Capturing Hiproofs in HOL Light
Hierarchical proof trees (hiproofs for short) add structure to ordinary proof
trees, by allowing portions of trees to be hierarchically nested. The
additional structure can be used to abstract away from details, or to label
particular portions to explain their purpose. In this paper we present two
complementary methods for capturing hiproofs in HOL Light, along with a tool to
produce web-based visualisations. The first method uses tactic recording, by
modifying tactics to record their arguments and construct a hierarchical tree;
this allows a tactic proof script to be modified. The second method uses proof
recording, which extends the HOL Light kernel to record hierachical proof trees
alongside theorems. This method is less invasive, but requires care to manage
the size of the recorded objects. We have implemented both methods, resulting
in two systems: Tactician and HipCam
Distributed utterances
I propose an apparatus for handling intrasentential change in context. The standard approach has problems with sentences with multiple occurrences of the same demonstrative or indexical. My proposal involves the idea that contexts can be complex. Complex contexts are built out of (“simple”) Kaplanian contexts by ordered n-tupling. With these we can revise the clauses of Kaplan’s Logic of Demonstratives so that each part of a sentence is taken in a different component of a complex context.
I consider other applications of the framework: to agentially distributed utterances (ones made partly by one speaker and partly by another); to an account of scare-quoting; and to an account of a binding-like phenomenon that avoids what Kit Fine calls “the antinomy of the variable.
The need to promote behaviour change at the cultural level: one factor explaining the limited impact of the MEMA kwa Vijana adolescent sexual health intervention in rural Tanzania. A process evaluation
Background - Few of the many behavioral sexual health interventions in Africa have been rigorously evaluated. Where biological outcomes have been measured, improvements have rarely been found. One of the most rigorous trials was of the multi-component MEMA kwa Vijana adolescent sexual health programme, which showed improvements in knowledge and reported attitudes and behaviour, but none in biological outcomes. This paper attempts to explain these outcomes by reviewing the process evaluation findings, particularly in terms of contextual factors.
Methods - A large-scale, primarily qualitative process evaluation based mainly on participant observation identified the principal contextual barriers and facilitators of behavioural change.
Results - The contextual barriers involved four interrelated socio-structural factors: culture (i.e. shared practices and systems of belief), economic circumstances, social status, and gender. At an individual level they appeared to operate through the constructs of the theories underlying MEMA kwa Vijana - Social Cognitive Theory and the Theory of Reasoned Action – but the intervention was unable to substantially modify these individual-level constructs, apart from knowledge.
Conclusion - The process evaluation suggests that one important reason for this failure is that the intervention did not operate sufficiently at a structural level, particularly in regard to culture. Recently most structural interventions have focused on gender or/and economics. Complementing these with a cultural approach could address the belief systems that justify and perpetuate gender and economic inequalities, as well as other barriers to behaviour change
Astrometric orbits of SB9 stars
Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) have been used to derive
astrometric orbital elements for spectroscopic binaries from the newly released
Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (SB9). Among the 1374 binaries
from SB9 which have an HIP entry, 282 have detectable orbital astrometric
motion (at the 5% significance level). Among those, only 70 have astrometric
orbital elements that are reliably determined (according to specific
statistical tests discussed in the paper), and for the first time for 20
systems, representing a 10% increase relative to the 235 DMSA/O systems already
present in the Hipparcos Double and Multiple Systems Annex.
The detection of the astrometric orbital motion when the Hipparcos IAD are
supplemented by the spectroscopic orbital elements is close to 100% for
binaries with only one visible component, provided that the period is in the 50
- 1000 d range and the parallax is larger than 5 mas. This result is an
interesting testbed to guide the choice of algorithms and statistical tests to
be used in the search for astrometric binaries during the forthcoming ESA Gaia
mission.
Finally, orbital inclinations provided by the present analysis have been used
to derive several astrophysical quantities. For instance, 29 among the 70
systems with reliable astrometric orbital elements involve main sequence stars
for which the companion mass could be derived. Some interesting conclusions may
be drawn from this new set of stellar masses, like the enigmatic nature of the
companion to the Hyades F dwarf HIP 20935. This system has a mass ratio of 0.98

Intimacy negotiated: the management of relationships and the construction of personal communities in the lives of bisexual women and men
Bringing into dialogue conceptual literature on bisexuality, intimacy, and personal community, this article illuminates the lived experiences of 80 bisexual women and men in the UK. The data were collected through questionnaire and individual interview. The article discusses two empirical themes, beginning with the participants' narratives on their engagement with the dominant sexual and gender order – which hegemonizes 'monosexuality' and 'compulsory monogamy' – in their negotiation of relational intimacy. This is followed by an exploration of the features and functions of their personal communities, especially the significance of friendships. The article argues that, despite the ambivalence and misperception surrounding bisexuality, the participants enacted creative agency in negotiating intimacy and social support in their everyday lives
Targeting the epigenome: effects of epigenetic treatment strategies on genomic stability in healthy human cells
Epigenetic treatment concepts have long been ascribed as being tumour-selective. Over the last decade, it has become evident that epigenetic mechanisms are essential for a wide range of intracellular functions in healthy cells as well. Evaluation of possible side-effects and their underlying mechanisms in healthy human cells is necessary in order to improve not only patient safety, but also to support future drug development. Since epigenetic regulation directly interacts with genomic and chromosomal packaging density, increasing genomic instability may be a result subsequent to drug-induced epigenetic modifications. This review highlights past and current research efforts on the influence of epigenetic modification on genomic stability in healthy human cells
Theorising Multi-partner Relationships and Sexualities – Recent Work on Non-monogamy and Polyamory (Book review)
This review article attests to the maturation of research into consensual non-monogamy
and polyamory. It provides an in-depth review of a selection of recent publications
that push boundaries and pair interdisciplinary inquiry with queer sensibility and theoretical
sophistication in the three areas of theorizing emotions, theorizing intimacies and
sexualities and theorizing discourses and the public sphere. This work foregrounds the
persistence of moral normativity and judgemental attitudes regarding consensual nonmonogamy.
It underscores the power dimension around non/monogamy and reveals the
complexity of contradictory dynamics of discrimination and privileging around non/
monogamous life choices. It shows how non-monogamous people deconstruct feeling
rules and demonstrates the nodal function of gender and race/ethnicity in the discursive
framings of different forms of non-monogamy

Clinical development of new drug-radiotherapy combinations.
In countries with the best cancer outcomes, approximately 60% of patients receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment, which is one of the most cost-effective cancer treatments. Notably, around 40% of cancer cures include the use of radiotherapy, either as a single modality or combined with other treatments. Radiotherapy can provide enormous benefit to patients with cancer. In the past decade, significant technical advances, such as image-guided radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and proton therapy enable higher doses of radiotherapy to be delivered to the tumour with significantly lower doses to normal surrounding tissues. However, apart from the combination of traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy with radiotherapy, little progress has been made in identifying and defining optimal targeted therapy and radiotherapy combinations to improve the efficacy of cancer treatment. The National Cancer Research Institute Clinical and Translational Radiotherapy Research Working Group (CTRad) formed a Joint Working Group with representatives from academia, industry, patient groups and regulatory bodies to address this lack of progress and to publish recommendations for future clinical research. Herein, we highlight the Working Group's consensus recommendations to increase the number of novel drugs being successfully registered in combination with radiotherapy to improve clinical outcomes for patients with cancer.National Institute for Health ResearchThis is the final version of the article.
