Neural coding of naturalistic motion stimuli
We study a wide field motion sensitive neuron in the visual system of the
blowfly {\em Calliphora vicina}. By rotating the fly on a stepper motor outside
in a wooded area, and along an angular motion trajectory representative of
natural flight, we stimulate the fly's visual system with input that approaches
the natural situation. The neural response is analyzed in the framework of
information theory, using methods that are free from assumptions. We
demonstrate that information about the motion trajectory increases as the light
level increases over a natural range. This indicates that the fly's brain
utilizes the increase in photon flux to extract more information from the
photoreceptor array, suggesting that imprecision in neural signals is dominated
by photon shot noise in the physical input, rather than by noise generated

Multinationals and Unionism in Indonesia
This paper presents a critical analysis of the factors shaping the interaction between multinationals and trade unions in Indonesia, focusing on the recent period of democratization following the downfall of the Suharto regime. It has been suggested that union growth risks undermining Indonesia’s competitive advantages (cheap labour) and could encourage the exit of multinationals to cheaper competitors. In order to test this proposition, two case studies were conducted: one in the automotive industry and the other in the banking industry.The paper first provides an overview of multinational activity and FDI in Indonesia, and their interaction with a nascent union movement. This is followed by presenting the findings of interviews conducted at the multinational enterprises with managers and union officials; to provide empirical insights into the bargaining process. The final part of the paper provides a preliminary assessment of the impact of union behaviour on MNC profitability and competitiveness in Indonesia. In contrast to traditional views of unions as impeding MNC profitability and “encouraging” exit, the paper finds that unions and MNCs can engage in constructive partnerships, but that pressures and contradictions in the relationship remain
Universal Statistical Behavior of Neural Spike Trains
We construct a model that predicts the statistical properties of spike trains
generated by a sensory neuron. The model describes the combined effects of the
neuron's intrinsic properties, the noise in the surrounding, and the external
driving stimulus. We show that the spike trains exhibit universal statistical
behavior over short times, modulated by a strongly stimulus-dependent behavior
over long times. These predictions are confirmed in experiments on H1, a
motion-sensitive neuron in the fly visual system.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Entropy and information in neural spike trains: Progress on the sampling problem
The major problem in information theoretic analysis of neural responses and
other biological data is the reliable estimation of entropy--like quantities
from small samples. We apply a recently introduced Bayesian entropy estimator
to synthetic data inspired by experiments, and to real experimental spike
trains. The estimator performs admirably even very deep in the undersampled
regime, where other techniques fail. This opens new possibilities for the
information theoretic analysis of experiments, and may be of general interest

Why pinning by surface irregularities can explain the peak effect in transport properties and neutron diffraction results in NbSe2 and Bi-2212 crystals?
The existence of a peak effect in transport properties (a maximum of the
critical current as function of magnetic field) is a well-known but still
intriguing feature of type II superconductors such as NbSe2 and Bi-2212. Using
a model of pinning by surface irregularities in anisotropic superconductors, we
have developed a calculation of the critical current which allows estimating
quantitatively the critical current in both the high critical current phase and
in the low critical current phase. The only adjustable parameter of this model
is the angle of the vortices at the surface. The agreement between the
measurements and the model is really very impressive. In this framework, the
anomalous dynamical properties close to the peak effect is due to co-existence
of two different vortex states with different critical currents. Recent neutron
diffraction data in NbSe2 crystals in presence of transport current support
this point of view
Noise in neurons is message-dependent
Neuronal responses are conspicuously variable. We focus on one particular
aspect of that variability: the precision of action potential timing. We show
that for common models of noisy spike generation, elementary considerations
imply that such variability is a function of the input, and can be made
arbitrarily large or small by a suitable choice of inputs. Our considerations
are expected to extend to virtually any mechanism of spike generation, and we
illustrate them with data from the visual pathway. Thus, a simplification
usually made in the application of information theory to neural processing is
violated: noise {\sl is not independent of the message}. However, we also show
the existence of {\sl error-correcting} topologies, which can achieve better

Take their word for it: The symbolic role of linguistic style matches in user communities
User communities are increasingly becoming an essential element of companies' business processes. However, reaping the benefits of such social systems does not always prove effective, often because companies fail to stimulate members' collaboration continuously or neglect their social integration. Following communication accommodation theory, the authors posit that members' communication style alignment symbolically reflects their community identification and affects subsequent participation behavior. This research uses text mining to extract the linguistic style properties of 74,246 members' posts across 37 user communities. Two mixed multilevel Poisson regression models show that when members' linguistic style matches with the conventional community style, it signals their community identification and affects their participation quantity and quality. Drawing on an expanded view of organizational identification, the authors consider dynamics in members' social identification by examining trends and reversals in linguistic style match developments. Whereas a stronger trend of alignment leads to greater participation quantity and quality, frequent reversals suggest lower participation quantity. At a community level, greater synchronicity in the linguistic style across all community members fosters individual members' participation behavior
Applications of Information Theory to Analysis of Neural Data
Information theory is a practical and theoretical framework developed for the
study of communication over noisy channels. Its probabilistic basis and
capacity to relate statistical structure to function make it ideally suited for
studying information flow in the nervous system. It has a number of useful
properties: it is a general measure sensitive to any relationship, not only
linear effects; it has meaningful units which in many cases allow direct
comparison between different experiments; and it can be used to study how much
information can be gained by observing neural responses in single trials,
rather than in averages over multiple trials. A variety of information
theoretic quantities are commonly used in neuroscience - (see entry
"Definitions of Information-Theoretic Quantities"). In this entry we review
some applications of information theory in neuroscience to study encoding of

Does abscisic acid affect strigolactone biosynthesis?
Strigolactones are considered a novel class of plant hormones that, in addition to their endogenous signalling function, are exuded into the rhizosphere acting as a signal to stimulate hyphal branching of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and germination of root parasitic plant seeds. Considering the importance of the strigolactones and their biosynthetic origin (from carotenoids), we investigated the relationship with the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA).
Strigolactone production and ABA content in the presence of specific inhibitors of oxidative carotenoid cleavage enzymes and in several tomato ABA-deficient mutants were analysed by LC-MS/MS. In addition, the expression of two genes involved in strigolactone biosynthesis was studied.

The carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase (CCD) inhibitor D2 reduced strigolactone but not ABA content of roots. However, in abamineSG-treated plants, an inhibitor of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED), and the ABA mutants notabilis, sitiens and flacca, ABA and strigolactones were greatly reduced. The reduction in strigolactone production correlated with the downregulation of LeCCD7 and LeCCD8 genes in all three mutants.

The results show a correlation between ABA levels and strigolactone production, and suggest a role for ABA in the regulation of strigolactone biosynthesis
