Armament and Society in the Mirror of the Avar Archaelogy The Transdanubia-Phenomenon Revisited

One of the most significant problems of the A var archaeology is the question of Germanic (mainly Gepidic) continuity in Transdanubia. In my paper I would like to make some comments on the so-called Transdanubia-phenomenon of the Early A var Carpathian Basin based on the analysis of weapon-combinations found in six cemeteries of Eastern Transdanubia. I intend to answer the following questions: I. How far the weapon-combinations of the East-Transdanubian cemeteries of the early Avar Period (568-650) are identical or similar to the general picture of Avar armament drawn by contemporary cemeteries? 2. Are the weapon-combinations or armament of these cemeteries similar to that of the earlier Gepidic and Langobardic sites from the early 6th centuries or to the contemporary Germanic (Alemannic, Frank or Bavarian) cemeteries of the present-day Germany? As a result, the early A var cemeteries of Transdanubia are characterized by the relatively high number of close-combat weapons compared to other sites of the Avar Khaganate. However, comparing to Merovingian sites the burials containing only close-combat weapons are very low and in most of the cases the weapon-combinations characteristic to this culture is missing

The siege of Constantinople was a turning point not only in the history of the Avars, but for the Byzantines, too. The city was first time threatened by siege followed by several attempts of the Muslims. The history of the siege is thoroughly investigated by its written sources, however the identifications of the places mentioned by the contemporain accounts are often dubious. The previous scholarship on the siege neglected a main source of the siege: the Theodosian and Anastasian city walls and in general the defence system of the city, although their analysis can explain itself the outcome of the attack. The aim of my paper is to illuminate a historical event with the light of some topographical and archaeological data, and to offer a better understanding both for the assault and for the function of one of the most significant fortification of the Late Antique world

Az avar közelharci fegyverek története. Funkcionális megközelítés

A dolgozat az avar kori szúró- és vágófegyverek történetét mutatja be funkcionális szempontból. Összefoglalja a két fegyverkategória tipo-kronológiai vizsgálatát. Az avar hadseregről és fegyverzetről szóló írott és régészeti források kritikai értékelése alapján rámutat a két közelharci fegyver fő fejlődési tendenciáira, valamint az avarok harcmodorának változásaira. E fegyverek használatát az avar korban alapvetően befolyásolta a kengyel megjelenése, ami a nehézlovasság szerepének növekedéséhez vezetett. A szúrófegyverek fejlődését elsősorban a védőfegyverzet változásaira adott válaszreakcióként értékelhetjük, hiszen a lándzsahegyek elkeskenyedése a láncpáncélok gyakoribbá válásának köszönhető. A kardok új típusú (kétpontos) felfüggesztése lehetővé tette a vágó-fegyverek átalakulását: e fegyvereknél a kétélű kardoktól az egyélűség és az ívelt pengéjű szablyák felé mutató fejlődési tendencia figyelhető meg.
