Efficient continuous collision detection for bounding boxes under rational motion
This paper presents a simple yet precise and efficient algorithm for collision prediction of two oriented bounding boxes under univariate (piecewise) rational motion. We present an analytic solution to the problem of finding the time of collision and the feature involved, or declaring that no collision should occur. Our solution can be applied to boxes of any size, under arbitrary rational rigid motion. The algorithm is based on the efficient examination of the Minkowski sum (MS) of the two boxes, using a spherical Gauss map dual representation, and a precise extraction of the collision time, if any, as a solution to a set of rational equations that are automatically derived. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Insecticide resistance and the future of malaria control in Zambia.
BACKGROUND: In line with the Global trend to improve malaria control efforts a major campaign of insecticide treated net distribution was initiated in 1999 and indoor residual spraying with DDT or pyrethroids was reintroduced in 2000 in Zambia. In 2006, these efforts were strengthened by the President's Malaria Initiative. This manuscript reports on the monitoring and evaluation of these activities and the potential impact of emerging insecticide resistance on disease transmission. METHODS: Mosquitoes were captured daily through a series of 108 window exit traps located at 18 sentinel sites. Specimens were identified to species and analyzed for sporozoites. Adult Anopheles mosquitoes were collected resting indoors and larva collected in breeding sites were reared to F1 and F0 generations in the lab and tested for insecticide resistance following the standard WHO susceptibility assay protocol. Annual cross sectional household parasite surveys were carried out to monitor the impact of the control programme on prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum in children aged 1 to 14 years. RESULTS: A total of 619 Anopheles gambiae s.l. and 228 Anopheles funestus s.l. were captured from window exit traps throughout the period, of which 203 were An. gambiae malaria vectors and 14 An. funestus s.s.. In 2010 resistance to DDT and the pyrethroids deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin was detected in both An. gambiae s.s. and An. funestus s.s.. No sporozoites were detected in either species. Prevalence of P. falciparum in the sentinel sites remained below 10% throughout the study period. CONCLUSION: Both An. gambiae s.s. and An. funestus s.s. were controlled effectively with the ITN and IRS programme in Zambia, maintaining a reduced disease transmission and burden. However, the discovery of DDT and pyrethroid resistance in the country threatens the sustainability of the vector control programme
Quantifying Long-Term Urban Grassland Dynamics: Biotic Homogenization and Extinction Debts
Sustainable urban nature conservation calls for a rethinking of conventional approaches. Traditionally, conservationists have not incorporated the history of the landscape in management strategies. This study shows that extant vegetation patterns are correlated to past landscapes indicating potential extinction debts. We calculated urban landscape measures for seven time periods (1938–2019) and correlated it to three vegetation sampling events (1995, 2012, 2019) using GLM models. We also tested whether urban vegetation was homogenizing. Our results indicated that urban vegetation in our study area is not currently homogenizing but that indigenous forb species richness is declining significantly. Furthermore, long-term studies are essential as the time lags identified for different vegetation sampling periods changed as well as the drivers best predicting these changes. Understanding these dynamics are critical to ensuring sustainable conservation of urban vegetation for future citizens
The effectiveness of axial flow fans in a-frame plenums
Thesis (PhD (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering)--University of Stellenbosch, 1990.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ultimate goal of this project is to ensure a better understanding of the governing
mechanisms present when flow distorting components are installed in close proximity of
an axial flow fan.
The effect of different parameters on the operation of axial flow fans is investigated. These
parameters are divided into flow enhancing and flow reduction effects. The performance
of an axial flow fan can be enhanced by changing the tip clearance, by adding a solid
disc to the hub of the fan or by varying the number of fan blades. Flow reductions are
caused by components such as inlet grids, walkways and their supporting structures, heat
exchangers and windwalls.
The effects of flow enhancing components are measured and compared to the results of
other authors. The sensitivity of these effects to parameters such as the type of fan rotor
and the specific system in which the rotor is installed is highlighted.
The system effect (the interaction between the fan rotor and flow resistances in close
proximity of each other) of individual components, as well as the combination of different
components, is predicted both theoretically and experimentally. These predictions are
compared to measured data relevant to the components in an installation where the system
effects are present. The results are correlated to the kinetic energy flux coefficient of the
flow at different locations within the installation.
Experimental data obtained from a full scale unit (inlet shroud diameter of 9,216 m) are
used to compare to scaled data from the model (inlet shroud diameter of 1,542 m). The
hub to tip ratio of the axial flow fans investigated is 0,15.
The most important conclusions are that the performance of the type of axial flow fan
under investigation can be improved by reducing its tip clearance and by installing a solid
disc to the downstream side of the rotor. An increase in the number of blades of the fan
leads to only marginal improvements in the fan performance. The overall performance of
the system can also be improved by removing some of the flow resisting components, or
by changing their relative positions. All these conclusions are based on the assumption

Earthworm assemblages in urban habitats across biogeographical regions
In urban landscapes, humans are the most significant factor determining belowground diversity, including earthworms. Within the framework of the Global Urban Soil Ecology and Education Network (GLUSEEN), a multi-city comparison was carried out to assess the effects of soil disturbance on earthworms. In each of five cities (Baltimore, USA; Budapest, Hungary; Helsinki and Lahti, Finland; Potchefstroom, South Africa), covering four climatic and biogeographical regions, four habitat types (ruderal, turf/lawn, remnant and reference) were sampled. The survey resulted in 19 species belonging to 9 genera and 4 families. The highest total species richness was recorded in Baltimore (16), while Budapest and the Finnish cities had relatively low (5–6) species numbers. Remnant forests and lawns supported the highest earthworm biomass. Soil properties (i.e. pH and organic matter content) explained neither earthworm community composition nor abundance. Evaluating all cities together, earthworm communities were significantly structured by habitat type. Communities in the two adjacent cities, Helsinki and Lahti were very similar, but Budapest clearly separated from the Finnish cities. Earthworm community structure in Baltimore overlapped with that of the other cities. Despite differences in climate, soils and biogeography among the cities, earthworm communities were highly similar within the urban habitat types. This indicates that human-mediated dispersal is an important factor shaping the urban fauna, both at local and regional scales.Peer reviewe
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone-stimulated cortisol release by the head kidney inter-renal tissue from sea bream (Sparus aurata) fed with linseed oil and soyabean oil
The mode of action of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in regulating gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) head kidney (HK) cortisol production was studied through in vitro trials using a dynamic superfusion system. Fish were previously fed with different diets containing several inclusion levels of linseed oil (LO) or soyabean oil (SO) for 26 weeks. Five diets were tested; anchovy oil was the only lipid source for the control diet (fish oil, FO) and two different substitution levels (70 and 100 %) were tested using either LO or SO (70LO, 70SO, 100LO and 100SO). Fatty acid compositions of the HK reflected the dietary input, thus EPA, DHA, arachidonic acid and n-3 HUFA were significantly (P,0·05) reduced in fish fed vegetable oils compared with fish fed the FO diet. Feeding 70 or 100% LO increased significantly (P,0·05) cortisol release in HK after stimulation with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), while feeding SO had no effect on this response. Cortisol stimulation factor (SF) was increased in fish fed the 70LO and 100LO diets compared with fish fed the control diet. Moreover, eicosanoid inhibition by incubating the HK tissue with indomethacin (INDO) as a cyclo-oxygenase (COX) inhibitor, or nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) as a lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitor, significantly reduced (P,0·05) the cortisol release after ACTH stimulation in the 70LO and 100LO diets. Cortisol SF was reduced in the FO, 70LO and 100LO diets when incubating the HK with INDO or NDGA, while it was increased in the 70SO diet. The present results indicate that changing the fatty acid profile of gilthead sea bream HK by including LO and/or SO in the fish diet affected the in vitro cortisol release, and this effect is partly mediated by COX and/or LOX metabolites
The Belgic Confession
This book investigates the contemporary relevance of the Belgic Confession. The book groups the 37 articles of the Belgic Confession together in order to cover the whole confession in 12 chapters (alongside an introductory chapter). The emphasis of the publication falls on two aspects: (1) providing a scope of contemporary theological, ethical and general issues and possible controversies regarding the content of the Belgic Confession; and (2) formulating ethical perspectives and guidelines from the Belgic Confession that may assist in the building of societies. Where applicable, chapters also discuss the history of the text of the Belgic Confession, the organic unity between the articles of the Belgic Confession, a dogma-historical perspective on the development of the doctrine/content of the Belgic Confession and the relationship between the Belgic Confession and other confessions
Előzetes eredmények városi talajok lebontó hatásfokának vizsgálatáról (GLUSEEN-Projekt, Budapest)
A „Global Urban Soil Ecology and Education” hálózat előkészítő kutatása második éve folyik – a világ 4 régiójának 5 helyszínén –, Magyarország részvételével.
RosettaScripts: A Scripting Language Interface to the Rosetta Macromolecular Modeling Suite
Macromolecular modeling and design are increasingly useful in basic research, biotechnology, and teaching. However, the absence of a user-friendly modeling framework that provides access to a wide range of modeling capabilities is hampering the wider adoption of computational methods by non-experts. RosettaScripts is an XML-like language for specifying modeling tasks in the Rosetta framework. RosettaScripts provides access to protocol-level functionalities, such as rigid-body docking and sequence redesign, and allows fast testing and deployment of complex protocols without need for modifying or recompiling the underlying C++ code. We illustrate these capabilities with RosettaScripts protocols for the stabilization of proteins, the generation of computationally constrained libraries for experimental selection of higher-affinity binding proteins, loop remodeling, small-molecule ligand docking, design of ligand-binding proteins, and specificity redesign in DNA-binding proteins
