Trace-metaldynamics in response of increase CO2 and iron availability in a coastal mesocosm experiment

    Get PDF
A mesocosm experiment was performed in the Raunefjord (Norway) to study changes in dissolved Cu (dCu) and Fe (dFe), and in the elemental composition of particles during an Emiliania huxleyi dominated bloom. The CO2 treatments consisted of present (LC; 390 ppmV) and predicted levels (HC; 900 ppmV) and iron conditions were created with the addition of the siderophore desferoxamine B (DFB). Our results showed the DFB addition enhanced the solubility of Fe in this fjord environment. Initially, dFe was comparable among treatments but after the addition, the HC and/or +DFB treatments presented higher levels and finally, the only ones maintaining high dFe were the +DFB treatments. Unlike dCu presented indistinguishable levels in all mesocosms over time. Particulate metals were normalised to P and Al to evaluate the relative influence of biotic and abiotic sources. The Fe:P ratios decreased with time and compared to published phytoplankton ratios suggest Fe storage. On the other hand, Fe:Al ratios were relatively closer to the crustal ratios suggesting that the abiotic source was more important for this metal. Trends for other metals will be discussed.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

    Contextual perception under active inference

Human social interactions depend on the ability to resolve uncertainty about the mental states of others. The context in which social interactions take place is crucial for mental state attribution as sensory inputs may be perceived differently depending on the context. In this paper, we introduce a mental state attribution task where a target-face with either an ambiguous or an unambiguous emotion is embedded in different social contexts. The social context is determined by the emotions conveyed by other faces in the scene. This task involves mental state attribution to a target-face (either happy or sad) depending on the social context. Using active inference models, we provide a proof of concept that an agent’s perception of sensory stimuli may be altered by social context. We show with simulations that context congruency and facial expression coherency improve behavioural performance in terms of decision times. Furthermore, we show through simulations that the abnormal viewing strategies employed by patients with schizophrenia may be due to (i) an imbalance between the precisions of local and global features in the scene and (ii) a failure to modulate the sensory precision to contextualise emotions

Solid rocket booster internal flow analysis by highly accurate adaptive computational methods

The primary objective of this project was to develop an adaptive finite element flow solver for simulating internal flows in the solid rocket booster. Described here is a unique flow simulator code for analyzing highly complex flow phenomena in the solid rocket booster. New methodologies and features incorporated into this analysis tool are described

Who is in the transition gap? Transition from CAMHS to AMHS in the Republic of Ireland

    Get PDF
Objective: The ITRACK study explored the process and predictors of transition between Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) in the Republic of Ireland. Method: Following ethical approval, clinicians in each of Ireland's four Health Service Executive (HSE) areas were contacted, informed about the study and invited to participate. Clinicians identified all cases who had reached the transition boundary (i.e. upper age limit for that CAMHS team ) between January and December 2010. Data were collected on clinical and socio-demographic details and factors that informed the decision to refer or not refer to AMHS and case notes were scrutinised to ascertain the extent of information exchanged between services during transition

Antitumour responses induced by short-term pretreatment with tumour cells.

The injection (s.c. or i.p.) of 10(6) live or lethally irradiated methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma cells into CBA/Ca mice one or 2 days before i.v. challenge with the same tumour inhibited the formation of artificial lung tumour metastases. In addition, it also frequently enhanced the cytostatic effect of peritoneal exudate cells on monolayers of the same tumour. The effects on lung tumour metastasis were not noted if X-irradiated tumour was injected i.v., or if s.c. administration was delayed until one day after i.v. challenge. Similar effects on tumour growth were also observed in C3Hf/Bu mice and (CBA/Ca x A/HeJ) F1 hybrids which were pretreated (s.c.) with tumour shortly before i.v. challenge with the same tumour. Further studies in CBA/Ca mice suggested that the protective effect was tumour-specific, for the growth of i.v. injected tumour was not significantly inhibited by pretreatement with a number of other MC-induced or spontaneous tumours from the same and different strains

A new method to estimate the lifetime of long-life product categories

    Get PDF
Increased recycling and reuse rates are a central part of the objectives laid out by the COP21. Nonetheless, the practical implementation of what has been called the circular economy, as well as its true potential are not easily established. This is because the impact and implementation time scales of any intervention depend on knowing the lifetime of products, which is frequently unknown. This is particularly true in construction, responsible for 39% of worldwide emissions, 11% of which are embodied. Most MFA models will simply assume a range of plausible life expectancies when bottom-up data is lacking (e.g. for buildings). In this work, we propose a novel method of identification using the high quality but highly aggregated trade data available, and use it to establish a “mortality curve” for buildings and other long-lasting products. This identification method is intended to provide more reliable inputs to existing MFA models. It is widely applicable due to the general availability of the underlying data. Using it on UK trade data, we identify product classes at 1 year for packaging/home scrap, one around 10 years for vehicles/equipment, and around 50 years for construction. The identification approach was then validated using classical approaches using bottom up data for vehicles

The effects of ocean acidification and siderophore additions on trace-metal dynamics during an Emiliania Huxleyi- dominated bloom in a coastal mesocosm experiment

The combined impacts of high CO2 and changes in trace metal availability on plankton remain largely unknown. A 22 days mesocosm experiment was carried out in the Raunefjord, off Bergen, Norway (June 2012) to investigate the interactive effects of increased CO2 and changes in iron availability in the pelagic community. Twelve mesocosms covered by PAR and UVR transparent lids were used. The CO2 treatments consisted of present (LC; 390 ppmV) and predicted levels for year 2100 (HC; 900 ppmV). On day 7, half of the mesocoms were amended with the siderophore desferoxamine B (DFB) at 70 nM (final concentration). We studied changes in dissolved Cu (dCu) and Fe (dFe), and in the elemental composition of particles. Dissolved Fe and dCu were measured by chemiluminescence flow injection analysis, while particulate metals were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometry. The metals were normalised to P and Al to evaluate the relative influence of biotic and abiotic sources. Samples were taken throughout a bloom of the coccolithophore E. huxleyi. Further details will be discussed.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tec
