemostatic system is pivotal to maintaining vascular integrity. Multiple components involved in blood coagulation have central functions in inflammation and immunity. A derailed hemostasis is common in prevalent pathologies such as sepsis, cardiovascular disorders and, lately, COVID-19. Physiological mechanisms limit the deleterious consequences of a hyperactivated hemostatic system through adaptive changes in gene expression. While this is mainly regulated at the level of transcription, co- and posttranscriptional mechanisms are increasingly perceived as central hubs governing multiple facets of the hemostatic system. This layer of regulation modulates the biogenesis of hemostatic components, for example in situations of increased turnover and demand. However, they can also be 'hijacked' in disease processes, thereby perpetuating and even causally entertaining associated pathologies. This review summarizes examples and emerging concepts that illustrate the importance of posttranscriptional mechanisms in hemostatic control and crosstalk with the immune system. It also discusses how such regulatory principles can be used to usher in new therapeutic concepts to combat global medical threats such as sepsis or cardiovascular disorders
