Multimodality Treatment for Early-Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Bridging Therapy for Liver Transplantation
Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of a multimodality approach consisting of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as bridging therapy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and to evaluate the histopathological response in explant specimens. Materials and Methods: Between April 2001 and November 2011, 36 patients with 50 HCC nodules (1.4-5.0 cm, median 2.8 cm) on the waiting list for liver transplantation were treated by TACE and RFA. The drop-out rate during the follow-up period was recorded. The local efficacy was evaluated by histopathological examination of the explanted livers. Results: During a median follow-up time of 29 (4.0-95.3) months the cumulative drop-out rate for the patients on the waiting list was 0, 2.8, 5.5, 11.0, 13.9 and 16.7% at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months, respectively. 16 patients (with 26 HCC lesions) out of 36(44.4%) were transplanted by the end of study with a median waiting list time of 13.7 (2.5-37.8) months. The histopathological examination of the explanted specimens revealed a complete necrosis in 20 of 26 HCCs (76.9%), whereas 6 (23.1%) nodules showed viable residual tumor tissue. All transplanted patients are alive at a median time of 29.9 months. Imaging correlation showed 100% specificity and 66.7% sensitivity for the depiction of residual or recurrent tumor. Conclusion: We conclude that TACE.combined with RFA could provide an effective treatment to decrease the drop-out rate from the OLT waiting list for HCC patients. Furthermore, this combination therapy results in high rates of complete tumor necrosis as evaluated in the histopathological analysis of the explanted livers. Test of candidate light distributors for the muon (g2) laser calibration system
The new muon (g-2) experiment E989 at Fermilab will be equipped with a laser
calibration system for all the 1296 channels of the calorimeters. An
integrating sphere and an alternative system based on an engineered diffuser
have been considered as possible light distributors for the experiment. We
present here a detailed comparison of the two based on temporal response,

The arterial blood supply of the temporomandibular joint: an anatomical study and clinical implications.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze three-dimensional images of the arterial supply to the temporomandibular
joint.
Materials and Methods: Ten patients (five men and five women, mean age 36 years) without signs or symptoms of
temporomandibular disorders, who underwent contrast-enhanced computed tomographic (CT) scanning with
intravenous contrast, were studied. The direct volume rendering technique of CT images was used, and a data set of
images to visualize the vasculature of the human temporomandibular joint in three dimensions was created. After
elaboration of the data through post-processing, the arterial supply of the temporomandibular joint was studied.
Results: The analysis revealed the superficial temporal artery, the anterior tympanic artery, the deep temporal
artery, the auricular posterior artery, the transverse facial artery, the middle meningeal artery, and the maxillary
artery with their branches as the main arterial sources for the lateral and medial temporomandibular joint.
Conclusion: The direct volume rendering technique was found to be successful in the assessment of the arterial
supply to the temporomandibular joint. The superficial temporal artery and maxillary artery ran along the lateral
and medial sides of the condylar neck, suggesting that these arteries are at increased risk during soft-tissue procedures
such as an elective arthroplasty of the temporomandibular joint
Who I Am: The Meaning of Early Adolescents’ Most Valued Activities and Relationships, and Implications for Self-Concept Research
Self-concept research in early adolescence typically measures young people’s self-perceptions of competence in specific, adult-defined domains. However, studies have rarely explored young people’s own views of valued self-concept factors and their meanings. For two major self domains, the active and the social self, this mixed-methods study identified factors valued most by 526 young people from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds in Ireland (10-12 years), and explored the meanings associated with these in a stratified subsample (n = 99). Findings indicate that self-concept scales for early adolescence omit active and social self factors and meanings valued by young people, raising questions about content validity of scales in these domains. Findings also suggest scales may under-represent girls’ active and social selves; focus too much on some school-based competencies; and, in omitting intrinsically salient self domains and meanings, may focus more on contingent (extrinsic) rather than true (intrinsic) self-esteem
Rapid generation of chromosome-specific alphoid DNA probes using the polymerase chain reaction
Non-isotopic in situ hybridization of chromosome-specific alphoid DNA probes has become a potent tool in the study of numerical aberrations of specific human chromosomes at all stages of the cell cycle. In this paper, we describe approaches for the rapid generation of such probes using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and demonstrate their chromosome specificity by fluorescence in situ hybridization to normal human metaphase spreads and interphase nuclei. Oligonucleotide primers for conserved regions of the alpha satellite monomer were used to generate chromosome-specific DNA probes from somatic hybrid cells containing various human chromosomes, and from DNA libraries from sorted human chromosomes. Oligonucleotide primers for chromosome-specific regions of the alpha satellite monomer were used to generate specific DNA probes for the pericentromeric heterochromatin of human chromosomes 1, 6, 7, 17 and X directly from human genomic DNA

Initial evidence for the criterion-related and structural validity of the long versions of the direct and meta-perspectives of the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire

Copyright @ 2010 Taylor & Francis.The aim of the present study was to develop and initially validate a longer version of the direct (Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004) and meta-perspectives (Jowett, 2009a, 2009b) of the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q). In Study 1, instruments (e.g. questionnaires, scales, and inventories) that have been used to assess relationship quality in the broader psychological literature were examined and items potentially relevant to the coach-athlete relationship were identified. The content validity of the identified items was then assessed using expert panels. A final questionnaire was subsequently prepared and administered to 693 participants (310 coaches and 383 athletes). Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to assess the multidimensional nature of the questionnaire based on the 3Cs (i.e. closeness, commitment, and complementarity) model of the coach-athlete relationship. The findings indicated that the direct and meta-perspective items of the long versions of the CART-Q approached an adequate data fit. Moreover, evidence for the internal consistency and criterion validity of the new instruments was also obtained. In Study 2, the newly developed measure was administered to an independent sample of 251 individuals (145 athletes and 106 coaches). Further statistical support was gained for the factorial validity and reliability of the longer version of the CART-Q
Redesign and initial validation of an instrument to assess the motivational qualities of music in exercise: The Brunel Music Rating Inventory-2
In the present study, a measure to assess the motivational qualities of music in exercise was redesigned, extending previous
research efforts (Karageorghis et al., 1999). The original measure, the Brunel Music Rating Inventory (BMRI), had shown
limitations in its factor structure and its applicability to non-experts in music selection. Redesign of the BMRI used in-depth
interviews with eight participants (mean age 31.9 years, s¼8.9 years) to establish the initial item pool, which was examined
using a series of confirmatory factor analyses. A single-factor model provided a good fit across three musical selections with
different motivational qualities (comparative fit index, CFI: 0.95 – 0.98; standardized root mean residual, SRMR: 0.03 –
0.05). The single-factor model also demonstrated acceptable fit across two independent samples and both sexes using one
piece of music (CFI: 0.86 – 1.00; SRMR: 0.04 – 0.07). The BMRI was designed for experts in selecting music for exercise
(e.g. dance aerobic instructors), whereas the BMRI-2 can be used both by exercise instructors and participants. The
psychometric properties of the BMRI-2 are stronger than those of the BMRI and it is easier to use. The BMRI-2 provides a
valid and internally consistent tool by which music can be selected to accompany a bout of exercise or a training session.
