Coupling between counterpropagating cladding modes in fiber Bragg gratings

We present an experimental demonstration of energy transfer between counterpropagating cladding modes in a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). A strong FBG written in a standard photosensitive optical fiber is illuminated with a single cladding mode, and the power transferred between the forward propagating cladding mode and different backward propagating cladding modes is measured by using two auxiliary long period gratings. Resonances between cladding modes having 30 pm bandwidth and 8 dB rejection have been observed

Caracterización de los parámetros hidráulicos de la cobertera pérmica en el Horst del yacimiento carbonífero de Mina «La Camocha».

En la cobertera pérmica existente sobre el yacimiento carbonífero actualmente en explotación por Mina La Camocha, S. A., se localiza un acuífero multicapa con varios niveles claramente diferenciados. Por medio de diversas técnicas de estudio, se ha tratado de determinar los parámetros hidráulicos de estos materiales en varias localidades próximas a Gijón, con el fin de elaborar un esquema de funcionamiento hidráulico y estimar la posible influencia de este acuífero en las labores de explotación

Nuevos datos sobre la estructura general del Carbonífero en el Horst de La Camocha (Gijón, Asturias).

Una reciente campaña de investigación geológico-minera, mediante la realización de transversales de reconocimiento, sondeos de superficie e interior y perfiles sísmicos de reflexión, ha permitido profundizar en el conocimiento de la estructura del Carbonífero en el entorno de Mina La Camocha. En esta zona, al sur de Gijón, los materiales carboníferos, cubiertos por una cobertera permotriásica y jurásica, no afloran. Se precisa el estilo de plegamiento, analizándose y datándose las principales familias de fracturación. Is the new "new" digital journalism a type of activism? An analysis of "Jot Down", "Gatopardo" and "The New Yorker"

Digitization and the economic crisis have led journalism to a new paradigm (Albalad, 2018). Contents and customs have changed, supporting media has changed, new journalistic models are hybrids and the mainstream media do not always deal with the issues that society demands (Sims, 2018). With a knowledge of tradition, but following the path of innovation, narrative journalism emerges as a possible response to this state of affairs. The objective of this analysis is to identify the challenges facing narrative journalism and narrative journalists themselves in this regard. We analyse their formats, routines and content, study how their digitally existence (Drok & Hermans, 2016) and ask ourselves if they constitute a platform for journalistic activism. Three magazines were identified for the selection of case studies: Jot Down, Gatopardo and The New Yorker. Their digital models, content and literary quality are the principal reasons for their selection, in addition to their different seniorities, geographical backgrounds and formats. By deploying a qualitative research methodology based on content analysis (Voutsina, 2018), in-depth interviews (Johnson, 2002), non-participant observation and document review, this analysis suggests that the new new digital journalism is a kind of activist journalism that upholds the traditions of reporting, narrative journalism and literary quality. This study is based on two theoretical premises: narrative journalism, exemplified by authors such as Sims (1996) and Herrscher (2012) and digital journalism, represented by writers such as Rost (2006) and Domingo & Heinonen (2008)

Case report compatible with atypical myopathy occured in a grazzing horse occured in the north of Spain (Cantabria region)

La miopatía atípica, también llamada “mioglobinuria atípica”, es una enfermedad frecuentemente fatal, de origen desconocido, que afecta esporádicamente a caballos en pastoreo. Esta miopatía sólo ha sido confirmada en diferentes países europeos, aunque otros muchos casos compatibles también han sido comunicados en Australia, Canadá y Estados Unidos. El caballo considerado en el presente caso clínico, aparecido en el norte de España (Cantabria), padeció una enfermedad muscular de progreso agudo y rápido asociada con degeneración y necrosis de músculos respiratorios, posturales y linguales. Estas lesiones microscópicas observadas a nivel muscular, sumadas a los antecedentes, signos clínicos y datos laboratoriales, permiten establecer un diagnóstico compatible con miopatía atípica equina, lo que representa el primer caso de esta enfermedad comunicado en España. Aunque el principal agente etiológico implica es una planta tóxica endémica en la región (Senecio jacobea), esta enfermedad carece de tratamiento etiológico y, por ello, los veterinarios equinos que trabajan en el norte de España deben permanecer en alerta ante cualquier episodio clínico de esta enfermedad, para prevenir su aparición en otros caballos.Atypical myopathy, also called “atypical mioglobinuria”, is a frequently fatal myopathy of unknown origin occurring sporadically in grazing horses. The condition has been reported in several European countries and case reports prior the syndrome’s identification suggest that the condition has also been encountered in Australia, Canada and united States of America. The horse considered in the present case report, occurred in the north of Spain (Cantabria region), suffered a muscle disorder with a rapid and acute progress associated with degeneration and necrosis of respiratory, postural, and lingual muscles. These microscopic findings at the muscular level, added to the anamnesis, clinical signs and laboratorial data allow to establish a tentative diagnosis compatible with atypical myopathy. To our knowledge this case represents the first description of the condition in Spain. In spite the main suspected aetiological agent can be attributed to a local toxic plant (Senecio jacobea), this entity has not aetiological treatment. In consequence, equine practitioners in the north of Spain must be in alert to the early detection of any clinical case of this syndrome in order to prevent new episodes in other companion horses from the same pasture

Fracturas patológicas en la región de la cadera

Entre 1973 y 1992, fueron tratados en nuestra institución 20 casos de fracturas patológicas a nivel de la cadera, secundarias a metástasis esqueléticas. Se realizó tratamiento quirúrgico mediante osteosíntesis o artroplastias según la localización y la extensión de la lesión. En 8 casos, la fractura fué subcapital, en 6 fué pertrocantérea y en otros 6 casos fué subtrocantérea. En el tratamiento quirúrgico, se recalca la importancia de la fijación interna inmediata con la adición de metilmetacrilato y el uso de la radioterapia postoperatoria. Siempre se obtuvo la mejoría del dolor y un resultado funcional bueno en el 70% de los casos. En 7 casos, aparecieron complicaciones locales. El tratamiento quirúrgico debe ser agresivo en estos pacientes, ya que la rehabilitación inmediata es primordial en su calidad de vida.From 1973 to 1992, 20 cases of pathological fractures around the hip secondary to skeletal metastases were treated in our institution. The surgical treatment was performed by internal fixation or arthroplasty according the location and extension of the lesion. In 8 cases the fracture was located in the femoral neck, 6 cases were intertrochanteric fractures and 6 cases were subtrochanteric fractures. In the surgical management the importance of inmediately internal fixation, with the use of methylnietacrilate and post surgical radiotherapy are justified. Always the pain was relieved and the functional result was good in 70%. In 7 cases were local complications. The surgical treatment should be more agresive in these special patients, because the inmediately rehabilitation is essential in your quality lifes
