Localized state and charge transfer in nitrogen-doped graphene

    Get PDF
Nitrogen-doped epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(000?1) was prepared by exposing the surface to an atomic nitrogen flux. Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Spectroscopy (STS), supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the simple substitution of carbon by nitrogen atoms has been identified as the most common doping configuration. High-resolution images reveal a reduction of local charge density on top of the nitrogen atoms, indicating a charge transfer to the neighboring carbon atoms. For the first time, local STS spectra clearly evidenced the energy levels associated with the chemical doping by nitrogen, localized in the conduction band. Various other nitrogen-related defects have been observed. The bias dependence of their topographic signatures demonstrates the presence of structural configurations more complex than substitution as well as hole-doping.Comment: 5 pages, accepted in PR

Pi-stacking functionalization through micelles swelling: Application to the synthesis of single wall carbon nanotube/porphyrin complexes for energy transfer

We report on a new, orginal and efficient method for "pi-stacking" functionalization of single wall carbon nanotubes. This method is applied to the synthesis of a high-yield light-harvesting system combining single wall carbon nanotubes and porphyrin molecules. We developed a micelle swelling technique that leads to controlled and stable complexes presenting an efficient energy transfer. We demonstrate the key role of the organic solvent in the functionalization mechanism. By swelling the micelles, the solvent helps the non water soluble porphyrins to reach the micelle core and allows a strong enhancement of the interaction between porphyrins and nanotubes. This technique opens new avenues for the functionalization of carbon nanostructures.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

A Formal Approach to Distinguish Games, Toys, Serious Games & Toys, Serious Re-purposing & Modding and Simulators

    Get PDF
While the concept of serious game has considerably evolved in the last two decades, it still needs to be clearly differentiated from other types of artifacts. Thus, for most outside the domain, there is a degree of confusion about the relationship between serious games and other related applications such as simulators or the re-purposing of entertainment games within educational practices. This article proposes a formal approach towards classifying Games, Toys, Serious Games, Serious Toys, Serious Re-purposing & Modding and Simulators. The aim of this theoretical work is twofold. Firstly, on a practical level, this approach aims at helping actors from different ecosystems, such as health, for instance, to differentiate between these various devices and use them to their best advantage. Secondly, from a research perspective, based on a formal approach, our work aims to contribute to the development of a taxonomy for gamified intervention with serious purposes. This formal approach allows us to demonstrate that unique combinations can be proposed to distinguish each kind of application. In this context, Serious Games can be seen as a specific purpose and not as a synonym for other existing applications

High precision astrometry mission for the detection and characterization of nearby habitable planetary systems with the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope (NEAT)

(abridged) A complete census of planetary systems around a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars (FGK dwarfs) in the Solar neighborhood with uniform sensitivity down to Earth-mass planets within their Habitable Zones out to several AUs would be a major milestone in extrasolar planets astrophysics. This fundamental goal can be achieved with a mission concept such as NEAT - the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope. NEAT is designed to carry out space-borne extremely-high-precision astrometric measurements sufficient to detect dynamical effects due to orbiting planets of mass even lower than Earth's around the nearest stars. Such a survey mission would provide the actual planetary masses and the full orbital geometry for all the components of the detected planetary systems down to the Earth-mass limit. The NEAT performance limits can be achieved by carrying out differential astrometry between the targets and a set of suitable reference stars in the field. The NEAT instrument design consists of an off-axis parabola single-mirror telescope, a detector with a large field of view made of small movable CCDs located around a fixed central CCD, and an interferometric calibration system originating from metrology fibers located at the primary mirror. The proposed mission architecture relies on the use of two satellites operating at L2 for 5 years, flying in formation and offering a capability of more than 20,000 reconfigurations (alternative option uses deployable boom). The NEAT primary science program will encompass an astrometric survey of our 200 closest F-, G- and K-type stellar neighbors, with an average of 50 visits. The remaining time might be allocated to improve the characterization of the architecture of selected planetary systems around nearby targets of specific interest (low-mass stars, young stars, etc.) discovered by Gaia, ground-based high-precision radial-velocity surveys.Comment: Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy.
