    Efficient adaptive pseudo-symplectic numerical integration techniques for Landau-Lifshitz dynamics

    Numerical time integration schemes for Landau-Lifshitz magnetization dynamics are considered. Such dynamics preserves the magnetization amplitude and, in the absence of dissipation, also implies the conservation of the free energy. This property is generally lost when time discretization is performed for the numerical solution. In this work, explicit numerical schemes based on Runge-Kutta methods are introduced. The schemes are termed pseudo-symplectic in that they are accurate to order p, but preserve magnetization amplitude and free energy to order q > p. An effective strategy for adaptive time-stepping control is discussed for schemes of this class. Numerical tests against analytical solutions for the simulation of fast precessional dynamics are performed in order to point out the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    Increased IGF-1: IGFBP-3 ratio in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

    BACKGROUND: The development of hepatocellular carcinoma in liver cirrhosis is associated with altered synthesis and secretion of several growth factors. AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the potential implication of IGF-I and its major binding protein (IGFBP-3) in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were measured in 150 healthy subjects, 40 patients with liver cirrhosis and 63 with liver cirrhosis and untreated hepatocellular carcinoma. The ratio between IGF-I and IGFBP-3 was also calculated. RESULTS: Serum IGF-I (70 ± 10 and 65 ± 7 vs. 185 ± 6.4 μg/l, P < 0.001) and IGFBP-3 levels (1225 ± 113 and 984 ± 67 vs. 3017 ± 80 μg/l, P < 0.001) were lower in patients with liver cirrhosis, without or with hepatocellular carcinoma, than in controls. Age was negatively correlated with IGF-I levels In patients with liver cirrhosis (r = -0.6; P = 0.0002) as well as in controls (r = -0.8, P < 0.0001), but not in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (r = -0.2; P = 0.2). Additionally, in patients with liver cirrhosis (r = -0.54; P = 0.0003) and more weakly in those with hepatocellular carcinoma (r = -0.24; P = 0.04) IGF-I levels were negatively correlated with liver failure measured according with Child class. Despite patients with class C hepatocellular carcinoma being older than those in the same functional class with cirrhosis (64 ± 2 vs. 57 ± 2 years, P < 0.01), they had a significantly increased IGF-I : IGFBP-3 ratio (0.18 ± 0.05 vs. 0.41 ± 0.09, P = 0.04), due mostly to increased IGF-I levels (27.1 ± 5.6 vs. 42 ± 6.2 μg/l) as IGFBP-3 levels were similar to patients with cirrhosis (734 ± 81 vs. 679 ± 83 μg/l). CONCLUSIONS: Hepatocellular carcinoma is associated with a higher IGF-I : IGFBP-3 ratio than that found in patients with liver cirrhosis and a similar degree of liver failure

    SiPM: Characterizations, modelling and VLSI front-end dedicated development

    In this work we describe the results of performance tests and measures of SiPM of several sizes (1Ă—1, 3Ă—3, 5Ă—5) delivered from MEPHI. The SiPMs have been studied both in steady and pulsed stimuli. Aging and temperature behavior are also discussed. Another test has been performed in order to obtain an electrical model of the SiPM to be used in analog simulations. Finally, a design of a pilot chip with 0.35 ÎĽm technology implementing a front-end for SiPM aimed to TOF applications with adjustable thresholds and very high dynamical range is described

    Recent results from the G(0) experiment

    We have measured parity violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at backward electron angle. These measurements have been done at two momentum transfers : Q(2) = 0.22 and 0.63 (GeV/c)(2). Together with our previous forward angle measurement [1], we can extract strange quark contributions to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, as well as nucleon axial form factor coming from the neutral weak interaction. The results indicate a strange quark magnetic contribution close to zero at these Q(2), and a possible non zero strange quark electric contribution for the high Q(2). The first Q(2) behavior measurement of the nucleon axial form factor in elastic electron scattering shows a good agreement with radiative corrections calculated at Q(2) = 0 and with a dipole form using the axial mass determined in neutrino scattering

    Measurement of the Parity-Violating Asymmetry in Inclusive Electroproduction of pi(-) near the Delta(0) Resonance

    The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive pi(-) production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasifree photoproduction off the neutron via the Delta(0) resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, this asymmetry is related to a low-energy constant d(Delta)(-) that characterizes the parity-violating gamma N Delta coupling. Zhu et al. calculated d(Delta)(-) in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from A(gamma)(-) = -5.2 to + 5.2 ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to A(gamma)(-) = -0.36 +/- 1.06 +/- 0.37 +/- 0.03 ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to V-ud/V-us. The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the N - Delta axial transition form factors using PV electron scattering

    The influence of propofol, remifentanil and lidocaine on the tone of human bronchial smooth muscle.

    Bronchoscopy is generally a safe procedure, but the induction of anaesthesia can induce bronchospasm. Consequently we investigated the influence of propofol, remifentanil and lidocaine on the tone of the human bronchial smooth muscle. Materials and methods: The influence of propofol, remifentanil and lidocaine on the contractile response of human bronchial smooth muscle to electrical field stimulation (EFS) has been evaluated. The role of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves and of inducible nitric oxide synthase has also been assessed. Furthermore, the interaction between these three dugs has been measured by Bliss Independence (BI) theory. Statistical significance (P < 0.05) was assessed by Student's t test or ANOVA. Results: Propofol (1.3 μg ml-1) and lidocaine (1 mg ml-1) reduced the baseline tone of bronchial rings (-14.45 ± 4.53% and -33.40 ± 1.07%, respectively, P < 0.05), whereas remifentanil had not such effect. Aminoguanidine prevented the relaxant effect of propofol. Propofol did not alter the bronchial contractile response to EFS following 30 min of treatment, whereas remifentanil enhanced the bronchial tension (133.83 ± 9.38%, control 101.93 ± 6.82%, P < 0.05 P < 0.05) and lidocaine completely abolished the contractility at 1 mg ml-1 (P < 0.05). The desensitization of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves normalized the hyperresponsiveness induced by remifentanil (-26.77 ± 1.68%, P < 0.05). Significant BI antagonism (P < 0.001) was detected for propofol and lidocaine on the bronchial hyperresponsiveness induced by remifentanil. Conclusion: Propofol and remifentanil may be used safely for bronchoscopy, although remifentanil should be associated with propofol or lidocaine to prevent the potential opioid-mediated bronchospasm

    Polymorphisms in the SOCS7 gene and glucose homeostasis traits

    BACKGROUND: SOCS7 is a member of the suppressor of cytokine signaling family of proteins and is expressed in skeletal muscle and islets. SOCS7 deficient mice develop islet hyperplasia in the setting of increased insulin sensitivity and normal glucose tolerance. The objective of this study was to determine if variants in SOCS7 play a role in variation of glucose and insulin levels and the development of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). RESULTS: Five SOCS7 tagging SNPs were genotyped in diabetic and nondiabetic Old Order Amish. A case–control study was performed in T2DM (n = 145) and normal glucose tolerant (n = 358) subjects. Nominal associations were observed with T2DM and the minor alleles for rs8068600 (P = 0.01) and rs8074124 (P = 0.04); however, only rs8068600 remained significant after Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons (P = 0.01). Among nondiabetic Amish (n = 765), no significant associations with glucose or insulin traits including fasting or 2 hour glucose and insulin from the oral glucose tolerance test, insulin or glucose area under the curve, Matsuda Index or HOMA-IR were found for any of the SNPs. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, genetic variants in the SOCS7 gene do not impact variation in glucose homeostasis traits and only minimally impact risk of T2DM in the Old Order Amish. Our study was not able to address whether rare variants that potentially impact gene function might influence T2DM risk
