    Laxative activities of Mareya micrantha (Benth.) MĂŒll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) leaf aqueous extract in rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Mareya micrantha </it>(Benth.) MĂŒll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) is a shrub that is commonly used in CĂŽte d'Ivoire (West Africa) for the treatment of constipation and as an ocytocic drug. The present study was carried out to investigate the laxative activity of <it>Mareya micrantha </it>in albino's Wistar rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Rats were divided in 5 groups of 5 animals each, first group as control, second group served as standard (sodium picosulfate) while group 3, 4 and 5 were treated with leaf aqueous extract of <it>Mareya micrantha </it>at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight (b.w.), <it>per os </it>respectively. The laxative activity was determined based on the weight of the faeces matter. The effects of the leaves aqueous extract of <it>Mareya micrantha </it>and castor oil were also evaluated on intestinal transit, intestinal fluid accumulation and ions secretion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phytochemicals screening of the extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, polyphenols, sterols and polyterpenes. The aqueous extract of <it>Mareya micrantha </it>applied orally (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg; <it>p.o</it>.), produced significant laxative activity and reduced loperamide induced constipation in dose dependant manner. The effect of the extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg (<it>p.o</it>.) was similar to that of reference drug sodium picosulfate (5 mg/kg, <it>p.o</it>). The same doses of the extract (200 and 400 mg/kg, <it>p.o</it>.) produced a significant increase (p < 0.01) of intestinal transit in comparison with castor oil (2 mL) (p < 0.01). Moreover, the extract induced a significant enteropooling and excretion of Cl<sup>-</sup>, Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+ </sup>and Ca<sup>2+ </sup>in the intestinal fluid (p < 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results showed that the aqueous extract of <it>Mareya micrantha </it>has a significant laxative activity and supports its traditional use in herbal medicine.</p

    A People’s History of Leisure Studies : Old Knowledge, New Knowledge and The Philadelphia Negro as a Foundational Text

    There is a great realization that a professor teaching an introductory or philosophical foundations course in the field of leisure studies comes to, if that professor may not be from the dominant culture of most Western societies. This realization is as stark as their numerical presence in their respective departments. Why are the philosophical foundations of the field devoid of the experiences, voices, and perspectives populations of color, or even more broadly, the populations of the global majority? And, why is there an absence of historical discussions on the field’s role in perpetrating or condoning activities that hindered or constrained populations of color full access, enjoyment, and articulation of leisure? As we move forward in the field more globally, thinking and discussing the new and progressive ways that we can conceive the sociology of leisure, it is imperative that we rethink our philosophical foundations in reconciliation of the potential harm it may have caused (and may continue to harm) and the actual good it can invoke in assisting the myriad of scholars who are pushing more progressive efforts for a critical leisure paradigm (Spracklen, Lashua, Sharpe and Swain, 2017). The objectives of this manuscript are: 1) to briefly categorize the research in the field on Race and ethnicity; 2) to outline the key canonical texts of the field; 3) to consider and reconceptualize a racially and ethnically inclusive foundation for the field utilizing The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study as an example; and, 4) to identify some of the specific areas that this change and inclusion would impact or realign the field’s history

    The primary aim of this paper is to identify and theoretically validate the relationships between core game design elements and mechanics, user motivation and engagement and consequently learning. Additionally, it tries to highlight the moderating role of player personality traits on learning outcomes and acceptance and suggest ways to incorporate them in the game design process. To that end, it outlines the role of narrative, aesthetics and core game mechanics in facilitating higher learning outcomes through intrinsic motivation and engagement. At the same time, it discusses how player goal orientation, openness to experience, conscientiousness, sensation seeking and need for cognition influence the translation of the gameplay experience into valuable learning outcomes and user acceptance of the technology

    Application of hybrid frequency domain substructuring for modelling an automotive engine suspension

    A practical application of hybrid FRF-coupling (Frequency Response Function) in the development of a passenger car is presented. First, a short review is given about FRF-coupling in general. Next, some problems are discussed which may be encountered when both analytical and experimental FRF-data is used in FRF-coupling. This is also known as hybrid modelling. The main part of this paper presents a successful application of hybrid FRF-coupling to analyze and solve an interior noise problem of a passenger car. Both analytical and experimental FRFs were used to create a hybrid dynamic model of a complete passenger car. The engine and its suspension system were modelled using finite elements, while the remainder of the car was modelled by experimentaly derived FRFs. This hybrid model was then used to compute the response of the vehicle due to the engine excitation. Measured noise transfer function were used next to compute the interior sound pressure level using forced response results of the hybrid car model. Subsequently, the hybrid model was used to analyze the problem, and to predict the effects of an alternative design of the engine suspension on interior noise. Numerical results indicated that the alternative design would have a significant positive effect on noise. This was confirmed by verification measurements on a car

    Soluble FcÎłRIIIaMφ Levels in Plasma Correlate with Carotid Maximum Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) in Subjects Undergoing an Annual Medical Checkup

    Macrophages play a major role in the development of vascular lesions in atherogenesis. The cells express FcÎłRIIIa (CD16) identical to that in NK cells, but with a cell type-specific glycosylation, and these soluble forms (sFcÎłRIIIa) are present in plasma. We measured sFcÎłRIIIaMφ derived from macrophages in plasma from subjects undergoing an annual medical checkup. The levels of sFcÎłRIIIaMφ increased with age, and correlated positively with body mass index, blood pressure, LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio, triglycerides, hemoglobin A1c, and creatinine, but negatively with HDL-cholesterol levels. The sFcÎłRIIIaMφ levels were related to the number of risk factors for atherosclerosis: such as aging, current smoking, diabetes, hypertension, hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia, hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, and family history of atherosclerotic diseases. In addition, the sFcÎłRIIIaMφ levels were correlated with carotid maximum intima-media thickness (IMT). These findings indicate the macrophages are activated during the incipient stage of atherosclerosis, and suggest sFcÎłRIIIaMφ may be used as a predictive marker for atherosclerosis
