    Locating the Source of Diffusion in Large-Scale Networks

    How can we localize the source of diffusion in a complex network? Due to the tremendous size of many real networks--such as the Internet or the human social graph--it is usually infeasible to observe the state of all nodes in a network. We show that it is fundamentally possible to estimate the location of the source from measurements collected by sparsely-placed observers. We present a strategy that is optimal for arbitrary trees, achieving maximum probability of correct localization. We describe efficient implementations with complexity O(N^{\alpha}), where \alpha=1 for arbitrary trees, and \alpha=3 for arbitrary graphs. In the context of several case studies, we determine how localization accuracy is affected by various system parameters, including the structure of the network, the density of observers, and the number of observed cascades.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters.     Concept for a Time-of-Flight Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument at the European Spallation Source

    A new Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument is proposed for the European Spallation Source. The pulsed source requires a time-of-flight analysis of the gathered neutrons at the detector. The optimal instrument length is found to be rather large, which allows for a polarizer and a versatile collimation. The polarizer allows for studying magnetic samples and incoherent background subtraction. The wide collimation will host VSANS and SESANS options that increase the resolution of the instrument towards um and tens of um, respectively. Two 1m2 area detectors will cover a large solid angle simultaneously. The expected gains for this new instrument will lie in the range between 20 and 36, depending on the assessment criteria, when compared to up-to-date reactor based instruments. This will open new perspectives for fast kinetics, weakly scattering samples, and multi-dimensional contrast variation studies.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure

    Diel Variation in the Vertical Distribution of Deep-Water Scattering Layers in the Gulf of Mexico

    Sound scattering layers (SSLs) are important components of oceanic ecosystems with ubiquitous distribution throughout the world\u27s oceans. This vertical movement is an important mechanism for exchanging organic matter from the surface to the deep ocean, as many of the organisms comprising SSLs serve as prey resources for linking the lower trophic levels to larger predators. Variations in abundance and taxonomic composition of mesopelagic organisms were quantified using repeated discrete net sampling and acoustics over a 30-h survey, performed during 26–27 June 2011 at single site (27°28’51”N and 88°27’54”W) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We acoustically classified the mesopelagic SSL into four broad taxonomic categories, crustacean and small non-swimbladdered fish (CSNSBF), large non-swimbladdered fish (LNSBF), swimbladdered fish (SBF) and unclassified and we quantified the abundance of mesopelagic organisms over three discrete depth intervals; epipelagic (0–200 m); upper mesopelagic (200–600 m) and lower mesopelagic (600–1000 m). Irrespective of the acoustic categories at dusk part of the acoustic energy redistributed from the mesopelagic into the upper epipelagic (shallower than 100 m) remaining however below the thermocline depth. At night higher variability in species composition was observed between 100 and 200 m suggested that a redistribution of organisms may also occur within the upper portion of the water column. Along the upper mesopelagic backscatter spectra from CSNSBF migrated between 400 and 460 m while spectra from the other categories moved to shallower depths (300 and 350 m), resulting in habitat separation from CSNSBF. Relatively small vertical changes in both acoustic backscatter and center of mass metrics of the deep mesopelagic were observed for CNSBF and LNSBF suggesting that these animals may be tightly connected to deeper (below 1000 m) mesopelagic habitats, and do not routinely migrate into the epipelagic

    Semantic Web Services for Multi-Agent Systems Interoperability

    Agent-based technologies are often used including existing web services. The outputs of some services are also frequently used as inputs for other services, including other MAS. However, while agent-based technologies can be used to provide services, these are not described using the same semantic web technologies web services use, which makes it difficult to discover, invoke and compose them with web services seamlessly. In this paper, we analyse different agent-based technologies and how these can be described using extensions to OWL-S.     On the statistics of superlocalized states in self-affine disordered potentials

    We investigate the statistics of eigenstates in a weak self-affine disordered potential in one dimension, whose Gaussian fluctuations grow with distance with a positive Hurst exponent HH. Typical eigenstates are superlocalized on samples much larger than a well-defined crossover length, which diverges in the weak-disorder regime. We present a parallel analytical investigation of the statistics of these superlocalized states in the discrete and the continuum formalisms. For the discrete tight-binding model, the effective localization length decays logarithmically with the sample size, and the logarithm of the transmission is marginally self-averaging. For the continuum Schr\"odinger equation, the superlocalization phenomenon has more drastic effects. The effective localization length decays as a power of the sample length, and the logarithm of the transmission is fully non-self-averaging.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

    Las ciudades de América Latina han demostrado un notable interés por la promoción del uso de la bicicleta a través de acciones como el desarrollo de sistemas de bicicletas públicas, inversión en infraestructura exclusiva, implementación de ciclovías recreativas y campañas de promoción, entre otras. Para el aprovechamiento del rol potencial de la movilidad urbana como factor de inclusión e integración, las acciones de promoción de la bicicleta requieren de consideraciones de equidad, entendida como la ausencia de desigualdades sistemáticas en materia de movilidad; accesibilidad, definida como las condiciones para acceder y aprovechar oportunidades esenciales para una vida plena; e inclusión social, entendida como la participación de todos los miembros de la sociedad en la vida económica, social y cultural de las ciudades. Esta publicación se desarrolla con este propósito, e incorpora definiciones claras y precisas de los conceptos de acceso, inclusión y equidad, un diagnóstico de los principales retos y oportunidades en el contexto latinoamericano para la ciclo-equidad y la inclusión social en el uso de la bicicleta, y la identificación de acciones prioritarias en el corto, mediano y largo plazo a partir de experiencias internacionales, así como indicadores específicos para su seguimiento en el tiempo

    Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilms Underlying Catheter-Related Bloodstream Coinfection by Enterobacter cloacae Complex and Candida parapsilosis

    Biofilm-associated infections are a public health concern especially in the context of healthcare-associated infections such as catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). We evaluated the biofilm formation and antimicrobials resistance (AMR) of Enterobacter cloacae complex and Candida parapsilosis co-isolated from a CRBSI patient. Antimicrobial susceptibility of central venous catheters (CVCs) and hemoculture (HC) isolates was evaluated, including whole genome sequencing (WGS) resistome analysis and evaluation of gene expression to obtain insight into their AMR determinants. Crystal violet assay was used to assess dual biofilm biomass and microscopy was used to elucidate a microorganism’s distribution within biofilms assembled on different materials. Bacteria were multidrug-resistant including resistance to colistin and beta-lactams, likely linked to the mcr-9-like phosphoethanolamine transferase and to an ACT family cephalosporin-hydrolyzing class C beta-lactamase, respectively. The R398I and Y132F mutations in the ERG11 gene and its differential expression might account for C. parapsilosis resistance to fluconazole. The phenotype of dual biofilms assembled on glass, polystyrene and polyurethane depends on the material and how biofilms were initiated by one or both pathogens. Biofilms assembled on polyurethane were denser and richer in the extracellular polymeric matrix, and microorganisms were differently distributed on the inner/outer surface of the CVC.publishedVersio

    Six-month outcomes from a randomized trial augmenting serotonin reuptake inhibitors with exposure and response prevention or risperidone in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder

    OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes after 6-month maintenance treatment of adults diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) based on DSM-IV criteria who responded to acute treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) augmented by exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) or risperidone. METHOD: A randomized trial was conducted at 2 academic sites from January 2007 through December 2012. In the acute phase, 100 patients on therapeutic SRI dose with at least moderate OCD severity were randomized to 8 weeks of EX/RP, risperidone, or pill placebo. Responders entered the 6-month maintenance phase, continuing the augmentation strategy they received acutely (n = 30 EX/RP, n = 8 risperidone). Independent evaluations were conducted every month. The main outcome was the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). RESULTS: Intent-to-treat analyses indicated that, after 6-month maintenance treatment, EX/RP yielded OCD outcomes that were superior to risperidone (Y-BOCS = 10.95 vs 18.70; t40 = 2.76, P = .009); more patients randomized to EX/RP met response criteria (Y-BOCS decrease \u3e/= 25%: 70% vs 20%; P \u3c .001) and achieved minimal symptoms (Y-BOC

    Multiplex Target Enrichment Using DNA Indexing for Ultra-High Throughput SNP Detection

    Screening large numbers of target regions in multiple DNA samples for sequence variation is an important application of next-generation sequencing but an efficient method to enrich the samples in parallel has yet to be reported. We describe an advanced method that combines DNA samples using indexes or barcodes prior to target enrichment to facilitate this type of experiment. Sequencing libraries for multiple individual DNA samples, each incorporating a unique 6-bp index, are combined in equal quantities, enriched using a single in-solution target enrichment assay and sequenced in a single reaction. Sequence reads are parsed based on the index, allowing sequence analysis of individual samples. We show that the use of indexed samples does not impact on the efficiency of the enrichment reaction. For three- and nine-indexed HapMap DNA samples, the method was found to be highly accurate for SNP identification. Even with sequence coverage as low as 8x, 99% of sequence SNP calls were concordant with known genotypes. Within a single experiment, this method can sequence the exonic regions of hundreds of genes in tens of samples for sequence and structural variation using as little as 1 μg of input DNA per sample
