Business Case and Technology Analysis for 5G Low Latency Applications

    Get PDF
A large number of new consumer and industrial applications are likely to change the classic operator's business models and provide a wide range of new markets to enter. This article analyses the most relevant 5G use cases that require ultra-low latency, from both technical and business perspectives. Low latency services pose challenging requirements to the network, and to fulfill them operators need to invest in costly changes in their network. In this sense, it is not clear whether such investments are going to be amortized with these new business models. In light of this, specific applications and requirements are described and the potential market benefits for operators are analysed. Conclusions show that operators have clear opportunities to add value and position themselves strongly with the increasing number of services to be provided by 5G.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

Comunicación presentada en las Jornadas Internacionales ICSA 2017 sobre Dinámicas sectarias y radicalizaciónCoercive persuasion refers to the control and manipulation developed by abusive groups, through different aggressive strategies that influence changes in the environment of its members, distorting cognition, altering emotions and generating significant psychosocial damage. It is a subtle, gradual and powerful force that affects around 500,000 Spanish victims of cultic groups (Cuevas & Perlado, 2011; Cuevas, 2012). Attaining power is one of the main goals of these groups, being the control and exploitation of the individual a part of the process. This derives to individuals giving up their own goals, freedom, material possessions, family and social networks, health or even life itself (Rodríguez-Carballeira, Saldaña, Almendros, Martin-Peña, Escartín, & Porrúa-Garcia, 2015). Such strategies are often implemented in a planned, graduate way and using deceit, difficulting that people who targeted are able to detect their evident aggressiveness and the generated damage. If there is an obvious shortage of instruments measuring psychological abuse in different fields (partner violence, harassment, bullying, etc.), the development of tools to assess the presence of such strategies in group contexts is even more scarce (Almendros, Gámez-Guadix, Carrobles & Rodríguez Carballeira, 2011). One of those assessment tools, the Interview for Detection of Coercive Persuasion (Cuevas & Canto, 2006) contains a wide range of coercive and abusive practises taking place within manipulative group. It has been applied in Spain in the forensic field in prosecutions of abusive groups (Dharma Tradición, Casa Yoga, Miguelianos, Revelance, etc.). The main objective of this recently validated tool (Cuevas, 2016) was to identify and provide evidences of the systematic application of coercive persuasion techniques on victims of abusive groups (Cuevas, 2012, 2016). Deriving from this instrument, sharing objectives, a new scale of 40 items and validated in Spanish population: the Scale of Detection of Coercive Persuasion in Group Contexts, or EDPC (Cuevas, 2016 ). To validate the EDPC, a Spanish sample of 134 people who identified themselves as having been abused or having been overly controlled by a group was selected. To assess criterion validity of the instrument, other different instruments (BSI MOS-SSS, RSE, SLEQ, ICP and EDS) were used. The group psychological abuse scale GPA (Chambers, Langone, Dole, & Grice, 1994), Spanish modified version (Almendros et al.,2004; Almendros et al., 2009) was used to assess the convergent validity of the instrument. The EDPC showed appropriate psychometric properties. In respect to reliability, the standardized Cronbach alpha coefficient reached a value of 0.97. The exploratory factorial analysis indicated the presence of a factor (coercive persuasion), establishing the suitability of a one-dimensional model. This scale aims to be useful in clinical and forensic fields, in order to assess the control and manipulation exercised in group contexts. Using it could be relevant to provide evidences of coercive groups practises, helping at trying to determinate the relationship between damage on the victims and the specific actions taken by groups or individuals who perform the abusive behaviors.Universidad de Málaga. Fixed-Mobile Convergence in the 5G era: From Hybrid Access to Converged Core

    Get PDF
The availability of different paths to communicate to a user or device introduces several benefits, from boosting enduser performance to improving network utilization. Hybrid access is a first step in enabling convergence of mobile and fixed networks, however, despite traffic optimization, this approach is limited as fixed and mobile are still two separate core networks inter-connected through an aggregation point. On the road to 5G networks, the design trend is moving towards an aggregated network, where different access technologies share a common anchor point in the core. This enables further network optimization in addition to hybrid access, examples are userspecific policies for aggregation and improved traffic balancing across different accesses according to user, network, and service context. This paper aims to discuss the ongoing work around hybrid access and network convergence by Broadband Forum and 3GPP. We present some testbed results on hybrid access and analyze some primary performance indicators such as achievable data rates, link utilization for aggregated traffic and session setup latency. We finally discuss the future directions for network convergence to enable future scenarios with enhanced configuration capabilities for fixed and mobile convergence.Comment: to appear in IEEE Networ

Improving anti-cancer therapies through a better identification and characterization of non-canonical MHC-I associated peptides

Increasing evidence of non-canonical protein translation has sparked interest in their identification and characterization for use in immunotherapy. In addition, recent studies on the repertoire of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) associated peptides (MAPs or immunopeptidome), have suggested that MAPs derived from these translations are potential targets for cancer immunotherapy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of these MAPs in cancer by developing methods to facilitate their identification and their validation as potential targets for immunotherapy. To facilitate the identification of non-canonical proteins, we developed Ribo-db, a proteogenomic approach that combines RNA sequencing, ribosome profiling and mass spectrometry. This approach enables the generation of specific databases aimed at including protein diversity. The use of Ribo-db to analyze diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) samples revealed that approximately 10% of MAPs were derived from non-canonical proteins. These proteins had distinct properties compared to those derived from canonical proteins. They had shorter lengths and lower stability, but greater efficiency in generating MAPs. Importantly, we found limited overlap between the non-canonical proteins detected in the immunopeptidome and those detected in the whole proteome suggesting the existence of two distinct non-canonical protein repertoires. Knowing that non-canonical MAPs can be effective targets for cancer immunotherapy, we developed BamQuery, a tool to assess their expression in tissues to determine whether they can be used in a vaccine. BamQuery aims to predict the probability of MHC-I presentation of each peptide in different tissues based on its RNA expression. Using BamQuery, we found that previously identified tumor antigens (TA) would be highly expressed in healthy tissues, making them poor candidates for immunotherapy. In addition, we also identified highly potential immunotherapeutic targets in DLBCL that were derived from non-canonical translations. These targets showed promising as they were poorly expressed in normal tissues but highly expressed and shared in tumor samples. Thus, BamQuery proved to be a useful tool for identifying and prioritizing potential immunotherapeutic targets. Overall, our research indicated that non-canonical regions of the genome increase the diversity of MAPs that can be recognized by T cells. Furthermore, the expression of MAPs in tissues can be used as a predictor of their presentation to MHC I to identify reliable targets for immunotherapy, for which BamQuery is an effective tool.

Fil: Cuevas, Maria Fernanda. In pre-primary education, there is a need for specific research into developing awareness of literary genres that can be used in the EFL classes to promote literacy. A total of 264 students on the Teaching English for Pre-primary Education course participated on an online questionnaire adapted from Cremin et al. (2008), using both qualitative and quantitative questions to provide an insight into the issue. The first part of the questionnaire examined the reading habits of pre-service teachers. The second part probed into the specific knowledge of texts and authors in general for use in the EFL pre-primary classroom. The results showed that there is a very limited tradition of reading outside the EFL classroom from students’ experiences, that there is a very narrow catalogue of texts and genres that students are familiar with and lastly, that literature is primarily seen as a vehicle for vocabulary acquisition. Thus, it is essential to encourage future EFL teachers not only to become more knowledgeable about genres, but also aware of the different reasons to use literature in the classroom to promote literacy.

Integrating Situation Awareness Assessment Into Test and Evaluation

To guarantee the success if network- centric operations, warfighters need the ability to extract and share critical task-relevant information to develop and maintain the situation awareness that is so critical far effective team performance. As such, the design of emerging technologies and systems must adopt a user-centric approach, with consideration for human information processing capabilities and limitations. In turn, to ensure that these technologies and systems are meeting their design objectives, test and evaluation must similarly be expanded to include metrics that assess how well system features and functions are supporting critical human cognitive processes such as situation awareness and decision-making. In this article, we address this issue, focusing specifically on situation awareness. We discuss how situation awareness assessment, at both the individual and team level, can be integrated into test and evaluation. We also cite examples from our own research to demonstrate the diagnosticity afforded by situation awareness assessment

Physicochemical Foliar Traits Predict Assemblages of Litter/ Humus Detritivore Arthropods

Plant functional traits influence the decomposition of their own residues occurring underneath individual plant species. Arthropods associated to litter are critical components influencing decomposition. Nevertheless, few studies have established a direct relation between plant traits and belowground arthropods. To address this relation at the individual plant species scale, this study was conducted in the Guánica dry forest, Puerto Rico, by selecting five tree species and ten isolated trees/species where variations due to neighbor trees are reduced. Mature green leaves, litter, and associated arthropods were sampled from November 2004 through September 2005. Collected arthropods were counted and classified, and abundances were standardized to ind/m2. Arthropod abundance did not differ among plant species, but richness, and species and trophic composition were different among the plant species. Predators, omnivores, and sucking herbivores showed a similar species composition among plant species, while detritivore was the only trophic groups with a different species composition among plants. These results are further supported by canonical correspondence analysis results showing that detritivore arthropod species composition covaries with the physicochemical characteristics of mature green leaves of plants. These findings support that the plant idiosyncratic characteristics affect the structure of litter/humus arthropods up to the first consumer level
