X-ray Lighthouses of the High-Redshift Universe. II. Further Snapshot Observations of the Most Luminous z>4 Quasars with Chandra
We report on Chandra observations of a sample of 11 optically luminous
(Mb<-28.5) quasars at z=3.96-4.55 selected from the Palomar Digital Sky Survey
and the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility Survey. These are among the most
luminous z>4 quasars known and hence represent ideal witnesses of the end of
the "dark age ''. Nine quasars are detected by Chandra, with ~2-57 counts in
the observed 0.5-8 keV band. These detections increase the number of X-ray
detected AGN at z>4 to ~90; overall, Chandra has detected ~85% of the
high-redshift quasars observed with snapshot (few kilosecond) observations. PSS
1506+5220, one of the two X-ray undetected quasars, displays a number of
notable features in its rest-frame ultraviolet spectrum, the most prominent
being broad, deep SiIV and CIV absorption lines. The average optical-to-X-ray
spectral index for the present sample (=-1.88+/-0.05) is steeper than
that typically found for z>4 quasars but consistent with the expected value
from the known dependence of this spectral index on quasar luminosity.
We present joint X-ray spectral fitting for a sample of 48 radio-quiet
quasars in the redshift range 3.99-6.28 for which Chandra observations are
available. The X-ray spectrum (~870 counts) is well parameterized by a power
law with Gamma=1.93+0.10/-0.09 in the rest-frame ~2-40 keV band, and a tight
upper limit of N_H~5x10^21 cm^-2 is obtained on any average intrinsic X-ray
absorption. There is no indication of any significant evolution in the X-ray
properties of quasars between redshifts zero and six, suggesting that the
physical processes of accretion onto massive black holes have not changed over

Strain control of superlattice implies weak charge-lattice coupling in LaCaMnO
We have recently argued that manganites do not possess stripes of charge
order, implying that the electron-lattice coupling is weak [Phys Rev Lett
\textbf{94} (2005) 097202]. Here we independently argue the same conclusion
based on transmission electron microscopy measurements of a nanopatterned
epitaxial film of LaCaMnO. In strain relaxed regions, the
superlattice period is modified by 2-3% with respect to the parent lattice,

Accurate Liability Estimation Improves Power in Ascertained Case Control Studies
Linear mixed models (LMMs) have emerged as the method of choice for
confounded genome-wide association studies. However, the performance of LMMs in
non-randomly ascertained case-control studies deteriorates with increasing
sample size. We propose a framework called LEAP (Liability Estimator As a
Phenotype, https://github.com/omerwe/LEAP) that tests for association with
estimated latent values corresponding to severity of phenotype, and demonstrate
that this can lead to a substantial power increase
Dynamic Gaussian graphical models for modelling genomic networks
After sequencing the entire DNA for various organisms, the challenge has become understanding the functional interrelatedness of the genome. Only by understanding the pathways for various complex diseases can we begin to make sense of any type of treatment. Unfortu- nately, decyphering the genomic network structure is an enormous task. Even with a small number of genes the number of possible networks is very large. This problem becomes even more difficult, when we consider dynamical networks. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dy- namic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood of structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The model is defined on the basis of partial correlations, which results in a specific class precision matrices. A priori L1 penalized maximum likelihood estimation in this class is extremely difficult, because of the above mentioned constraints, the computational complexity of the L1 constraint on the side of the usual positive-definite constraint. The implementation is non-trivial, but we show that the computation can be done effectively by taking advan- tage of an efficient maximum determinant algorithm developed in convex optimization
Self-calibrating Tomography for Angular Schmidt Modes in Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion
We report an experimental self-calibrating tomography scheme for entanglement
characterization in high-dimensional quantum systems using Schmidt
decomposition techniques. The self-tomography technique based on maximal
likelihood estimation was developed for characterizing non-ideal measurements
in Schmidt basis allowing us to infer both Schmidt eigenvalues and detecting

Retinal blood vessels extraction using probabilistic modelling

In this review, we present an automated method to segment blood vessels of fundus retinal image. The proposed method could be used to support a non-intrusive diagnosis in modern ophthalmology for early detection of retinal diseases, treatment evaluation or clinical study. This study combines the bias correction and an adaptive histogram equalisation to enhance the appearance of the blood vessels. Then the blood vessels are extracted using probabilistic modelling that is optimised by the expectation maximisation algorithm. The method is evaluated on fundus retinal images of STARE and DRIVE datasets. The experimental results are compared with some recently published methods of retinal blood vessels segmentation. Host Galaxy Evolution in Radio-Loud AGN
We investigate the luminosity evolution of the host galaxies of radio-loud
AGN through Hubble Space Telescope imaging of 72 BL Lac objects, including new
STIS imaging of nine z > 0.6 BL Lacs. With their intrinsically low accretion
rates and their strongly beamed jets, BL Lacs provide a unique opportunity to
probe host galaxy evolution independent of the biases and ambiguities implicit
in quasar studies. We find that the host galaxies of BL Lacs evolve strongly,
consistent with passive evolution from a period of active star formation in the
range 0.5 <~ z <~ 2.5, and inconsistent with either passive evolution from a
high formation redshift or a non-evolving population. This evolution is broadly
consistent with that observed in the hosts of other radio-loud AGN, and
inconsistent with the flatter luminosity evolution of quiescent early types and
radio-quiet hosts. This indicates that active star formation, and hence galaxy
interactions, are associated with the formation for radio-loud AGN, and that
these host galaxies preferentially accrete less material after their formation
epoch than galaxies without powerful radio jets. We discuss possible
explanations for the link between merger history and the incidence of a radio

Deformation of the N=Z nucleus 76Sr using beta-decay studies
A novel method of deducing the deformation of the N=Z nucleus 76Sr is
presented. It is based on the comparison of the experimental Gamow-Teller
strength distribution B(GT) from its beta decay with the results of QRPA
calculations. This method confirms previous indications of the strong prolate
deformation of this nucleus in a totally independent way. The measurement has
been carried out with a large Total Absorption gamma Spectrometer, "Lucrecia",
newly installed at CERN-ISOLDE.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev. Letter
Maxwell-like Lagrangians for higher spins
We show how implementing invariance under divergence-free gauge
transformations leads to a remarkably simple Lagrangian description of massless
bosons of any spin. Our construction covers both flat and (A)dS backgrounds and
extends to tensors of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type. Irreducible and traceless
fields produce single-particle actions, while whenever trace constraints can be
dispensed with the resulting Lagrangians display the same reducible,
multi-particle spectra as those emerging from the tensionless limit of free
open-string field theory. For all explored options the corresponding kinetic
operators take essentially the same form as in the spin-one, Maxwell case.Comment: 77 pages, revised version. Erroneous interpretation and proof of the
gauge-fixing procedure for mixed-symmetry fields corrected. As a consequence,
the mixed-symmetry, one-particle Lagrangians are to be complemented with
