    Understanding the Self-Efficacy of Assistant Principals in an Urban School Division: Patterns, Trends, and Challenges to Be Mastered

    This study sought to understand the perceived levels of managerial, instructional, and moral self-efficacy of assistant principals (N = 101) serving in an urban Albertan school jurisdiction. Levels of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1986) were measured using the Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale (PSES) (Tschannen-Moran & Gareis, 2004). Additionally, the instructional leadership indicators of the Alberta Leader Quality Standard (LQS) (Alberta Education, 2019) were measured for levels of importance and perceived level of proficiency by participants. Finally, assistant principals were asked to indicate if they held aspirations for principalship, provide rationale for their response, and express what professional learning experiences might be necessary to become a principal. This study contributed to the extant literature pertaining to building and realizing greater levels of self-efficacy in assistant principals, a population which has been chronically underserved and underrepresented in the literature. Existing research has suggested that more time and attention is needed in the domain of instructional leadership which is often overlooked due to the managerial demands of an administrative role that has not been fully defined, appreciated, or supported. The first phase of this study analyzed the PSES scores across three subscales and found that participants scored highest in efficacy for moral leadership, second highest in instructional, and lowest in managerial. These results were disaggregated by various demographic factors and suggested that females (n = 70) had the highest scores in all subscales compared to males (n = 31). The second phase of the research design asked participants to rate levels of importance and proficiency on the nine indicators inherent to the LQS instructional leadership domain. In both importance and proficiency, it was males who scored higher than females. A very strong correlation of r =.93 was found between the level of importance and level of proficiency across all participants. Relationships between the PSES instructional subscale and the LQS indicators revealed a stronger relationship for females r =.48 than males (r =.40). Finally, 33% of participants indicated aspirations to pursue principalship whereas 21% did not and the remainder were undecided. Ongoing long-term mentorship, more mastery learning experiences in instructional leadership and leading the operations of a learning community were among the top responses from the participants as to what is needed to further their professional development. This descriptive study sought to understand the landscape of assistant principals in an urban setting and how their self-efficacy scores and interaction with leadership standards (instructional leadership) might provide the school jurisdiction with insights on how to enhance existing assistant principal leadership programming

    Weak refinement in Z

    An important aspect in the specification of distributed systems is the role of the internal (or unobservable) operation. Such operations are not part of the user interface (i.e. the user cannot invoke them), however, they are essential to our understanding and correct modelling of the system. Various conventions have been employed to model internal operations when specifying distributed systems in Z. If internal operations are distinguished in the specification notation, then refinement needs to deal with internal operations in appropriate ways. However, in the presence of internal operations, standard Z refinement leads to undesirable implementations. In this paper we present a generalization of Z refinement, called weak refinement, which treats internal operations differently from observable operations when refining a system. We illustrate some of the properties of weak refinement through a specification of a telecommunications protocol

    Quantum atomic delocalization vs. structural disorder in amorphous silicon

    Quantum effects on the atom delocalization in amorphous silicon have been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations from 30 to 800 K. The quantum delocalization is appreciable vs. topological disorder, as seen from structural observables such as the radial distribution function (RDF). At low temperatures, the width of the first peak in the RDF increases by a factor of 1.5 due to quantum effects. The overall anharmonicity of the solid vibrations at finite temperatures in amorphous silicon is clearly larger than in the crystalline material. Low-energy vibrational modes are mainly located on coordination defects in the amorphous material.Comment: 5 pages, 5 PS figures, REVTE

    The importance of network and distributed systems management to supply and maintain services required by users has led to a demand for management facilities. Open network management is assisted by representing the system resources to be managed as objects, and providing standard services and protocols for interrogating and manipulating these objects. This paper examines the application of formal description techniques to the specification of managed objects by presenting a case study in the specification and testing of a management architecture. We describe a formal specification of a management architecture suitable for scheduling and distributing services across nodes in a distributed system. In addition, we show how formal specifications can be used to generate conformance tests for the management architecture

    Pattern formation in binary fluid mixtures induced by short-range competing interactions

    Molecular dynamics simulations and integral equation calculations of a simple equimolar mixture of diatomic molecules and monomers interacting via attractive and repulsive short-range potentials show the existence of pattern formation (microheterogeneity), mostly due to depletion forces away from the demixing region. Effective site-site potentials extracted from the pair correlation functions using an inverse Monte Carlo approach and an integral equation inversion procedure exhibit the features characteristic of a short-range attractive and long-range repulsive potential. When charges are incorporated into the model, this becomes a coarse grained representation of a room temperature ionic liquid, and as expected, intermediate range order becomes more pronounced and stable

    Composition, volume, and aspect ratio dependence of the strain distribution, band lineups and electron effective masses in self-assembled pyramidal In1-xGaxAs/GaAs and SixGe1-x/Si quantum dots

    We present a systematic investigation of the strain distribution of self-assembled pyramidal In1-xGaxAs/GaAs and SixGe1-x/Si quantum dots for the case of growth on a (001) substrate. The dependence of the biaxial and hydrostatic components of the strain on the quantum dot volume, aspect ratio, composition, and percentage of alloying x is studied using a method based on a Green's function technique. The dependence of the carriers' confining potentials and the electronic effective mass on the same parameters is then calculated in the framework of eight-band k .p theory. The results for which comparable published data are available are in good agreement with the theoretical values for strain profiles, confining potentials, and electronic effective mass. © 2002 American Institute of Physics
