A coupled analysis of sloshing in floating structures by integrating moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method with a time domain multibody dynamic analysis software

Sloshing effects inside partially filled tanks on LNG carriers and FPSOs motions cannot be ignored. It is necessary to analyze the floating structures motion with the sloshing behavior simultaneously to obtain more accurate stability predictions because the phenomenon may affect the safety and the operability of the vessels in seaways and during loading and offloading process. In the present study, in order to model the coupled effects of platforms motion in waves and the liquid sloshing inside its tank, a hybrid timedomain simulation approach based on the integration of two simulators is proposed. The Numerical Offshore Tank (TPN) simulator, which is a time domain multibody dynamic analysis software, is used for the simulation of open domain hydrodynamic forces. It is able to perform calculations of coupled floating structures motion with the dynamic of mooring and connection lines and risers considering environmental condition such as wave, current and wind. In the other hand, due to the highly nonlinear aspect of the sloshing phenomenon, the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method, which demands huge computing resources and it is more suitable to confined domain problems, is used to simulate the sloshing motion and to calculate the loads on the tank walls. The effects due to sloshing is then feed-backed to the TPN simulator as additional force and moment to solve the motion equation of the floating structure. The calculation can be distributed in a PCs cluster and each sloshing tank is solved in a different node. In this way, it allows the calculation of many tanks without increasing the computational time. Simulations were carried out with and without considering the coupled sloshing motions, and the results were compared to assess the effects of the liquid cargo sloshing on the motion of the floating structure

This piece of research is a result of finding the manuscript of the translation of the Iliad, by Manuel Odorico Mendes (1799-1964), identified in a field work at the Archives of the Imperial Museum, in Petrópolis, RJ, Brazil. The foreword attached to the translation remained unidentified for over 100 years. Once transcribed and analyzed, it reveals new information. Based on the History of Translation and Cultural Studies, the goal of this dissertation is to discuss how Odorico Mendes dealt with the translation activity in the middle of the nineteenth century especially in its relationship with the translation of the Iliad. Important names, like D. Pedro II, Caetano Lopes de Moura, Anne Dacier and Alexander Pope are mentioned in these discussions. Further reflections on this study show the relevance of the work of Odorico Mendes in the history of the study of translation, literary and cultural

    Weak-Interacting Holographic QCD

We propose a simple prescription for including low-energy weak-interactions into the framework of holographic QCD, based on the standard AdS/CFT dictionary of double-trace deformations. As our proposal enables us to calculate various electro-weak observables involving strongly coupled QCD, it opens a new perspective on phenomenological applications of holographic QCD. We illustrate efficiency and usefulness of our method by performing a few exemplar calculations; neutron beta decay, charged pion weak decay, and meson-nucleon parity non-conserving (PNC) couplings. The idea is general enough to be implemented in both Sakai-Sugimoto as well as Hard/Soft Wall models.Comment: 18 pages, v3: submitted to PL

This paper aims to study a brick with inscriptions in cuneiform characters in  which the sentences are almost complete. Typological studies in agreement with historical records suggest that the tablet was manufactured in the 6th century  BCE during the dynasty of Nebuchadnezzar II, Great King of Babylon. The  sample was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), thermoluminescence (TL), and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) techniques. The results showed that the brick is 2350 years old (± 40) and its firing temperature was lower than 400 °C

Multi-object spectroscopy of low-redshift EIS clusters IV. Reliability of matched-filter results at z~0.3-0.4

abridged) In this paper we present new redshifts for 747 galaxies in 23 ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) cluster fields. We use the "gap"-technique to search for significant overdensities in redshift space for identifying groups/clusters of galaxies. In this way we spectroscopically confirm systems in 10 of the 23 cluster candidate fields with a matched-filter estimated redshift z_MF=0.3-0.4 and with spectroscopic redshifts in the range from z=0.158 to z=0.534. We find that the systems identified in the present paper span a broad range of one-dimensional velocity dispersion (175-497 km/s) and richness (12L*<=L<=65L*). Both undersampling and contamination by substructures contribute to the uncertainty of these measurements. From the analysis of the colours of the galaxy populations we find that ~60% of the spectroscopically confirmed systems have a "significant" red sequence with a colour matching passive stellar evolution models. With this paper we complete our spectroscopic survey of the fields of 58 EIS cluster candidates with estimated redshifts z<=0.4. We have measured a total of 1954 galaxy redshifts in the range z=0.0065 to z=0.6706. Of the 58 systems we confirm 42 (~75%) with redshifts between z=0.095 and z=0.534.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages, 11 figure

An Experimental Field Study of Delayed Density Dependence in Natural Populations of Aedes albopictus

    Get PDF
Aedes albopictus, a species known to transmit dengue and chikungunya viruses, is primarily a container-inhabiting mosquito. The potential for pathogen transmission by Ae. albopictus has increased our need to understand its ecology and population dynamics. Two parameters that we know little about are the impact of direct density-dependence and delayed density-dependence in the larval stage. The present study uses a manipulative experimental design, under field conditions, to understand the impact of delayed density dependence in a natural population of Ae. albopictus in Raleigh, North Carolina. Twenty liter buckets, divided in half prior to experimentation, placed in the field accumulated rainwater and detritus, providing oviposition and larval production sites for natural populations of Ae. albopictus. Two treatments, a larvae present and larvae absent treatment, were produced in each bucket. After five weeks all larvae were removed from both treatments and the buckets were covered with fine mesh cloth. Equal numbers of first instars were added to both treatments in every bucket. Pupae were collected daily and adults were frozen as they emerged. We found a significant impact of delayed density-dependence on larval survival, development time and adult body size in containers with high larval densities. Our results indicate that delayed density-dependence will have negative impacts on the mosquito population when larval densities are high enough to deplete accessible nutrients faster than the rate of natural food accumulation
