A Broad Search for Counterrotating Gas and Stars: Evidence for Mergers and Accretion
We measure the frequency of bulk gas-stellar counterrotation in a sample of
67 galaxies drawn from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative
survey of the local galaxy population down to M_B-15. We detect 4
counterrotators among 17 E/S0's with extended gas emission (24% +8 -6). In
contrast, we find no clear examples of bulk counterrotation among 38 Sa-Sbc
spirals, although one Sa does show peculiar gas kinematics. This result implies
that, at 95% confidence, no more than 8% of Sa-Sbc spirals are bulk
counterrotators. Among types Sc and later, we identify only one possible
counterrotator, a Magellanic irregular. We use these results together with the
physical properties of the counterrotators to constrain possible origins for

Vacuum energy in the presence of a magnetic string with delta function profile
We present a calculation of the ground state energy of massive spinor fields
and massive scalar fields in the background of an inhomogeneous magnetic string
with potential given by a delta function. The zeta functional regularization is
used and the lowest heat kernel coefficients are calculated. The rest of the
analytical calculation adopts the Jost function formalism. In the numerical
part of the work the renormalized vacuum energy as a function of the radius
of the string is calculated and plotted for various values of the strength of
the potential. The sign of the energy is found to change with the radius. For
both scalar and spinor fields the renormalized energy shows no logarithmic
behaviour in the limit , as was expected from the vanishing of the heat
kernel coefficient , which is not zero for other types of profiles.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figure
Galactic bulge formation as a maximum intensity starburst
Properties of normal galactic star formation, including the density
dependence, threshold density, turbulent scaling relations, and clustering
properties, are applied to the formation of galactic bulges. One important
difference is that the bulge potential well is too deep to have allowed
self-regulation or blow-out by the pressures from young stars, unlike galactic
disks or dwarf galaxies. As a result, bulge formation should have been at the
maximum rate, which is such that most of the gas would get converted into stars
in only a few dynamical time scales, or ~10^8 years. The gas accretion phase
can be longer than this, but once the critical density is reached, which
depends primarily on the total virial density from dark matter, the formation
of stars in the bulge should have been extremely rapid. Such three-dimensional
star formation should also have formed many clusters, like normal disk star
formation today. Some of these clusters may have survived as old globulars, but
most got dispersed, although they might still be observable as concentrated

Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier B.V.A carbonaceous (heterotrophic) activated sludge process (ASP), nitrifying ASP and a nitrifying/denitrifying ASP have been studied to examine the role of process type in steroid estrogen removal. Biodegradation efficiencies for total steroid estrogens (ΣEST) of 80 and 91% were recorded for the nitrifying/denitrifying ASP and nitrifying ASP respectively. Total estrogen biodegradation (ΣEST) was only 51% at the carbonaceous ASP, however, the extent of biodegradation in the absence of nitrification clearly indicates the important role of heterotrophs in steroid estrogen removal. The low removal efficiency did not correlate with biomass activity for which the ASPcarbonaceous recorded 80 μg kg−1 biomass d−1 compared to 61 and 15 μg kg−1 biomass d−1 at the ASPnitrifying and ASPnitrifying/denitrifying respectively. This finding was explained by a moderate correlation (r2 = 0.55) between total estrogen loading (ΣEST mg m−3 d−1) and biomass activity (μg ΣEST degraded kg−1 d−1) and has established the impact of loading on steroid estrogen removal at full-scale. At higher solids retention time (SRT), steroid estrogen biodegradation of >80% was observed, as has previously been reported. It is postulated that hydraulic retention time (HRT) is as important as SRT as this governs both reaction time and loading. Quality of care after acute coronary syndromes in a prospective cohort with reasons for non-prescription of recommended medications.
BACKGROUND: Adherence to guidelines is associated with improved outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Clinical registries developed to assess quality of care at discharge often do not collect the reasons for non-prescription for proven efficacious preventive medication in Continental Europe. In a prospective cohort of patients hospitalized for an ACS, we aimed at measuring the rate of recommended treatment at discharge, using pre-specified quality indicators recommended in cardiologic guidelines and including systematic collection of reasons for non-prescription for preventive medications.
METHODS: In a prospective cohort with 1260 patients hospitalized for ACS, we measured the rate of recommended treatment at discharge in 4 academic centers in Switzerland. Performance measures for medication at discharge were pre-specified according to guidelines, systematically collected for all patients and included in a centralized database.
RESULTS: Six hundred and eighty eight patients(54.6%) were discharged with a main diagnosis of STEMI, 491(39%) of NSTEMI and 81(6.4%) of unstable angina. Mean age was 64 years and 21.3% were women. 94.6% were prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers at discharge when only considering raw prescription rates, but increased to 99.5% when including reasons non-prescription. For statins, rates increased from 98% to 98.6% when including reasons for non-prescription and for beta-blockers, from 82% to 93%. For aspirin, rates further increased from 99.4% to 100% and from to 99.8% to 100% for P2Y12 inhibitors.
CONCLUSIONS: We found a very high adherence to ACS guidelines for drug prescriptions at discharge when including reasons for non-prescription to drug therapy. For beta-blockers, prescription rates were suboptimal, even after taking into account reason for non-prescription. In an era of improving quality of care to achieve 100% prescription rates at discharge unless contra-indicated, pre-specification of reasons for non-prescription for cardiovascular preventive medication permits to identify remaining gaps in quality of care at discharge.

Influence of operating parameters on the biodegradation of steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds during biological wastewater treatment processes

To access the final edited and published work see http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es901612v.This study investigated operational factors influencing the removal of steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds in two sewage treatment works, one a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant and the other a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant with phosphorus removal. Removal efficiencies of >90% for steroid estrogens and for longer chain nonylphenol ethoxylates (NP4−12EO) were observed at both works, which had equal sludge ages of 13 days. However, the biological activity in terms of milligrams of estrogen removed per day per tonne of biomass was found to be 50−60% more efficient in the nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge works compared to the works which additionally incorporated phosphorus removal. A temperature reduction of 6 °C had no impact on the removal of free estrogens, but removal of the conjugated estrone-3-sulfate was reduced by 20%. The apparent biomass sorption (LogKp) values were greater in the nitrifying/denitrifying works than those in the nitrifying/denitrifying works with phosphorus removal for both steroid estrogens and nonylphenolic compounds possibly indicating a different cell surface structure and therefore microbial population. The difference in biological activity (mg tonne−1 d−1) identified in this study, of up to seven times, suggests that there is the potential for enhancing the removal of estrogens and nonylphenols if more detailed knowledge of the factors responsible for these differences can be identified and maximized, thus potentially improving the quality of receiving waters.Public Utilities Board (Singapore), Anglian Water Ltd, Severn Trent Water Ltd, Thames Water Utilities Ltd, United Utilities 393 Plc and Yorkshire Water Services
Satellite abundances around bright isolated galaxies
We study satellite galaxy abundances in SDSS by counting photometric galaxies
around isolated bright primaries. We present results as a function of the
luminosity, stellar mass and colour of the satellites, and of the stellar mass
and colour of the primaries. For massive primaries the luminosity and stellar
mass functions of satellites are similar in shape to those of field galaxies,
but for lower mass primaries they are significantly steeper. The steepening is
particularly marked for the stellar mass function. Satellite abundance
increases strongly with primary stellar mass, approximately in proportion to
expected dark halo mass. Massive red primaries have up to a factor of 2 more
satellites than blue ones of the same stellar mass. Satellite galaxies are
systematically redder than field galaxies of the same stellar mass. Satellites
are also systematically redder around more massive primaries. At fixed primary
mass, they are redder around red primaries. We select similarly isolated
galaxies from mock catalogues based on the simulations of Guo et al.(2011) and
analyze them in parallel with the SDSS data. The simulation reproduces all the
above trends qualitatively, except for the steepening of the satellite
luminosity and stellar mass functions. Model satellites, however, are
systematically redder than in the SDSS, particularly at low mass and around
low-mass primaries. Simulated haloes of a given mass have satellite abundances
that are independent of central galaxy colour, but red centrals tend to have
lower stellar masses, reflecting earlier quenching of their star formation by
feedback. This explains the correlation between satellite abundance and primary
colour in the simulation. The correlation between satellite colour and primary
colour arises because red centrals live in haloes which are more massive, older
and more gas-rich, so that satellite quenching is more efficient.Comment: 29 pages, 24 figure
