    Intertwining Relations for the Deformed D1D5 CFT

    The Higgs branch of the D1D5 system flows in the infrared to a two-dimensional N=(4,4) SCFT. This system is believed to have an "orbifold point" in its moduli space where the SCFT is a free sigma model with target space the symmetric product of copies of four-tori; however, at the orbifold point gravity is strongly coupled and to reach the supergravity point one needs to turn on the four exactly marginal deformations corresponding to the blow-up modes of the orbifold SCFT. Recently, technology has been developed for studying these deformations and perturbing the D1D5 CFT off its orbifold point. We present a new method for computing the general effect of a single application of the deformation operators. The method takes the form of intertwining relations that map operators in the untwisted sector before application of the deformation operator to operators in the 2-twisted sector after the application of the deformation operator. This method is computationally more direct, and may be of theoretical interest. This line of inquiry should ultimately have relevance for black hole physics.Comment: latex, 23 pages, 3 figure

    Are owl pellets good estimators of prey abundance?

    Some ecologists have been skeptics about the use of owl pellets to estimate small mammal's fauna. This is due to the assumptions required by this method: (a) that owls hunt at random, and (b) that pellets represent a random sample from the environment. We performed statistical analysis to test these assumptions and to assess the effectiveness of Barn owl pellets as a useful estimator of field abundances of its preys. We used samples collected in the arid Extra-Andean Patagonia along an altitudinal environmental gradient from lower Monte ecoregion to upper Patagonian steppe ecoregion, with a mid-elevation ecotone. To test if owls hunt at random, we estimated expected pellet frequency by creating a distribution of random pellets, which we compared with data using a simulated chi-square. To test if pellets represent a random sample from the environment, differences between ecoregions were evaluated by PERMANOVAs with Bray–Curtis dissimilarities. We did not find evidence that owls foraged non-randomly. Therefore, we can assume that the proportions of the small mammal's species in the diet are representative of the proportions of the species in their communities. Only Monte is different from other ecoregions. The ecotone samples are grouped with those of Patagonian steppes. There are no real differences between localities in the small mammal's abundances in each of these ecoregions and/or Barn owl pellets cannot detect patterns at a smaller spatial scale.     Bounding effective parameters in the chiral Lagrangian for excited heavy mesons

    We use recent experimental data on charmed mesons to constrain three coupling constants in the effective lagrangian describing the interactions of excited heavy-light mesons with light pseudoscalar mesons at order mQ1m_Q^{-1}.     Stability of coherent pattern formation through invasion in the FitzHugh-Nagumo system

    We establish sharp nonlinear stability results for fronts that describe the creation of a periodic pattern through the invasion of an unstable state. The fronts we consider are critical, in the sense that they are expected to mediate pattern selection from compactly supported or steep initial data. We focus on pulled fronts, that is, on fronts whose propagation speed is determined by the linearization about the unstable state in the leading edge, only. We present our analysis in the specific setting of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system, where pattern-forming uniformly translating fronts have recently been constructed rigorously, but our methods can be used to establish nonlinear stability of pulled pattern-forming fronts in general reaction-diffusion systems. This is the first stability result of critical pattern-selecting fronts and provides a rigorous foundation for heuristic, universal wave number selection laws in growth processes based on a marginal stability conjecture. The main technical challenge is to describe the interaction between two separate modes of marginal stability, one associated with the spreading process in the leading edge, and one associated with the pattern in the wake. We develop tools based on far-field/core decompositions to characterize, and eventually control, the interaction between these two different types of diffusive modes. Linear decay rates are insufficient to close a nonlinear stability argument and we therefore need a sharper description of the relaxation in the wake of the front using a phase modulation ansatz. We control regularity in the resulting quasilinear equation for the modulated perturbation using nonlinear damping estimates.Comment: 83 pages, 7 figure

    Hyperspherical Description of the Degenerate Fermi Gas: S-wave Interactions

    We present a unique theoretical description of the physics of the spherically trapped NN-atom degenerate Fermi gas (DFG) at zero temperature based on an ordinary Schr\"{o}dinger equation with a microscopic, two body interaction potential. With a careful choice of coordinates and a variational wavefunction, the many body Schr\"{o}dinger equation can be accurately described by a \emph{linear}, one dimensional effective Schr\"{o}dinger equation in a single collective coordinate, the rms radius of the gas. Comparisons of the energy, rms radius and peak density of ground state energy are made to those predicted by Hartree-Fock (HF). Also the lowest radial excitation frequency (the breathing mode frequency) agrees with a sum rule calculation, but deviates from a HF prediction

    Signatures of Relativistic Helical Motion in the Rotation Measures of AGN Jets

    Polarization has proved an invaluable tool for probing magnetic fields in relativistic jets. Maps of the intrinsic polarization vectors have provided the best evidence to date for uniform, toroidally dominated magnetic fields within jets. More recently, maps of the rotation measure (RM) in jets have for the first time probed the field geometry of the cool, moderately relativistic surrounding material. In most cases, clear signatures of toroidal magnetic field are detected, corresponding to gradients in RM profiles transverse to the jet. However, in many objects these profiles also display marked asymmetries which are difficult to explain in simple helical jet models. Furthermore, in some cases the RM profiles are strongly frequency and/or time dependent. Here we show that these features may be naturally accounted for by including relativistic helical motion in the jet model. In particular, we are able to reproduce bent RM profiles observed in a variety of jets, frequency dependent RM profile morphologies and even the time dependence of the RM profiles of knots in 3C 273. Finally, we predict that some sources may show reversals in their RM profiles at sufficiently high frequencies, depending upon the the ratio of the components of jet sheath velocity transverse and parallel to the jet. Thus, multi-frequency RM maps promise a novel way in which to probe the velocity structure of relativistic outflows.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

    Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Drugs and Signals of Dementia and Parkinson-Like Events: Analysis of the VigiBase Database of Spontaneous Reports

    Introduction: Since vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) regulates several aspects of the central nervous system, particularly in dopaminergic neurons, VEGF inhibitors may be linked to Parkinson-like events and dementia, or variants of these diseases. Two recent case reports have found a potential link between intravitreal anti-VEGF use and Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia. Aim: To evaluate disproportionality in a large spontaneous reporting database concerning intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs and PD or dementia, and related conditions. Methods: Using VigiBase, individual case safety reports (ICSRs) attributed to intravitreal ranibizumab, aflibercept, pegaptanib, and bevacizumab were identified from 2010 to 2016. Within Standardised Narrow Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA®) Queries (SMQs) for “Parkinson-like events” and “Dementia,” suspected events were identified using preferred terms (PTs). The Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR) was estimated with the lower 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all drug-event pairs with ≥3 suspected events. The vigiGrade completeness score was reported for the ICSRs. The analyses were repeated, including only persons aged 65 and over. Results: Out of 18.9 million ICSRs, 7,945 (0.004%) concerned intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs. Of these, 27 (0.34%) were identified concerning the SMQs “Dementia” (N = 17, 62.96%) and “Parkinson-like events” (N = 10, 37.94%) in persons of all ages. Among persons age 65 and over, 4,758 (59.88% of relevant ICSRs) ICSRs were identified for anti-VEGF drugs. When restricting disproportionality analysis to persons aged 65 and over, no disproportionality was seen for any of the drug-event pairs at the level of SMQ. However, on analysing disproportionality by PT, a potential signal emerged for intravitreal ranibizumab and Parkinson’s disease [N = 6 ICSRs; PRR: 3.05 (95% CI: 1.36-6.81)]. In general, the vigiGrade completeness score was low for all the ICSRs of interest, as no ICSR had a score >0.8. Conclusion: Present findings suggest a potential signal for Parkinson’s disease related to intravitreal ranibizumab. This is supported by several biologically plausible mechanisms but requires confirmation through pharmacoepidemiological studies, especially because of the low number of cases
