Jeszcze o potrzebie ujednolicenia terminologii onomastycznej

    Get PDF
The aim of the article is to propose the preparation of a list of Polish onomastics terms, which will be published online. Reference is made here to many works that draw attention to the need to organize and unify Polish onomastic terminology. It presents current ideas for solving this important issue, e.g. the assumptions of the dictionary of onomastic terminology by Zofia Abramowicz and Leonarda Dacewicz. Based on the existing lists of onomastic terminology (Polish, Slavic, European), the Onomastic Section of the Committee on Linguistics of the Polish Academy of Sciences decided to join (on the basis of grant applications submitted first to KBN and then to NCN, according to the idea of Prof. Robert Mrózek) in the preparation of a well-structured (and if possible unified) list of terms used in the science of personal names. The starting point is the development of a set of maximum terms within individual onomastic subdisciplines, from which the entries to the list will be extracted and then defined, with quotations from onomastic studies certifying their use and maybe recommendations for use or not. The ideal would be to organize them in such a way that they form a coherent image: from the most general to the most detailed terms. Such action, also in cooperation with representatives of fields using onomastic terminology (historians, geographers, cartographers), will in effect contribute to the ordering of Polish, Slavic and international terminology. Roberta Mrózka) do przygotowania uporządkowanego (i w miarę możliwości ujednoliconego) wykazu terminów używanych w nauce o nazwach własnych.

The Religious Practices of Hinduism in the Greater Chicago Area

This spring semester, as part of an engaged learning component of the course ‘Religions of Asia’, students visited a religious site related to the Indo-Asian religions studied throughout the course. My classmate and I visited the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont, Illinois. As part of our visit there, we photographed the temple buildings, observed architecture, and conducted interviews with three people. The interview covered questions about the history, the religious services, and demographics of the attendees among others. Through this project, we were able to compare and contrast beliefs of the religion that we learned in class to the first-hand experiences of its believers

A study of the user experience while working with mobile applications cooperating with sports bands

    Get PDF
The article analyses user experience while using two mobile applications, FitPro and Zepp Life that work with sports bands designed to monitor physical activity. As part of the study, the users were asked to perform tasks during which they used each app’s features. During the same research scenario, first on the first application and then on the second application, the user’s eye activity was recorded by means of the eyetracker. Then, each participant took part in a survey. Task completion time, eye-tracking indicators (the number of fixations, fixation duration, the number of blinks), users’ evaluation and the level of diagnosed errors were used for comparative analysis. All the results confirmed that the FitPro application, despite containing fewer features, was more intuitive, easier to use, more efficient, had a clear interface and, as a result, was better rated by the users

A Family of Generic Earth Pointing Satellites

    Get PDF
This paper outlines a family of generic earth pointing satellites. The smallest configuration is sized to fit a Get Away Special (GAS) container (2.5 cubic feet). The basic core of the largest member is sized to be scout launch vehicle compatible (18 cubic feet). The smallest member can easily accommodate 125 pounds of payload and generate 200 watts of electrical power. The largest can carry 500 pounds of payload and generate 1 Kilowatt of power. This family of earth pointing satellites is based on modular components that allow upward compatibility. To keep cost per unit volume low, tried and proven components are used which reduce testing of the integrated satellite. The modular design and standardization of power, and command and telemetry functions allow for ease of integration and system level checkout. The family limitations and their solutions are discussed as well as tradeoffs of various structural fabrication methods (metallic vs. composite vs. plastic)

Vibrotactile frequency discrimination on the wrist of visually impaired people

Development of devices for the visually impaired people equipped with a vibrating interface was the motivation of the research presented in the paper. Knowledge about discriminative ability of touch is crucial when designing devices which use tactile interfaces. The paper presents results of psychophysical studies on determining the vibrotactile frequency discrimination threshold on the wrist of blind and partially sighted people. The transformed adaptive method 1 up/2 down was used in the presented research. Thresholds were obtained on the ventral wrist at 5 frequencies: 25, 31.5, 63, 125 and 250 Hz. Results were examined to find factors which could influence the threshold value. Additionally, the guidelines for devices with vibrating interfaces supporting spatial orientation of the blind and partially sighted people was developed based on results and analysi
