    Mapping the sensitivity of split ring resonators using a localized analyte

    Split ring resonator (SRR) based metamaterials have frequently been demonstrated for use as optical sensors of organic materials. This is made possible by matching the wavelength of the SRR plasmonic resonance with a molecular resonance of a specific analyte, which is usually placed on top of the metal structure. However, systematic studies of SRRs that identify the regions that exhibit a high electric field strength are commonly performed using simulations. In this paper we demonstrate that areas of high electric field strength, termed “hot-spots,” can be found by localizing a small quantity of organic analyte at various positions on or near the structure. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the SRR to the localized analyte can be quantified to determine, experimentally, suitable regions for optical sensing

    A method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies

    Early pregnancy loss occurs in 6–10% of equine pregnancies making it the main cause of reproductive wastage. Despite this, reasons for the losses are known in only 16% of cases. Lack of viable conceptus material has inhibited investigations of many potential genetic and pathological causes. We present a method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies. Trophoblast cells from 18/30 (60%) failed equine pregnancies of gestational ages 14–65 days were successfully cultured in three different media, with the greatest growth achieved for cells cultured in AmnioChrome™ Plus. Genomic DNA of a suitable quality for molecular assays was also isolated from 29/30 of these cases. This method will enable future investigations determining pathologies causing EPL

    High-intensity strength training in an older population: a preliminary study

    BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease worldwide, and it occurs mainly later in life. Many factors are associated with osteoarthritis development, including decline in muscle strength. Muscle strengthening exercises have been recognized as important approaches to osteoarthritis conservative management of the knee; however, issues related to its applicability in terms of intensity are still elusive. OBJECTIVE: Studies using high-intensity exercises have shown inconsistent results, thus the purpose of this study was to analyze the response to high-intensity strength training for muscle strength and physical function in an older healthy population, as well as their attitudes towards the strength training. METHODS: This study employed a within-subject, repeated measure, in an experimental design to assess the response to strength training for physical mobility and strength in a cohort of 10 healthy older subjects at baseline and after six weeks of intervention. RESULTS: The statistical analysis demonstrated that knee extensor isokinetic peak torque significantly improved (p < 0.05) after intervention, whereas knee flexors only showed a trend for improvement (p = 0.066). Repetition maximum tests had significant improvements for all exercises performed. There was no change in physical mobility after intervention (p = 0.163). CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrate that high-intensity strength training was safe and has potential value in healthy older people

    Comparison of medical and surgical treatment for acute cervical compressive hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion in dogs

    Although successful outcomes have been reported after medical and surgical treatment for dogs with cervical hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion (HNPE), it is unknown which treatment option is preferred. Thirty-four dogs treated medically (n=18) or surgically (n=16) for cervical HNPE were retrospectively identified. Signalment, clinical presentation and imaging findings were compared between medically and surgically treated dogs. Medical management consisted of restricted exercise in combination with physiotherapy. Surgical treatment consisted of a ventral slot procedure. Short-term follow-up information was retrieved from re-examination visits. Long-term outcome was obtained via telephone interviews. More dogs in the surgical group demonstrated cervical hyperaesthesia on initial clinical presentation (P=0.045), otherwise there was no significant difference in signalment, clinical presentation or imaging findings between both groups. Two dogs in the medically managed group underwent surgical decompression due to an unsatisfactory response to medical management. All cases for which long-term information was available (n=30) were neurologically normal at the time of data collection. There were no significant differences for any of the short-term or long-term outcome variables between both treatment groups. This study demonstrated successful outcomes after medical or surgical treatment and suggests that both treatment modalities can be considered for dogs with cervical HNPE

    Convergent evolution of pregnancy-specific glycoproteins in human and horse

    Pregnancy-specific glycoproteins (PSGs) are members of the carcinoembryonic antigen cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM) family that are secreted by trophoblast cells. PSGs may modulate immune, angiogenic and platelet responses during pregnancy. Until now, PSGs are only found in species that have a highly invasive (hemochorial) placentation including humans, mice and rats. Surprisingly, analyzing the CEACAM gene family of the horse, which has a non-invasive epitheliochorial placenta, with the exception of the transient endometrial cups, we identified equine CEACAM family members that seem to be related to PSGs of rodents and primates. We identified seven genes that encode secreted PSG-like CEACAMs. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that they evolved independently from an equine CEACAM1-like ancestor rather than from a common PSG-like ancestor with rodents and primates. Significantly, expression of PSG-like genes (CEACAM44, CEACAM48, CEACAM49 and CEACAM55) was found in non-invasive as well as invasive trophoblast cells such as purified chorionic girdle cells and endometrial cup cells. Chorionic girdle cells are highly invasive trophoblast cells that invade the endometrium of the mare where they form endometrial cups and are in close contact with maternal immune cells. Therefore, the microenvironment of invasive equine trophoblast cells has striking similarities to the microenvironment of trophoblast cells in hemochorial placentas, suggesting that equine PSG-like CEACAMs and rodent and primate PSGs have undergone convergent evolution. This is supported by our finding that equine PSG-like CEACAM49 exhibits similar activity to certain rodent and human PSGs in a functional assay of platelet–fibrinogen binding. Our results have implications for understanding the evolution of PSGs and their functions in maternal–fetal interactions

    Enabling Group-Based Learning in Teacher Education: A Case Study of Student Experience

    “Teacher education ill prepares pre-service teachers for the classroom.” Research conducted in a teacher education program at Edith Cowan University (ECU) responded to this criticism. This longitudinal case study selected group work (i.e., group-based learning) to investigate the quality of its teacher education program. Phase one explored teacher educators\u27 perceptions of group-based learning. Phase two explored preservice teachers\u27 perceptions and experience of group-based learning. This phase used student ‘voice’ (i.e., through focus groups, confirmed field notes, summary sheets) to convey their ideas and experiences when studying in a group and/or implementing group-based learning in the classroom. This paper discusses phase two findings which show the importance of consistency and coherence in understanding group-based learning principles and practices, and the broad ‘conditions’ and ‘actions’ that enable meaningful learning. The research has enabled ECU teacher educators to enhance the quality of the teacher education program

    General Framework for phase synchronization through localized sets

    We present an approach which enables to identify phase synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators without having to explicitly measure the phase. We show that if one defines a typical event in one oscillator and then observes another one whenever this event occurs, these observations give rise to a localized set. Our result provides a general and easy way to identify PS, which can also be used to oscillators that possess multiple time scales. We illustrate our approach in networks of chemically coupled neurons. We show that clusters of phase synchronous neurons may emerge before the onset of phase synchronization in the whole network, producing a suitable environment for information exchanging. Furthermore, we show the relation between the localized sets and the amount of information that coupled chaotic oscillator can exchange

    Orexin in the chicken hypothalamus: immunocytochemical localisation and comparison of mRNA concentrations during the day and night, and after chronic food restriction

    In mammals Orexin-A and -B are neuropeptides involved in the hypothalamic regulation of diverse physiological functions including food intake and the sleep-wake cycle. This generalisation was investigated in meat-(broiler) and layer-type juvenile domestic chickens by immunocytochemical localisation of orexin A/B in the hypothalamus, and by measurements of hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA which encodes for orexin A/B after chronic food restriction, and during the sleep-wake cycle. Orexin immunoreactive fibres were observed throughout the hypothalamus with cell bodies in and around the paraventricular nucleus. No differences were observed in the pattern of immunoreactivity using anti- human orexin-A, or -B antisera. The amount of hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA in food -restricted broilers was higher than in broilers fed ad libitum, but the same as in layer- type hens fed ad libitum. Hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA was increased (Po0.01) in 12-week-old broilers fed 25% of their ad libitum intake between 6–12 weeks of age. No difference in hypothalamic hypocretin mRNA was seen in 12-week-old layer- type hens when they were awake (1–2 h after lights on) or sleeping (1–2 h after lights off). It is concluded that in the chicken, we could not find evidence that hypothalamic orexin plays a role in the sleep-wake cycle and it may be involved in aspects of energy balance
