Second-chance punitivism and the contractual governance of crime and incivility: New Labour, old Hobbes

The growing application of mechanisms of contractual governance to behaviour that breaches social norms, rather than the criminal law, appears to represent an ethopolitical concern with delinquent self-reform through the activation of technologies of the self. In fact, there is little empirical evidence that the contractual governance of incivility leads to such self-reform. Beneath the ideology of contractual agreement to observe social norms lies what this paper calls a ‘second-chance punitivism’ which operates to crystallise behavioural elements of the Hobbesian social contract, after breach, into a more specific form. The responsibilising and individualising properties of this form of contractual governance set the moral-ideological platform for a retributive punitivism, when the rational agents it creates fail to live up to their image, and are taken to have wasted their ‘second chance’

Introduction: democratisation and punishment

Die experimentelle Aufgabe dieser Arbeit bestand in der Bestimmung der Energieabhängigkeit der Schädigungsrate für die MetalleAluminium, Kupfer und Gold im Energiebereich von 1,o bis 3, 3 Mev. Im Verlauf der Arbeit ergab sich, daß für eine einwandfreie Bestimmung der "idealen 11 Schädigungsrate $\Delta \varphi_{io}$, der Schädigungsrate bei verschwindender Defektkonzentration $\Delta \varphi$ und ohne Auftreten von Störeinflüssen, für die betreffende Probe auch die Abhängigkeit der Schädigungsrate von der Defektkonzentration $\Delta \varphi$ bei einer Energie zu untersuchen ist. Diese Anforderung konnte im Rahmen einer anderen Aufgabenstellung an denselben Proben erledigt werden. Dabei ergab sich, daß die Schädigungsrate von Gold mit zunehmender Defektkonzentration zunächst nichtlinear abfällt und erst ab einer Defektkonzentration $\Delta \varphi = 5 x 10^{-8} \Omega cm$ bei Metallen im allgemeinen beobachteten, nahezu linearen Abfall mit zunehmender Defektkonzentration annimmt. Es wurde festgestellt, daß dieser Effekt von der Bestrahlungstemperatur abhängt. Weitere Untersuchungen bei Bestrahlungstemperaturen T<4,3°K waren jedoch mit der vorhandenen Apparatur nicht durchführbar. Die an Gold bestimmten Schädigungsraten können aufgrund dieses Effektes nicht ausgewertet werden. Außerdem muß angenommen werden, daß aufgrund dieses Effektes alle in der Literatur mitgeteilten Schädigungsraten mit einer merklichen Unsicherheit behaftet sind. Für die minimale Schwellenenergie $E_{d,min}$ wurde etwa 33 eV erhalten. Dieser Wert ist in guter Übereinstimmung mit dem von Bauer und Sosin$^{9)}$ angegebenen Wert von etwa 35 eV. Aus den eigenen Messungen an Aluminium und Kupfer und den Messungen anderer Autoren bei Energien unterhalb 1,o MeV wurde einegeglättete Kurve für die Energieabhängigkeit der Schadigungsrate von der minimalen Schwellenenergie E$_{d,min}$ bis zu der bei dergrößten Elektronenenergie maximal übertragbaren Enerrrie $E^{(N)}_{max}$ erhalten. Diese geglälttete Kurve wurde dann der Berechnung der Verlagerungsfunktion $\varphi _{F}P(E)n(E)$ zuerunde gelegt. Der Verlauf des differentiellen Wirkungsquerschnittes für Energieübertragung bei der Streuung eines Elektrons an einem Gitteratom bedingt, daß Energieübertragungen nahe $E^{(N)}_{max}$ sehr selten vorkommen. Energieübertragungen von der Größe der minimalen Schwellenenergie $E_{d,min}$ dagegen häufig. Das heißt, daß von Energien nahe $E^{(N)}_{max}$ nur ein kleiner Beitrag zu gemessenen Schädigungsraten $\Delta \varphi$ geleistet wird [...

Thrombin-induced events in non-platelet cells are mediated by the unique proteolytic mechanism established for the cloned platelet thrombin receptor.

We recently isolated a cDNA clone encoding a functional platelet thrombin receptor that defined a unique mechanism of receptor activation. Thrombin cleaves its receptor's extracellular amino terminal extension, unmasking a new amino terminus that functions as a tethered peptide ligand and activates the receptor. A novel peptide mimicking this new amino terminus was a full agonist for platelet secretion and aggregation, suggesting that this unusual mechanism accounts for platelet activation by thrombin. Does this mechanism also mediate thrombin's assorted actions on non-platelet cells? We now report that the novel thrombin receptor agonist peptide reproduces thrombin-induced events (specifically, phosphoinositide hydrolysis and mitogenesis) in CCL-39 hamster lung fibroblasts, a naturally thrombin-responsive cell line. Moreover, these thrombin-induced events could be recapitulated in CV-1 cells, normally poorly responsive to thrombin, after transfection with human platelet thrombin receptor cDNA. Our data show that important thrombin-induced cellular events are mediated by the same unusual mechanism of receptor activation in both platelets and fibroblasts, very likely via the same or very similar receptors

Heart-Kidney Interaction: Epidemiology of Cardiorenal Syndromes

Cardiac and kidney diseases are common, increasingly encountered, and often coexist. Recently, the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) Working Group convened a consensus conference to develop a classification scheme for the CRS and for five discrete subtypes. These CRS subtypes likely share pathophysiologic mechanisms, however, also have distinguishing clinical features, in terms of precipitating events, risk identification, natural history, and outcomes. Knowledge of the epidemiology of heart-kidney interaction stratified by the proposed CRS subtypes is increasingly important for understanding the overall burden of disease for each CRS subtype, along with associated morbidity, mortality, and health resource utilization. Likewise, an understanding of the epidemiology of CRS is necessary for characterizing whether there exists important knowledge gaps and to aid in the design of clinical studies. This paper will provide a summary of the epidemiology of the cardiorenal syndrome and its subtypes

Diseño y Evaluación de un programa informático para la educación musical de maestros no especialistas. El caso de EMOLAB.

Este trabajo expone el diseño, desarrollo y evaluación de un software como apoyo docente en una materia de formación musical básica para futuros maestros generalistas. La evaluación del programa fue realizada por estudiantes de primer año del Grado de Maestro en Educación Primaria. Cumplimentaron un cuestionario que recogió sus opiniones (versatilidad, eficacia, facilidad de uso, calidad del entorno gráfico, adecuación, interés, facilitación del aprendizaje, feedback, funcionalidad) y percepciones sobre aspectos más generales (control, orientación, afectividad, consulta, verificación, seguimiento). Los resultados sugieren que el alumnado percibe EMOLab como herramienta de gran ayuda en el desarrollo de sus habilidades musicales
