    In this thesis an attempt has been made to show what actuated Melbourne the politician and to consider how far he may have been under-estimated, even, perhaps, under-valued. It would be presumptuous for the writer to claim either to have thoroughly understood a historical figure, or to be able to enhance greatly that person's political stature. But fairly common sense can now be made of Melbourne's career; and in the process he seems to emerge as a major, if not a dominant force in the 1830's. Almost from the start of his political life Melbourne was profoundly preoccupied with the great question of the distribution of political power in the country. From 1815 to 1830 he was against wanton change but he was also sensitive to the ultimate need for change. These thoughtful, flexible attitudes, combined with his strength of character, enabled him to play a considerable part in the passage of the Reform Bill. But thereafter he suffered from an irremovable sense of guilt at having assisted in the destruction of the old system. His determination to control the pace of future change inspired him for the rest of the decade. Continued in thesis ..

    The application of terrain classification techniques to visible near infra-red and thermal infra-red imagery

    The research presented in this thesis was sponsored by the Ministry of Technology and carried out in the Physics Department of Bedford College, University of London, under the supervision of Dr. E.S. Owen Jones. The work was concerned with the 'Physics' aspect of Remote Sensing of the terrain whilst parallel, co-ordinated research into the ground-related aspects of the project were investigated by a Research Student in the Geography Department and supervised by Professor M.M. Cole. Photographic emulsions were used to sense the visible and near infra-red radiation reflected by the terrain and an infra-red line-scanner detected the longer wave infra-red (3.5--5.5microm) radiation emitted from the ground. The research studied two particular aspects in detail; Data Acquisition and Data Analysis. The investigations into data acquisition required an examination into the factors affecting the various types of radiation as well as equipment calibration procedures. The analysis of the data obtained with cameras was treated quantitatively whilst the imagery derived from the line-scanner was of degraded quality and only visual interpretation techniques were applied. The research carried out has made contributions in two areas. Firstly it has provided greater understanding of the manner in which remote sensing exercises should be undertaken in order to reduce experimental errors. Secondly, the difficulties associated with the analysis of remotely sensed data were studied and several useful unsupervised cluster analysis strategies have been proposed and investigated.<p

    The UK fresh produce industry is both complex and diverse. It can be characterised as a highly fragmented industry but nevertheless with some significant players. There is an overriding trend towards supply chain concentration in the industry and high levels of competition, with multiple retailers seeking to deal with a reduced number of suppliers. For many years the industry has experienced problems recruiting the number and quality of staff required, with vacancies available throughout the supply chain; this is possibly related to the poor image the industry holds, particularly among graduates. This situation provided the impetus for the development of a work-based postgraduate qualification developed by a partnership of Harper Adams University College and Management Development Services (MDS Ltd), a consortium of UK-based fresh produce companies

The diseases that involve skin and mind constitute the field of psychodermatology and require that specialists in dermatology, psychiatry and psychology together and integrated take part in it, since skin, nervous system and mind are simultaneously affected.     Parent perceptions of the quality of life of pet dogs living with neuro-typically developing and neuro-atypically developing children: an exploratory study

    There is growing scientific and societal recognition of the role that pet dogs can play in healthy development of children; both those who are neuro-typically developing and those who live with a neuro-developmental disorder, such as autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, little attention has been paid to how living with children positively and negatively affects quality of life of a pet dog. In this exploratory study we conducted semi-structured interviews with parents of neuro-typically developing children (n = 18) and those with a neuro-developmental disorder (n = 18) who owned a pet dog, until no new factors were identified. Living with children brought potentially positive benefits to the dog’s life including: imposition of a routine, participation in recreational activities and the development of a strong bond between the child and the dog. The importance of maintaining a routine was particularly prevalent in families with children with neuro-developmental disorders. Potential negative factors included having to cope with child meltdowns and tantrums, over stimulation from child visitors, harsh contact and rough and tumble play with the child. The regularity and intensity of meltdowns and tantrums was particularly evident in responses from parents with children with a neuro-developmental disorder. However, child visitors and rough play and contact were mentioned similarly across the groups. Protective factors included having a safe haven for the dog to escape to, parent’s awareness of stress signs and child education in dog-interaction. Parents were also asked to complete a stress response scale to provide an initial quantitative comparison of stress responses between dogs living with the two family-types. Parents with neuro-typically developing children more frequently observed their dog rapidly running away from a situation and less frequently observed their dog widening their eyes, than parents with children with a neuro-developmental disorder. We propose the development of a stress audit based on the findings reported here, to prevent potential dangerous situations, which may lead to dog bites and dog relinquishment and allow owners to maximise the benefits of dog ownership

    Harnessing learning biases is essential for applying social learning in conservation

    Social learning can influence how animals respond to anthropogenic changes in the environment, determining whether animals survive novel threats and exploit novel resources or produce maladaptive behaviour and contribute to human-wildlife conflict. Predicting where social learning will occur and manipulating its use are, therefore, important in conservation, but doing so is not straightforward. Learning is an inherently biased process that has been shaped by natural selection to prioritize important information and facilitate its efficient uptake. In this regard, social learning is no different from other learning processes because it too is shaped by perceptual filters, attentional biases and learning constraints that can differ between habitats, species, individuals and contexts. The biases that constrain social learning are not understood well enough to accurately predict whether or not social learning will occur in many situations, which limits the effective use of social learning in conservation practice. Nevertheless, we argue that by tapping into the biases that guide the social transmission of information, the conservation applications of social learning could be improved. We explore the conservation areas where social learning is highly relevant and link them to biases in the cues and contexts that shape social information use. The resulting synthesis highlights many promising areas for collaboration between the fields and stresses the importance of systematic reviews of the evidence surrounding social learning practices.BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship (BB/H021817/1

    Exploring the role of curriculum materials in teacher professional development

    Curriculum materials (schemes of work, lesson plans, etc.) play a complex and pivotal role in school and teacher practices. The adaptation and development of curriculum materials often constitute part of teacher professional development (PD) activities. However, compared with research examining the relationship between PD and teacher professional change, the role of curriculum materials in professional learning remains under-researched and under-theorised. We address this gap by applying a multi-perspectival approach to data from a PD programme in which teachers were supported to develop curriculum materials. We use an interconnected model to analyse the role of curriculum materials in catalysing change in individual teachers’ practice. Our use of Boundary Theory proposes that curriculum material adoption is mediated by the solidity of boundaries between school practice and research findings, and Actor-Network Theory perspectives examine the assemblage of networked relations within and beyond schools that are entangled in curriculum materials. We highlight how combining linear and non-linear perspectives may contribute to improved understanding of the complexity of supporting teachers’ learning and use our analyses to outline implications of using curriculum materials in teacher professional development

    Evidence for Emulation in Chimpanzees in Social Settings Using the Floating Peanut Task

    The authors have no support or funding to report.Background: It is still unclear which observational learning mechanisms underlie the transmission of difficult problem-solving skills in chimpanzees. In particular, two different mechanisms have been proposed: imitation and emulation. Previous studies have largely failed to control for social factors when these mechanisms were targeted. Methods: In an attempt to resolve the existing discrepancies, we adopted the 'floating peanut task', in which subjects need to spit water into a tube until it is sufficiently full for floating peanuts to be grasped. In a previous study only a few chimpanzees were able to invent the necessary solution (and they either did so in their first trials or never). Here we compared success levels in baseline tests with two experimental conditions that followed: 1) A full model condition to test whether social demonstrations would be effective, and 2) A social emulation control condition, in which a human experimenter poured water from a bottle into the tube, to test whether results information alone (present in both experimental conditions) would also induce successes. Crucially, we controlled for social factors in both experimental conditions. Both types of demonstrations significantly increased successful spitting, with no differences between demonstration types. We also found that younger subjects were more likely to succeed than older ones. Our analysis showed that mere order effects could not explain our results. Conclusion: The full demonstration condition (which potentially offers additional information to observers, in the form of actions), induced no more successes than the emulation condition. Hence, emulation learning could explain the success in both conditions. This finding has broad implications for the interpretation of chimpanzee traditions, for which emulation learning may perhaps suffice.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Three pillars of sustainability: in search of conceptual origins

    The three-pillar conception of (social, economic and environmental) sustainability, commonly represented by three intersecting circles with overall sustainability at the centre, has become ubiquitous. With a view of identifying the genesis and theoretical foundations of this conception, this paper reviews and discusses relevant historical sustainability literature. From this we find that there is no single point of origin of this three-pillar conception, but rather a gradual emergence from various critiques in the early academic literature of the economic status quo from both social and ecological perspectives on the one hand, and the quest to reconcile economic growth as a solution to social and ecological problems on the part of the United Nations on the other. The popular three circles diagram appears to have been first presented by Barbier (Environ Conserv 14:101, doi: 10.1017/s0376892900011449, 1987), albeit purposed towards developing nations with foci which differ from modern interpretations. The conceptualisation of three pillars seems to predate this, however. Nowhere have we found a theoretically rigorous description of the three pillars. This is thought to be in part due to the nature of the sustainability discourse arising from broadly different schools of thought historically. The absence of such a theoretically solid conception frustrates approaches towards a theoretically rigorous operationalisation of ‘sustainability’
