The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has several clinical manifestations, highlighting a large number of cases and deaths in patients with specific comorbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, the objective was to analyze the role of the cardiovascular system in SARS-CoV-2 infection and complications in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular alterations. For this, a systematic search was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases (Lilacs) and PubMed/Medline, using the association of descriptors: (“Cardiovascular System” OR Cardiovascular Diseases OR “Heart Failure” OR “Hypertension” OR “Cardiac Insufficieny”) AND (“COVID 19”). Original studies published from 2020 onwards were included. Results: About 16/18 studies dealt with complications and 2 with a higher rate of infection in patients with preexisting CVD. The cardiovascular comorbidity most associated with the severity of COVID-19 was systemic arterial hypertension. And through a meta-analysis of the included studies, it was concluded that previously hypertensive patients may be up to 2.49 times more likely to have a worse prognosis. Related to a higher infection rate, both studies showed that patients with SAH have a greater amount of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE 2), which functions as a receptor for the binding of SAR-CoV-2, presenting a potentially greater risk of infection. The 16 studies on complications associated the manifestations of venous, arterial and microvascular thrombosis with increased prothrombotic signaling and increased release of von Willebrand factor and platelet activation/aggregation, in addition to increased anti-fibrinolytic and immunoactivating activity specific to cardiac fibroblasts in the hearts of patients with COVID-19. Severe cases were associated with systemic microcirculatory changes with endothelial dysfunction, higher troponin levels, higher values of inflammatory markers, with pro-inflammatory and procoagulant status, atrial fibrillation, and high rates of septic shock. Conclusion: It is inferred that COVID-19 in patients with previous CVD, mainly SAH, have a greater chance of infection due to increased expression of ACE 2 and to present manifestations of thrombosis associated with a pro-coagulant state and inflammatory manifestations associated with a pro-state. -inflammatory triggering a higher rate of hospitalization, resulting in serious complications, requiring intensive treatment, and in some cases death

EphB1 recruits c-Src and p52Shc to activate MAPK/ERK and promote chemotaxis

Eph receptors and their ligands (ephrins) play an important role in axonal guidance, topographic mapping, and angiogenesis. The signaling pathways mediating these activities are starting to emerge and are highly cell- and receptor-type specific. Here we demonstrate that activated EphB1 recruits the adaptor proteins Grb2 and p52Shc and promotes p52Shc and c-Src tyrosine phosphorylation as well as MAPK/extracellular signal–regulated kinase (ERK) activation. EphB1-mediated increase of cell migration was abrogated by the MEK inhibitor PD98059 and Src inhibitor PP2. In contrast, cell adhesion, which we previously showed to be c-jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) dependent, was unaffected by ERK1/2 and Src inhibition. Expression of dominant-negative c-Src significantly reduced EphB1-dependent ERK1/2 activation and chemotaxis. Site-directed mutagenesis experiments demonstrate that tyrosines 600 and 778 of EphB1 are required for its interaction with c-Src and p52Shc. Furthermore, phosphorylation of p52Shc by c-Src is essential for its recruitment to EphB1 signaling complexes through its phosphotyrosine binding domain. Together these findings highlight a new aspect of EphB1 signaling, whereby the concerted action of c-Src and p52Shc activates MAPK/ERK and regulates events involved in cell motility

Evidence for recombination between a sialidase (nanH) of Actinomyces naeslundii and Actinomyces oris, previously named ‘Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 1 and 2’

Actinomyces spp., predominant members of human oral biofilms, may use extracellular sialidase to promote adhesion, deglycosylate immunoglobulins and liberation of nutrients. Partial nanH gene sequences (1077 bp) from Actinomyces oris (n =74), Actinomyces naeslundii (n =30), Actinomyces viscosus (n =1) and Actinomyces johnsonii (n =2) which included the active-site region and the bacterial neuraminidase repeats (BNRs) were compared. The sequences were aligned and each species formed a distinct cluster with five isolates having intermediate positions. These five isolates (two A. oris and three A. naeslundii) exhibited interspecies recombination. The nonsynonymous/synonymous ratio was <1 for both A. oris and A. naeslundii indicating that nanH in both species is under stabilizing selective pressure; nonsynonymous mutations are not selected. However, for A. oris significant negative values in tests for neutral selection suggested the rate of mutation in A. oris was greater than in A. naeslundii but with selection against nonsynonymous mutations. This was supported by the observation that the frequency of polymorphic sites in A. oris, which were monomorphic in A. naeslundii was significantly greater than the frequency of polymorphic sites in A. naeslundii which were monomorphic in A. oris (χ2=7.011; P =0.00081). The higher proportions of A. oris in the oral biofilm might be explained by the higher mutation rate facilitating an increased ability to respond successfully to environmental stress

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study aims to analyze sports columns written by one of the canons of this kind in Brazil, Nelson Rodrigues, published between 1958 and 1966 and collected by Ruy Castro in A pátria de chuteiras.

The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the peculiarities of maxillofacial injuries caused by interpersonal violence with other etiologic factors. Medical records of 3,724 patients with maxillofacial injuries in São Paulo state (Brazil) were retrospectively analyzed. The data were submitted to statistical analysis (simple descriptive statistics and Chi-squared test) using SPSS 18.0 software. Data of 612 patients with facial injuries caused by violence were analyzed. The majority of the patients were male (81%; n = 496), with a mean age of 31.28 years (standard deviation of 13.33 years). These patients were more affected by mandibular and nose fractures, when compared with all other patients (P < 0.01), although fewer injuries were recorded in other body parts (χ(2) = 17.54; P < 0.01); Victims of interpersonal violence exhibited more injuries when the neurocranium was analyzed in isolation (χ(2) = 6.85; P < 0.01). Facial trauma due to interpersonal violence seem to be related to a higher rate of facial fractures and lacerations when compared to all patients with facial injuries. Prominent areas of the face and neurocranium were more affected by injuries. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the peculiarities of maxillofacial injuries caused by interpersonal violence with other etiologic factors.
