Highest Cusped Waves for the Fractional KdV Equations

In this paper we prove the existence of highest, cusped, traveling wave solutions for the fractional KdV equations ft+ffx=Dαfxf_t + f f_x = |D|^{\alpha} f_x for all α(1,0)\alpha \in (-1,0) and give their exact leading asymptotic behavior at zero. The proof combines careful asymptotic analysis and a computer-assisted approach.Comment: 86 pages, 6 figure

An Experimental Investigation of the Functional Relationship between Social Phobia and Cigarette Smoking

    Get PDF
Individuals with Social Phobia (SP) represent a large group with elevated rates of cigarette smoking and cessation rates lower than that of individuals without psychopathology. For individuals with SP, cigarette smoking may be used to reduce social anxiety in anticipation of and during social situations, however, no study to date has experimentally examined this function. The aim of the current study was to experimentally examine the functional relationship between cigarette smoking and SP as a function of induced social stress. Results indicated that high SP individuals experienced significant decreases in negative affect following smoking a cigarette when experiencing social stress. This effect was specific to high SP individuals under social stress condition and was not observed among individuals average in SP or when examining changes in positive affect. Findings are discussed in the context of understanding risk factors for smoking initiation and maintenance as well the development of efficacious interventions

Estimating mass-wasting processes in active earth slides – earth flows with time-series of High-Resolution DEMs from photogrammetry and airborne LiDAR

Abstract. This paper deals with the use of time-series of High-Resolution Digital Elevation Models (HR DEMs) obtained from photogrammetry and airborne LiDAR coupled with aerial photos, to analyse the magnitude of recently reactivated large scale earth slides – earth flows located in the northern Apennines of Italy. The landslides underwent complete reactivation between 2001 and 2006, causing civil protection emergencies. With the final aim to support hazard assessment and the planning of mitigation measures, high-resolution DEMs are used to identify, quantify and visualize depletion and accumulation in the slope resulting from the reactivation of the mass movements. This information allows to quantify mass wasting, i.e. the amount of landslide material that is wasted during reactivation events due to stream erosion along the slope and at its bottom, resulting in sediment discharge into the local fluvial system, and to assess the total volumetric magnitude of the events. By quantifying and visualising elevation changes at the slope scale, results are also a valuable support for the comprehension of geomorphological processes acting behind the evolution of the analysed landslides

Research poster describing: Prehabilitation (prehab) is the stage of cancer rehabilitation between diagnosis and acute intervention that utilizes targeted physical activity to “reduce severity of current and future impairments.” The purpose of this literature review was to develop a theoretical framework for future research and guidance for implementation of effective prehab for gastrointestinal cancer survivors undergoing surgical treatment in Maine.https://dune.une.edu/cecespring2020/1002/thumbnail.jp

High Loading Efficiency and Controlled Release of Bioactive Immunotherapeutic Proteins Using Vaterite Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles may limit off-tumor/on-target ubiquitous activation of signaling by protein-based drugs. However, many challenges still exist in the design of a nanoparticle for protein delivery. In this study, conditions to establish vaterite nanoparticles as a pH-sensitive drug delivery system (DDS) for encapsulated protein drugs are comprehensively evaluated. Low coprecipitation pH of vaterite and protein prevents protein denaturation and yields high loading efficiency. Unprotected vaterite recrystallizes in aqueous solutions within 3 h to calcite and releases the loaded protein completely, but surface-modified particles with carboxyl groups containing polymers prove stable for more than 5 months. Notably, modification of vaterite with sulfonated polymers increases the loading of cationic proteins by a multiple. A system is developed for vaterite exposure to (pH) conditions under body-like-flow rates, with the dissolution of vaterite and simultaneous release of active proteins at tumor microenvironmental pH reaching up to 80% and only 20% at physiological pH within 2 h. Importantly, the immunomodulatory protein tumor necrosis factor preserves its native structure and fully retains functional activity in vitro after release from the particles. In conclusion, the studies described here provide a framework for the development of vaterite-based DDS as a carrier for bioactive protein-based therapeutics

Research poster documenting the following project: The University of New England (UNE) collaborated with local recovery centers to create an interdisciplinary service learning partnership. Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program explored the role of PT in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) recovery in an elective course. Three interactive PT related sessions were developed for the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Pinetree Recovery Center with the purpose of providing tools for physical activity to aid in the SUD recovery process.https://dune.une.edu/cecespring2020/1009/thumbnail.jp

The title compound, C15H12N2OS2, is an example of a push–pull butadiene in which the electron-releasing methylsulfanyl groups and electron-withdrawing nitrile groups on either end of the butadiene chain enhance the conjugation in the system. Short intramolecular C—H⋯S interactions are observed. In the crystal structure, an O⋯C short contact of 2.917 (3) Å is observed

Smokers' Likelihood to Engage With Information and Misinformation on Twitter About the Relative Harms of e-Cigarette Use:Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND: Information and misinformation on the internet about e-cigarette harms may increase smokers’ misperceptions of e-cigarettes. There is limited research on smokers’ engagement with information and misinformation about e-cigarettes on social media. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed smokers’ likelihood to engage with—defined as replying, retweeting, liking, and sharing—tweets that contain information and misinformation and uncertainty about the harms of e-cigarettes. METHODS: We conducted a web-based randomized controlled trial among 2400 UK and US adult smokers who did not vape in the past 30 days. Participants were randomly assigned to view four tweets in one of four conditions: (1) e-cigarettes are as harmful or more harmful than smoking, (2) e-cigarettes are completely harmless, (3) uncertainty about e-cigarette harms, or (4) control (physical activity). The outcome measure was participants’ likelihood of engaging with tweets, which comprised the sum of whether they would reply, retweet, like, and share each tweet. We fitted Poisson regression models to predict the likelihood of engagement with tweets among 974 Twitter users and 1287 non-Twitter social media users, adjusting for covariates and stratified by UK and US participants. RESULTS: Among Twitter users, participants were more likely to engage with tweets in condition 1 (e-cigarettes are as harmful or more harmful than smoking) than in condition 2 (e-cigarettes are completely harmless). Among other social media users, participants were more likely to likely to engage with tweets in condition 1 than in conditions 2 and 3 (e-cigarettes are completely harmless and uncertainty about e-cigarette harms). CONCLUSIONS: Tweets stating information and misinformation that e-cigarettes were as harmful or more harmful than smoking regular cigarettes may receive higher engagement than tweets indicating e-cigarettes were completely harmless.
