The First World War Centenary in the UK: âA Truly National Commemorationâ?
Prime Minister David Cameron has called for âa truly national commemoration of the First World Warâ. This article shows this to be problematic, politicised and contested. This is in part due to the elision of English and British histories. Scottish, Welsh and Irish responses are noted, and the role and commemorations of âour friends in the Commonwealthâ. There are tensions around interpretations of empire and race. There has been a failure to appreciate that the debates about the legacies of the First World War are deeply entangled with those of colonialism
Hybrid applications over XML - integrating the declarative and navigational approaches
We discuss the design of a quasi-statically typed language for XML in which data may be associated with different structures and different algebras in different scopes, whilst preserving identity. In declarative scopes, data are trees and may be queried with the full flexibility associated with XML query algebras. In procedural scopes, data have more conventional structures, such as records and sets, and can be manipulated with the constructs normally found in mainstream languages. For its original form of structural polymorphism, the language offers integrated support for the development of hybrid applications over XML, where data change form to re flct programming expectations and enable their enforcement
Modeling Long- and Short-Term Temporal Patterns with Deep Neural Networks
Multivariate time series forecasting is an important machine learning problem
across many domains, including predictions of solar plant energy output,
electricity consumption, and traffic jam situation. Temporal data arise in
these real-world applications often involves a mixture of long-term and
short-term patterns, for which traditional approaches such as Autoregressive
models and Gaussian Process may fail. In this paper, we proposed a novel deep
learning framework, namely Long- and Short-term Time-series network (LSTNet),
to address this open challenge. LSTNet uses the Convolution Neural Network
(CNN) and the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to extract short-term local
dependency patterns among variables and to discover long-term patterns for time
series trends. Furthermore, we leverage traditional autoregressive model to
tackle the scale insensitive problem of the neural network model. In our
evaluation on real-world data with complex mixtures of repetitive patterns,
LSTNet achieved significant performance improvements over that of several
state-of-the-art baseline methods. All the data and experiment codes are

Correlation length scalings in fusion edge plasma turbulence computations
The effect of changes in plasma parameters, that are characteristic near or
at an L-H transition in fusion edge plasmas, on fluctuation correlation lengths
are analysed by means of drift-Alfven turbulence computations. Scalings by
density gradient length, collisionality, plasma beta, and by an imposed shear
flow are considered. It is found that strongly sheared flows lead to the
appearence of long-range correlations in electrostatic potential fluctuations
parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field.Comment: Submitted to "Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion
Designing hollow nano gold golf balls.
Hollow/porous nanoparticles, including nanocarriers, nanoshells, and mesoporous materials have applications in catalysis, photonics, biosensing, and delivery of theranostic agents. Using a hierarchical template synthesis scheme, we have synthesized a nanocarrier mimicking a golf ball, consisting of (i) solid silica core with a pitted gold surface and (ii) a hollow/porous gold shell without silica. The template consisted of 100 nm polystyrene beads attached to a larger silica core. Selective gold plating of the core followed by removal of the polystyrene beads produced a golf ball-like nanostructure with 100 nm pits. Dissolution of the silica core produced a hollow/porous golf ball-like nanostructure

The work described in this paper is part of the IROMEC project (Interactive Robotic Social Mediators as Companions) that recognizes the important role of play in child development and targets children who are prevented from or inhibited in playing. The project investigates the role of an interactive, autonomous robotic toy in therapy and education for children with special needs. This paper specifically addresses the therapeutic and educational objectives related to children with autism. In recent years, robots have already been used to teach basic social interaction skills to children with autism. The added value of the IROMEC robot is that play scenarios have been developed taking children's specific strengths and needs into consideration and covering a wide range of objectives in children's development areas (sensory, communicational and interaction, motor, cognitive and social and emotional). The paper describes children's developmental areas and illustrates how different experiences and interactions with the IROMEC robot are designed to target objectives in these areas.Final Published versio
Structural investigation and compression of a co-crystal of indomethacin and saccharin
The co-crystalline structure of the non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory indomethacin with the non-toxic, Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) sweetener component saccharin was investigated up to 6.33 GPa using a Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC). Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements show that the co-crystal remains in the same triclinic, P-1, phase throughout the compression with a significant reduction in void space (155.69 to 55.61Ă
3). Information on the response of different types of intermolecular interactions to external force at the same time is enabled by the use of a co-crystal. We have rationalised that the length and compression rate of the saccharin amide dimer in the co-crystal is caused by the dimer sitting in a âpocketâ surrounded by the indomethacin framework. This framework reduces the effects of molecular packing on the dimer allowing for an ideal hydrogen bonding geometry
Sub-threshold resonances in few-neutron systems
Three- and four-neutron systems are studied within the framework of the
hyperspherical approach with a local S-wave nn-potential. Possible bound and
resonant states of these systems are sought as zeros of three- and four-body
Jost functions in the complex momentum plane. It is found that zeros closest to
the origin correspond to sub-threshold (nnn) (1/2-) and (nnnn) (0+) resonant
states. The positions of these zeros turned out to be sensitive to the choice
of the --potential. For the Malfliet- Tjon potential they are
E(nnn)=-4.9-i6.9 (MeV) and E(nnnn)=-2.6-i9.0 (MeV). Movement of the zeros with
an artificial increase of the potential strength also shows an extreme
sensitivity to the choice of potential. Thus, to generate ^3n and ^4n bound
states, the Yukawa potential needs to be multiplied by 2.67 and 2.32
respectively, while for the Malfliet-Tjon potential the required multiplicative

Polls and the political process: the use of opinion polls by political parties and mass media organizations in European postâcommunist societies (1990â95)
Opinion polling occupies a significant role within the political process of most liberal-capitalist societies, where it is used by governments, parties and the mass media alike. This paper examines the extent to which polls are used for the same purposes in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and in particular, for bringing political elites and citizens together. It argues that these political elites are more concerned with using opinion polls for gaining competitive advantage over their rivals and for reaffirming their political power, than for devolving political power to citizens and improving the general processes of democratization
