    The Milky Way disk radial gradient from planetary nebulae reveled by Gaia

    Radial abundance gradients in the Galactic disc are one of the most important observational constraints to study the chemical evolution of the Milky Way galaxy and also other galaxies in the universe. The radial gradient is the result of many physical processes that occur since the formation of the Galaxy, as e.g. the infalling gas to form the disc, the star formation history, radial gas flows and the radial migration of stars. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are the offspring of low and intermediate-mass stars consisting of an expanding, glowing shell of ionised gas ejected from red giant stars late in their lives. They have very intense optical emission lines and some elements observed in PNe are not modified during the progenitor star evolution, making then important tools to probe the Galactic chemical evolution. However, PNe distances are subject of great uncertainties, since, unlike main sequence stars, these objects do not have a physical parameter that is direct dependent of the distance. In this work, we have used Gaia DR3 database in order to derive reliable distances for a sample of 294 Galactic PNe. The radial gradient from the O, S, Ar and Ne are computed using the new distances in the radial range from 3 to 15 kpc. The results are consistent with a flatter gradient than previously found and with a change of the slope around 8 kpc, which coincides with the Milky Way corotation radius

    Planetary nebulae have been used extensively to study the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. They are originated by stars of medium and low mass (0.8 M⊙ to 8 M⊙) that have their outermost layers ejected, and the ejected material continues to be ionized by the white dwarf. There are countless works where the radial gradients of chemical abundances of the Milky Way were obtained from the NPs. Some works report that the oxygen gradient has deviations from a simple linear fit, but this gradient discontinuity is not a consensus in the literature. This apparent disagreement stems from the uncertainties involved in determining key quantities to obtain the gradient: chemical abundances and distances. In this work, we have a sample of 347 PNs with known chemical abundances, used for the construction of the radial abundance gradient of the Milky Way disk, from galactocentric distances obtained from the Gaia mission and statistical methods, where a physical property , like the diameter for example, is used to obtain the distances of the NPs, allowing a more accurate obtainment of the radial gradient of abundances of the Milky Way disk.As nebulosas planetárias têm sido utilizadas extensivamente para o estudo da evolução química da Via Láctea. Elas são originadas por estrelas de média e baixa massa (0.8 M⊙ a 8 M⊙) que tem suas camadas mais externas ejetadas, sendo que o material ejetado continua sendo ionizado pela anã branca. São inúmeros trabalhos onde os gradientes radiais de abundâncias químicas da Via Láctea foram obtidos a partir das NPs. Alguns trabalhos reportam que o gradiente de oxigênio possui desvios de um simples ajuste linear, porém essa descontinuidade do gradiente não é um consenso na literatura. Este aparente desacordo provém das incertezas envolvidas na determinação de grandezas chaves para a obtenção do gradiente: abundâncias químicas e distâncias. Neste trabalho, contamos com uma amostra de 347 PNs com abundâncias químicas conhecidas, empregadas para a construção do gradiente radial de abundâncias do disco da Via Láctea, a partir de distâncias galactocêntricas obtidas a partir da missão Gaia e de métodos estatísticos, onde uma propriedade física, como o diâmetro por exemplo, ´e utilizado para obter as distâncias das NPs, permitindo a obtenção mais acurada do gradiente radial de abundâncias do disco da Via Láctea

    The production of tt‾ , W+bb‾ and W+cc‾ is studied in the forward region of proton–proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98±0.02 fb−1 . The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets.     Rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART): Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Alveolar recruitment followed by ventilation at optimal titrated PEEP may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS, but the effects on mortality and other clinical outcomes remain unknown. This article reports the rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART). Methods/Design: ART is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized (concealed), controlled trial, which aims to determine if maximum stepwise alveolar recruitment associated with PEEP titration is able to increase 28-day survival in patients with ARDS compared to conventional treatment (ARDSNet strategy). We will enroll adult patients with ARDS of less than 72 h duration. The intervention group will receive an alveolar recruitment maneuver, with stepwise increases of PEEP achieving 45 cmH(2)O and peak pressure of 60 cmH2O, followed by ventilation with optimal PEEP titrated according to the static compliance of the respiratory system. In the control group, mechanical ventilation will follow a conventional protocol (ARDSNet). In both groups, we will use controlled volume mode with low tidal volumes (4 to 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight) and targeting plateau pressure <= 30 cmH2O. The primary outcome is 28-day survival, and the secondary outcomes are: length of ICU stay; length of hospital stay; pneumothorax requiring chest tube during first 7 days; barotrauma during first 7 days; mechanical ventilation-free days from days 1 to 28; ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month survival. ART is an event-guided trial planned to last until 520 events (deaths within 28 days) are observed. These events allow detection of a hazard ratio of 0.75, with 90% power and two-tailed type I error of 5%. All analysis will follow the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: If the ART strategy with maximum recruitment and PEEP titration improves 28-day survival, this will represent a notable advance to the care of ARDS patients.     Measurement of the B0s→μ+μ− Branching Fraction and Effective Lifetime and Search for B0→μ+μ− Decays

    A search for the rare decays Bs0→μ+μ- and B0→μ+μ- is performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in pp collisions corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 4.4  fb-1. An excess of Bs0→μ+μ- decays is observed with a significance of 7.8 standard deviations, representing the first observation of this decay in a single experiment. The branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs0→μ+μ-)=(3.0±0.6-0.2+0.3)×10-9, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The first measurement of the Bs0→μ+μ- effective lifetime, τ(Bs0→μ+μ-)=2.04±0.44±0.05  ps, is reported. No significant excess of B0→μ+μ- decays is found, and a 95% confidence level upper limit, B(B0→μ+μ-)<3.4×10-10, is determined.     The production cross-section of J/ψ pairs is measured using a data sample of pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 \sqrt{s}=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 279 ±11 pb−1^{−1}. The measurement is performed for J/ψ mesons with a transverse momentum of less than 10 GeV/c in the rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5. The production cross-section is measured to be 15.2 ± 1.0 ± 0.9 nb. The first uncertainty is statistical, and the second is systematic.     Production cross-sections of prompt charm mesons are measured using data from pppp collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 5 5\,TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.60±0.33 8.60\pm0.33\,pb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The production cross-sections of D0D^0, D+D^+, Ds+D_s^+, and D∗+D^{*+} mesons are measured in bins of charm meson transverse momentum, pTp_{\text{T}}, and rapidity, yy. They cover the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.52.0 < y < 4.5 and transverse momentum ranges 0<pT<10 GeV/c0 < p_{\text{T}} < 10\, \text{GeV}/c for D0D^0 and D+D^+ and 1<pT<10 GeV/c1 < p_{\text{T}} < 10\, \text{GeV}/c for Ds+D_s^+ and D∗+D^{*+} mesons. The present study aimed to understand the effects of nCuO and dissolved copper (Cu) on two ornamental Amazon fish species: dwarf cichlid (Apistogramma agassizii) and cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi). Fish were exposed to 50% of the LC50 for nCuO (dwarf cichlid 58.31 μg L−1 and cardinal tetra 69.6 μg L−1) and Cu (dwarf cichlid 20 μg L−1 and cardinal tetra 22.9 μg L−1) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Following exposure, aerobic metabolic rate (ṀO2), gill osmoregulatory physiology and mitochondrial function, oxidative stress markers, and morphological damage were evaluated. Our results revealed species specificity in metabolic stress responses. An increase of ṀO2 was noted in cardinal tetra exposed to Cu, but not nCuO, whereas ṀO2 in dwarf cichlid showed little change with either treatment. In contrast, mitochondria from dwarf cichlid exhibited increased proton leak and a resulting decrease in respiratory control ratios in response to nCuO and Cu exposure. This uncoupling was directly related to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels.     The end of an entire biome? World's largest wetland, the Pantanal, is menaced by the Hidrovia project which is uncertain to sustainably support large-scale navigation

    The resurgent navigation project known as the Hidrovia Paraguay-Paraná threatens the integrity of the Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, which is considered a biome of its own. Intensive barge navigation is intended to transport crops (soybean, sugar, corn) and cement, iron and manganese from areas of production in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia to the oceanic ports of the Plata River. This short communication assembles the information available on the potential impacts of the planned deepening of the natural channel of the Paraguay River in its ~700 km-long upper section. These river channel alterations would disconnect the river from its floodplain, shorten the inundation period, and shrink the wetland area, resulting in severe degradation of the globally outstanding biological and cultural diversity of the Pantanal. The river sediments are mostly sandy and would require perpetual dredging. The reaches needing the most intensive dredging are those of the highest ecological value, protected as a National Park, UNESCO World Heritage and Biosphere Reserves, and various Indigenous reserves and Ramsar sites. Climate change is projected to increase the occurrence of low water periods. Between 2019 and 2021, navigation was impossible even in the already-deepened reaches of the Paraguay River between Corumbá and Asuncion during long periods of the year. Thus, despite considerable financial and technical efforts, the success of the navigation project is doubtful, whereas enormous environmental, cultural, and social impacts can be anticipated. For these reasons, the Brazilian government had already turned down the project in 2000. We suggest alternative, less impactful modes of transport of commodities, e.g., via railway
