Chiral corrections to kaon-nucleon scattering lengths
We calculate the threshold T-matrices of kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon
scattering to one loop order in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
To that order the complex-valued isospin-1 threshold T-matrix can be
successfully predicted from the isospin-0 and 1 threshold T-matrices. As
expected perturbation theory fails to explain the isospin-0 threshold
T-matrix which is completely dominated by the nearby subthreshold
-resonance. Cancelations of large terms of second and third
chiral order are observed as they seem to be typical for SU(3) baryon chiral
perturbation theory calculations. We also give the kaon and eta loop
corrections to the scattering lengths and we investigate
scattering to one-loop order. The second order s-wave low-energy constants are
all of natural size and do not exceed 1 GeV in magnitude.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, published in Phys. Rev. C64, 045204 (2001),

Chiral dynamics of p-wave in K^- p and coupled states
We perform an evaluation of the p-wave amplitudes of meson-baryon scattering
in the strangeness S=-1 sector starting from the lowest order chiral
Lagrangians and introducing explicitly the Sigma^* field with couplings to the
meson-baryon states obtained using SU(6) symmetry. The N/D method of
unitarization is used, equivalent, in practice, to the use of the
Bethe-Salpeter equation with a cut-off. The procedure leaves no freedom for the
p-waves once the s-waves are fixed and thus one obtains genuine predictions for
the p-wave scattering amplitudes, which are in good agreement with experimental
results for differential cross sections, as well as for the width and partial
decay widths of the Sigma^*(1385).Comment: LaTeX, 18 pages, 6 figure
Chiral unitary approach to S-wave meson baryon scattering in the strangeness S=0 sector
We study the S-wave interaction of mesons with baryons in the strangeness S=0
sector in a coupled channel unitary approach. The basic dynamics is drawn from
the lowest order meson baryon chiral Lagrangians. Small modifications inspired
by models with explicit vector meson exchange in the t-channel are also
considered. In addition the pi pi N channel is included and shown to have an
important repercussion in the results, particularly in the isospin 3/2 sector.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 21 figure
CP Violation in Hyperon Nonleptonic Decays within the Standard Model
We calculate the CP-violating asymmetries A(Lambda_-^0) and A(Xi_-^-) in
nonleptonic hyperon decay within the Standard Model using the framework of
heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (chiPT). We identify those terms that
correspond to previous calculations and discover several errors in the existing
literature. We present a new result for the lowest-order (in chiPT)
contribution of the penguin operator to these asymmetries, as well as an
estimate for the uncertainty of our result that is based on the calculation of

Grain Surface Models and Data for Astrochemistry
AbstractThe cross-disciplinary field of astrochemistry exists to understand the formation, destruction, and survival of molecules in astrophysical environments. Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. A broad consensus has been reached in the astrochemistry community on how to suitably treat gas-phase processes in models, and also on how to present the necessary reaction data in databases; however, no such consensus has yet been reached for grain-surface processes. A team of ∼25 experts covering observational, laboratory and theoretical (astro)chemistry met in summer of 2014 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden with the aim to provide solutions for this problem and to review the current state-of-the-art of grain surface models, both in terms of technical implementation into models as well as the most up-to-date information available from experiments and chemical computations. This review builds on the results of this workshop and gives an outlook for future directions

Memetic Phase Retrieval and HPC for the Imaging of Matter at Atomic Resolution
Memetic Algorithms represent one of the most promising implementation of Evolutionary Algorithms. Their strength resides in the ability to exploit stochastic and deterministic optimization methods at the same time. A Memetic Algorithm has been applied to the phase retrieval problem in the field of Coherent Diffraction Imaging, called Memetic Phase Retrieval; it represents a significant improvement in the imaging of matter via coherent diffraction experiments. Memetic Phase Retrieval requires the latest High Performance Computing resources, due to the high dimensionality of the problem and the involvement of the Fourier Transform: an efficient parallel implementation, able to fully exploit multi-core and multi-node hardware, is needed. The implementation of Memetic Phase Retrieval, which exploits the hybrid OpenMP/MPI parallel programming paradigm, along with MPI Remote Memory Access communications, is presented. Its scaling performances on the recent Intel's Knights Landing hardware are shown
The effects of storage and hop extract on aroma and flavour compounds in Balkan-style sausages packed under a CO2-containing anaerobic atmosphere
9 páginas, 3 tablas, 23 figuras.Changes in the levels of pH, lactic acid, acetic acid, headspace volatile compounds, and spoilage odour intensity during a 35 day refrigerated storage period in two sets of a Balkan-style fresh sausage, a control sausage (CON) and a sausage containing an aqueous hop extract (HOP), packaged under a 20% CO2 and 80% N2 atmosphere were evaluated. Storage resulted in progressive sausage acidification and increased the levels of acetic acid, 1-methylbutanol, ethyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-ethylhexanol; all of which are associated with anaerobic microbial metabolism under sugar restricted conditions. Storage decreased the levels of hexanal, heptanal, pentanol, and garlic-derived organosulfur compounds. Hop extract showed oxygen scavenging abilities, and decreased the levels of the volatile compounds derived from lipid auto-oxidation while contributing to the presence of specific terpene compounds. The use of hop extract did not improve the shelf life of sausages packed under anaerobic atmosphere. The spoilage odour appeared in both types of sausages on the 14th day, and it was considered strong from day 21 onwards.This work was supported by Consejería de Educación, Junta de Castilla y León (CSI042 P17).
