Formulation of the twisted-lightâmatter interaction at the phase singularity: The twisted-light gauge
Twisted light is light carrying orbital angular momentum. The profile of such a beam is a ring-like structure with a node at the beam axis, where a phase singularity exists. Due to the strong spatial inhomogeneity the mathematical description of twisted-lightâmatter interaction is non-trivial, in particular close to the phase singularity, where the commonly used dipole-moment approximation cannot be applied. In this paper we show that, if the handedness of circular polarization and the orbital angular momentum of the twisted-light beam have the same sign, a Hamiltonian similar to the dipole-moment approximation can be derived. However, if the signs differ, in general the magnetic parts of the light beam become of significant importance and an interaction Hamiltonian which only accounts for electric fields is inappropriate. We discuss the consequences of these findings for twisted-light excitation of a semiconductor nanostructures, e.g., a quantum dot, placed at the phase singularity.Fil: Quinteiro, Guillermo Federico. Net solar generation potential from urban rooftops in Los Angeles
Rooftops provide accessible locations for solar energy installations. While rooftop solar arrays can offset in-building electricity needs, they may also stress electric grid operations. Here we present an analysis of net electricity generation potential from distributed rooftop solar in Los Angeles. We integrate spatial and temporal data for property-level electricity demands, rooftop solar generation potential, and grid capacity constraints to estimate the potential for solar to meet on-site demands and supply net exports to the electric grid. In the study area with 1.2 million parcels, rooftop solar could meet 7200 Gigawatt Hours (GWh) of on-site building demands (~29% of demand). Overall potential net generation is negative, meaning buildings use more electricity than they can produce. Yet, cumulative net export potential from solar to grid circuits is 16,400 GWh. Current policies that regulate solar array interconnection to the grid result in unutilized solar power output of 1700 MW. Lower-income and at-risk communities in LA have greater potential for exporting net solar generation to the grid. This potential should be recognized through investments and policy innovations. The method demonstrates the need for considering time-dependent calculations of net solar potential and offers a template for distributed renewable energy planning in cities
Sub-eV scalar dark matter through the super-renormalizable Higgs portal
The Higgs portal of the Standard Model provides the opportunity for coupling
to a very light scalar field via the super-renormalizable operator
. This allows for the existence of a very light scalar dark
matter that has coherent interaction with the Standard Model particles and yet
has its mass protected against radiative corrections. We analyze ensuing
constraints from the fifth-force measurements, along with the cosmological
requirements. We find that the detectable level of the fifth-force can be
achieved in models with low inflationary scales, and certain amount of
fine-tuning in the initial deviation of from its minimum.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. References added in the revised version
Coherent Pion Production by Neutrinos
In this talk I review the main features of the coherent/diffractive pion
production by neutrinos on nuclei. The method is based on PCAC and relates the
reaction to elastic pion-nucleus scattering. Estimates for the
expected rates and distributions in neutrino reactions are presented with the
help of hadronic data. The absolute rates are significantly smaller than the
older estimates which brings theory in agreement with the neutral current
measurements and the bounds in charged current reactions.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop

Orientation-dependent Casimir force arising from highly anisotropic crystals: application to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta
We calculate the Casimir interaction between parallel planar crystals of Au
and the anisotropic cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (BSCCO), with
BSCCO's optical axis either parallel or perpendicular to the crystal surface,
using suitable generalizations of the Lifshitz theory. We find that the strong
anisotropy of the BSCCO permittivity gives rise to a difference in the Casimir
force between the two orientations of the optical axis, which depends on
distance and is of order 10-20% at the experimentally accessible separations 10
to 5000 nm.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review
Large-Scale Magnetic Fields, Dark Energy and QCD
Cosmological magnetic fields are being observed with ever increasing
correlation lengths, possibly reaching the size of superclusters, therefore
disfavouring the conventional picture of generation through primordial seeds
later amplified by galaxy-bound dynamo mechanisms. In this paper we put forward
a fundamentally different approach that links such large-scale magnetic fields
to the cosmological vacuum energy. In our scenario the dark energy is due to
the Veneziano ghost (which solves the problem in QCD). The Veneziano
ghost couples through the triangle anomaly to the electromagnetic field with a
constant which is unambiguously fixed in the standard model. While this
interaction does not produce any physical effects in Minkowski space, it
triggers the generation of a magnetic field in an expanding universe at every
epoch. The induced energy of the magnetic field is thus proportional to
cosmological vacuum energy: , hence acting as a source for the magnetic energy
. The corresponding numerical estimate leads to a magnitude in the
nG range. There are two unique and distinctive predictions of our proposal: an
uninterrupted active generation of Hubble size correlated magnetic fields
throughout the evolution of the universe; the presence of parity violation on
the enormous scales , which apparently has been already observed in CMB.
These predictions are entirely rooted into the standard model of particle
physics.Comment: jhep style, 22 pages, v2 with updated estimates and extended

Analysis of Round Off Errors with Reversibility Test as a Dynamical Indicator
We compare the divergence of orbits and the reversibility error for discrete
time dynamical systems. These two quantities are used to explore the behavior
of the global error induced by round off in the computation of orbits. The
similarity of results found for any system we have analysed suggests the use of
the reversibility error, whose computation is straightforward since it does not
require the knowledge of the exact orbit, as a dynamical indicator. The
statistics of fluctuations induced by round off for an ensemble of initial
conditions has been compared with the results obtained in the case of random
perturbations. Significant differences are observed in the case of regular
orbits due to the correlations of round off error, whereas the results obtained
for the chaotic case are nearly the same. Both the reversibility error and the
orbit divergence computed for the same number of iterations on the whole phase
space provide an insight on the local dynamical properties with a detail
comparable with other dynamical indicators based on variational methods such as
the finite time maximum Lyapunov characteristic exponent, the mean exponential
growth factor of nearby orbits and the smaller alignment index. For 2D
symplectic maps the differentiation between regular and chaotic regions is well
full-filled. For 4D symplectic maps the structure of the resonance web as well
as the nearby weakly chaotic regions are accurately described.Comment: International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 201
Computation and visualization of Casimir forces in arbitrary geometries: non-monotonic lateral forces and failure of proximity-force approximations
We present a method of computing Casimir forces for arbitrary geometries,
with any desired accuracy, that can directly exploit the efficiency of standard
numerical-electromagnetism techniques. Using the simplest possible
finite-difference implementation of this approach, we obtain both agreement
with past results for cylinder-plate geometries, and also present results for
new geometries. In particular, we examine a piston-like problem involving two
dielectric and metallic squares sliding between two metallic walls, in two and
three dimensions, respectively, and demonstrate non-additive and non-monotonic
changes in the force due to these lateral walls.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. (Expected

Precision measurement of the Casimir-Lifshitz force in a fluid
The Casimir force, which results from the confinement of the quantum
mechanical zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields, has received
significant attention in recent years for its effect on micro- and nano-scale
mechanical systems. With few exceptions, experimental observations have been
limited to conductive bodies interacting separated by vacuum or air. However,
interesting phenomena including repulsive forces are expected to exist in
certain circumstances between metals and dielectrics when the intervening
medium is not vacuum. In order to better understand the effect of the Casimir
force in such situations and to test the robustness of the generalized
Casimir-Lifshitz theory, we have performed the first precision measurements of
the Casimir force between two metals immersed in a fluid. For this situation,
the measured force is attractive and is approximately 80% smaller than the
force predicted by Casimir for ideal metals in vacuum. We present experimental
results and find them to be consistent with Lifshitz's theory.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. (version before final publication
