ABSTRACT. Marcel Breuer, Hungarian architect and famed to furniture's designer of the Bauhaus emigrated to America in 1937, invited by Gropius as a professor at Harvard. Breuer and Gropius, there begin a new stage based on the experimentation of the house as a revision to the postulates of modern architecture: the house as a dwell machine proposed by Le Corbusier from old Europe; versus the humanization of the machine through the effect of material on the structure and form extended and in contact with the territory, proposed by Frank LI. Wright from the new America. His experiments on the house-cottage approached traditional methods of the American construction methods to a new vision, abstract and pure, where ways of life, and basic, practical and functional requirements became the connection to "Art of Building" trough the material and its placing. The search for a clear answer of dwelling that satisfied conflicting objectives and human needs, led to the architecture of abstraction to reconcile man with nature, endow it with life and art, an architecture and a landscape that became the modern ideals of American cottage

Tribological behaviour of the low and high viscosity peek at various testing scales

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has become most attractive as a sliding bearing material in industrial applications, due to its excellent thermal stability, good friction and wear resistance. These properties promote the material to be used in so called high performance tribological applications. However, fundamental mechanisms governing friction and wear are not yet fully understood and neither is the influence of composition parameters. An important parameter is PEEK’s viscosity during injection moulding which is heated up to semi-solid state, between its glass transition and melting temperature. It is not known to what extent the injection viscosity, related to the applied temperature profile, affects subsequent tribological features. This paper studies the friction and wear performance of low and high viscosity PEEK under dry reciprocating sliding contact. The tests were performed with small and large scale specimens under pin-on-plate and flat-on-flat configuration, respectively; to determine the transitions in tribological behaviour at different scales and to identify the applications limits. Tests were carried out at controlled atmosphere with 25 °C and a relative humidity of 50%. Parameters such as contact pressures and sliding speed were limited at 10 MPa and 20 mm/s, respectively; post mortem analyses were carried out by means of 2-D surface topography and optical microscopy. The results show that PEEK injected at high viscosity exhibits a tribological performance with a relatively high coefficient of friction and high wear rate compare to PEEK injected at low viscosity

3D high definition video coding on a GPU-based heterogeneous system

H.264/MVC is a standard for supporting the sensation of 3D, based on coding from 2 (stereo) to N views. H.264/MVC adopts many coding options inherited from single view H.264/AVC, and thus its complexity is even higher, mainly because the number of processing views is higher. In this manuscript, we aim at an efficient parallelization of the most computationally intensive video encoding module for stereo sequences. In particular, inter prediction and its collaborative execution on a heterogeneous platform. The proposal is based on an efficient dynamic load balancing algorithm and on breaking encoding dependencies. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed algorithm's ability to reduce the encoding time for different stereo high definition sequences. Speed-up values of up to 90× were obtained when compared with the reference encoder on the same platform. Moreover, the proposed algorithm also provides a more energy-efficient approach and hence requires less energy than the sequential reference algorith

The objective of the present research was to characterize the mathematical reasoning skills in children with ADHD between 7 and 9 years old. The study begins with the conception of children with special needs and an anthropological research is carried out in perspectives of the actor on mathematical reasoning skills and interviews of their three teachers about their difficulties, alterations and disorders. The research method is an ethnographic fieldwork.

Simple Method for Perfect Reconstruction QMF Filter Design

The purpose of this work is the design of FIR QMF (Quadrature Mirror Filters) filters of perfect reconstruction and odd number of coefficients (even order). By design, these filters will have linear phase and integer delay. These filter pairs have many applications in wavelet transforms and other multi-frequency decompositions. Perfect reconstruction filters have been studied from long time ago but we still found publications about them.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

Energy reserves mobilization: Strategies of three decapod species

In food deprivation assays, several different responses have been observed in crustaceans. However, studying energy reserves utilization among more than one species during the same starvation period has not yet been performed, particularly to discern whether the responses are due to intrinsic and/or environmental factors. We hypothesize that decapod species with similar feeding habits have the same strategies in the use of energetic reserves during starvation, even though they inhabit different environments. The aim of this study was to compare the energy reserves mobilization of three decapods species (Cherax quadricarinatus, Palaemon argentinus and Munida gregaria) with similar feeding habits, exposed to similar food deprivation conditions. The crayfish, shrimp and squat-lobster were experimentally kept at continuous feeding or continuous starvation throughout 15 days. Every 3rd day, the midgut gland index (MGI), and the glycogen, lipid and protein contents were measured in the midgut gland (MG) and pleon muscle. Palaemon argentinus mobilized more reserves during starvation, followed by C. quadricarinatus, and the last M. gregaria. The starved shrimps presented low MGI, whereas MG showed a reduction in glycogen (from day 6 to 15), lipid (from day 3 to 15), and protein levels (at day 9 and 15) while in their muscle, lipid reserves decreased at days 3 and 6. In C. quadricarinatus, the most affected parameters in the MG were MGI, glycogen (from day 6 to 15), and lipids (at day 12 and 15). In the MG of M. gregaria only the glycogen was reduced during fasting from 3 to 15 days. Even though the three studied species have similar feeding habitats, we found that their energetic profile utilization is different and it could be explained by the habitat, life span, temperature, organ/tissue, and metabolism of the species. Our results may be useful to understand the several different responses of crustaceans during starvation.Fil: Sacristán, Hernán Javier. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
