    Cadmium-induced oxidative damage and protective action of fractioned red beet (Beta vulgaris) root juice in chickens

    ArticleCadmium (Cd) is one of the most dangerous environmental bioaccumulative pollutants that affects many organs in humans and animals. Present investigation was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of fractioned red beetroot juice on Cd - induced oxidative stress in chickens. The named red beetroot juice fraction (BJF) was received by juice ultrafiltration. Per oral administration of BJF for 10 days followed by dietar y Cd exposure (50 mg kg - 1 of diet) was evaluated in the in vivo experiments in chickens. The prominent increase of Cd concentration in blood plasma, liver and kidney provoked the rise of oxidative processes activity in organs. BJF treatment attenuated the Cd - induced oxidative stress. The changes of oxidative stress markers - the reduction of hepatic and kidney malondialdehyde amount, the increase of glutathionperoxidase level in liver and blood catalase activity indicated the possible antioxidative influenc e of BJF. Chickens exposed to Cd showed no evidence of clinical toxicity, but exhibited some features of adverse action of this heavy metal. The increase of uric acid concentration in blood serum is associated with protein catabolic processes intensified b y Cd affect. Suppressive effect of Cd on the immune response in chickens manifested in alteration of cell and humoral immunity parameters. The data of the most investigated oxidative stress markers, biochemical and immunological indices in Cd - exposed chick ens were almost back to the values, when received BJF per os during 10 days. Administration of fractioned red beetroot juice to Cd - treated chickens prevented the oxidative impact of this heavy metal and provided immunomodulating effect

    Scaling characteristics of ULF geomagnetic fields at the Guam seismoactive area and their dynamics in relation to the earthquake

    International audienceThe long-term evolution of scaling (fractal) characteristics of the ULF geomagnetic fields in the seismoactive region of the Guam Island is studied in relation to the strong (Ms = 8.0) nearby earthquake of 8 August 1993. The selected period covers 10 months before and 10 months after the earthquake. The FFT procedure, Burlaga-Klein approach and Higuchi method, have been applied to calculate the scaling exponents and fractal dimensions of the ULF time series. It is found that the spectrum of ULF emissions exhibits, on average, a power law behaviour S(f ) ? f -b , which is a fingerprint of the typical fractal (self-affine) time series. The spectrum slope b fluctuates quasi-periodically during the course of time in a range of b = 2.5?0.7, which corresponds to the fractional Brownian motion with both persistent and antipersistent behaviour. An tendency is also found for the spectrum slope to decrease gradually when approaching the earthquake date. Such a tendency manifests itself at all local times, showing a gradual evolution of the structure of the ULF noise to a typical flicker noise structure in proximity to the large earthquake event. We suggest considering such a peculiarity as an earthquake precursory signature. One more effect related to the earthquake is revealed: the longest quasi-period, which is 27 days, disappeared from the variations of the ULF emission spectrum slope during the earthquake, and it reappeared three months after the event. Physical interpretation of the peculiarities revealed has been done on the basis of the SOC (self-organized criticality) concept

    Shell-model description of monopole shift in neutron-rich Cu

    Variations in the nuclear mean-field, in neutron-rich nuclei, are investigated within the framework of the nuclear shell model. The change is identified to originate mainly from the monopole part of the effective two-body proton-neutron interaction. Applications for the low-lying states in odd-AA Cu nuclei are presented. We compare the results using both schematic and realistic forces. We also compare the monopole shifts with the results obtained from large-scale shell-model calculations, using the same realistic interaction, in order to study two-body correlations beyond the proton mean-field variations.Comment: Phys.     PLASMON SOLITONS, KINKS AND FARADAY WAVES IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL LATTICE OF METAL NANOPARTICLES

    We consider nonlinear discrete modes in a two-dimensional lattice of metallic nanoparticles driven by optical radiation at a frequency close to the frequency of the surface plasmon resonance of an individual nanoparticle. We suppose that the particles are small enough and the interparticle distance is large enough to treat nanoparticle within point-dipole approximation. We also assume that nanoparticles are made of silver and possess an intrinsic nonlinear Kerr-type response. Since each particle acts as a resonantly excited oscillator with slow (in comparison with the light period) inertial response, we employ a slowly varying amplitude approach to describe dynamical behavior of particle polarizations. Following a standard linear stability analysis, we obtain areas of bistability and modulation instability for the homogeneous stationary solution of the corresponding dynamical system in the plane ‘intensity-frequency’. Based on these data, we present and analyze examples of generation of plasmonic Faraday waves, stable two-dimensional solitons, oscillons, and kinks (switching waves), which separate two different homogeneous states of particle polarizations. We also discuss realistic duration of the laser pulse which should be large enough to cause the formation of the considered nonlinear modes and small enough to prevent particle ablation

    With the active renewal and development of science and technology in society, there is an objective need for continuous improvement of competencies for the implementation of qualified professional activities. The issues of retraining and advanced training of specialists are becoming particularly important, which necessitates the development of additional education. The purpose of the article is to analyze the experience of additional education. Based on the necessary regulatory support, the University organizes the activities of the Institute of continuing education, which prepares students for programs of courses of different directions. The authors analyzed the program of additional training, highlighted its features. The methodological support of the courses is highlighted. Analysis of the experience of additional education courses showed their high level of demand among students, so it is planned to expand the scientific and methodological support for the implementation of additional areas.Con la renovación activa y el desarrollo de la ciencia y la tecnología en la sociedad, existe una necesidad objetiva de mejora continua de las competencias para la implementación de actividades profesionales calificadas. Los temas de reciclaje y capacitación avanzada de especialistas se están volviendo particularmente importantes, lo que requiere el desarrollo de educación adicional. El propósito del artículo es analizar la experiencia de la educación adicional. Basado en el apoyo regulatorio necesario, la Universidad organiza las actividades del Instituto de educación continua, que prepara a los estudiantes para programas de cursos de diferentes direcciones. Los autores analizaron el programa de capacitación adicional, destacaron sus características. Se destaca el apoyo metodológico de los cursos. El análisis de la experiencia de los cursos de educación adicional mostró su alto nivel de demanda entre los estudiantes, por lo que está previsto ampliar el apoyo científico y metodológico para la implementación de áreas adicionales.При активном обновлении и развитии науки и техники в обществе возникает объективная необходимость постоянного совершенствования компетенций для осуществления квалифицированной профессиональной деятельности. Особую актуальность приобретают вопросы переподготовки и повышения квалификации специалистов, что обуславливает необходимость развития дополнительного образования. Целью статьи является анализ опыта дополнительного образования. Опираясь на необходимое нормативное обеспечение, университет организует деятельность Института непрерывного образования, который готовит студентов по программам курсов различных направлений. Авторы проанализировали программу дополнительного обучения, выделили ее особенности. Выделено методическое обеспечение курсов. Анализ опыта проведения курсов дополнительного образования показал их высокий уровень востребованности среди студентов, поэтому планируется расширить научно-методическое обеспечение реализации дополнительных направлений
