Updating constraint preconditioners for KKT systems in quadratic programming via low-rank corrections
This work focuses on the iterative solution of sequences of KKT linear
systems arising in interior point methods applied to large convex quadratic
programming problems. This task is the computational core of the interior point
procedure and an efficient preconditioning strategy is crucial for the
efficiency of the overall method. Constraint preconditioners are very effective
in this context; nevertheless, their computation may be very expensive for
large-scale problems, and resorting to approximations of them may be
convenient. Here we propose a procedure for building inexact constraint
preconditioners by updating a "seed" constraint preconditioner computed for a
KKT matrix at a previous interior point iteration. These updates are obtained
through low-rank corrections of the Schur complement of the (1,1) block of the
seed preconditioner. The updated preconditioners are analyzed both
theoretically and computationally. The results obtained show that our updating
procedure, coupled with an adaptive strategy for determining whether to
reinitialize or update the preconditioner, can enhance the performance of
interior point methods on large problems.Comment: 22 page

Primary gas thermometry by means of laser-absorption spectroscopy: Determination of the Boltzmann constant
We report on a new optical implementation of primary gas thermometry based on
laser absorption spectrometry in the near infrared. The method consists in
retrieving the Doppler broadening from highly accurate observations of the line
shape of the R(12) transition in
CO gas at thermodynamic equilibrium. Doppler width measurements as a
function of gas temperature, ranging between the triple point of water and the
gallium melting point, allowed for a spectroscopic determination of the
Boltzmann constant with a relative accuracy of .Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Patient well‐being after general anaesthesia: a prospective, randomized, controlled multi‐centre trial comparing intravenous and inhalation anaesthesia
Background. The aim of this study was to assess postoperative patient well‐being after total i.v. anaesthesia compared with inhalation anaesthesia by means of validated psychometric tests. Methods. With ethics committee approval, 305 patients undergoing minor elective gynaecologic or orthopaedic interventions were assigned randomly to total i.v. anaesthesia using propofol or inhalation anaesthesia using sevoflurane. The primary outcome measurement was the actual mental state 90 min and 24 h after anaesthesia assessed by a blinded observer using the Adjective Mood Scale (AMS) and the State‐Trait‐Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and postoperative pain level were determined by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) 90 min and 24 h after anaesthesia (secondary outcome measurements). Patient satisfaction was evaluated using a VAS 24 h after anaesthesia. Results. The AMS and STAI scores were significantly better 90 min after total i.v. anaesthesia compared with inhalation anaesthesia (P=0.02, P=0.05, respectively), but equal 24 h after both anaesthetic techniques (P=0.90, P=0.78, respectively); patient satisfaction was comparable (P=0.26). Postoperative pain was comparable in both groups 90 min and 24 h after anaesthesia (P=0.11, P=0.12, respectively). The incidence of postoperative nausea was reduced after total i.v. compared with inhalation anaesthesia at 90 min (7 vs 35%, P<0.001), and 24 h (33 vs 52%, P=0.001). Conclusion. Total i.v. anaesthesia improves early postoperative patient well‐being and reduces the incidence of PONV. Br J Anaesth 2003; 91: 631-
Inverted tracking algorithm for the field survey through artificial vision and robotics
The area of artificial vision and robotics has very important advances in the recognition and tracking of objects, not only in indoor scenes but also in outdoor ones. These methods and algorithms have given rise to very important technological advances in different areas of knowledge. In the area of Precision Agriculture, the main problem of its use lies in its application in field surveys, whereas in the case of cultivation, we will have fixed objects (seedlings) in established spaces (furrows and plots), but in uncontrolled environments. The determination of the density of these crops and their distance between furrows among other data is in many cases, relevant to their performance. It is the purpose of this paper to solve the automated sensing of this data through the use of cameras and artificial vision techniques. In this work, an inverted tracking algorithm is defined in order to automatically determine the necessary shot-points by means of which the cameras involved as sensors on a robotic platform capture scene images. This will help to survey the density and distance of the crop to be analyzed
A Geographically-Restricted but Prevalent Mycobacterium tuberculosis Strain Identified in the West Midlands Region of the UK between 1995 and 2008
Background: We describe the identification of, and risk factors for, the single most prevalent Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain in the West Midlands region of the UK.Methodology/Principal Findings: Prospective 15-locus MIRU-VNTR genotyping of all M. tuberculosis isolates in the West Midlands between 2004 and 2008 was undertaken. Two retrospective epidemiological investigations were also undertaken using univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis. The first study of all TB patients in the West Midlands between 2004 and 2008 identified a single prevalent strain in each of the study years (total 155/3,056 (5%) isolates). This prevalent MIRU-VNTR profile (32333 2432515314 434443183) remained clustered after typing with an additional 9-loci MIRU-VNTR and spoligotyping. The majority of these patients (122/155, 79%) resided in three major cities located within a 40 km radius. From the apparent geographical restriction, we have named this the "Mercian" strain. A multivariate analysis of all TB patients in the West Midlands identified that infection with a Mercian strain was significantly associated with being UK-born (OR = 9.03, 95% CI = 4.56-17.87, p 65 years old (OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.09-0.67, p < 0.01). A second more detailed investigation analyzed a cohort of 82 patients resident in Wolverhampton between 2003 and 2006. A significant association with being born in the UK remained after a multivariate analysis (OR = 9.68, 95% CI = 2.00-46.78, p < 0.01) and excess alcohol intake and cannabis use (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 1.45-27.02, p = .01) were observed as social risk factors for infection.Conclusions/Significance: The continued consistent presence of the Mercian strain suggests ongoing community transmission. Whilst significant associations have been found, there may be other common risk factors yet to be identified. Future investigations should focus on targeting the relevant risk groups and elucidating the biological factors that mediate continued transmission of this strain

Detectors for the James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Spectrograph I: Readout Mode, Noise Model, and Calibration Considerations
We describe how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared
Spectrograph's (NIRSpec's) detectors will be read out, and present a model of
how noise scales with the number of multiple non-destructive reads
sampling-up-the-ramp. We believe that this noise model, which is validated
using real and simulated test data, is applicable to most astronomical
near-infrared instruments. We describe some non-ideal behaviors that have been
observed in engineering grade NIRSpec detectors, and demonstrate that they are
unlikely to affect NIRSpec sensitivity, operations, or calibration. These
include a HAWAII-2RG reset anomaly and random telegraph noise (RTN). Using real
test data, we show that the reset anomaly is: (1) very nearly noiseless and (2)
can be easily calibrated out. Likewise, we show that large-amplitude RTN
affects only a small and fixed population of pixels. It can therefore be
tracked using standard pixel operability maps.Comment: 55 pages, 10 figure
