The role of normative theory in the study of international relations: A critical assessment.

The thesis argues for the centrality of normative theory in the study of international relations because of its unique capacity to address values comprehensively, in contrast to the dominant traditions of political realism which marginalises their theoretical significance. Two themes develop, each reflecting opposing pairs: fact/value, is/ought, description/prescription, feasibility/desirability. The first theme concerns the epistemological framework provided by a normative account of such values as the security and stability of knowledge and the orderly apprehension of the world. In contrast to realism, normative theory maintains the distinction between sensory experience and the assignment of meaning, indicating the contingent nature of epistemological foundations. The second theme concerns the political conditions of knowledge which determine the role of different theories, indicating the need for an adaptation of the traditional normative scholarship by overcoming the separation of ethics from politics which has so far limited its role. As values are central phenomena in politics, and politics is essentially normative in form (as is knowledge of it), consideration of value questions cannot be limited to peripheral commentary. The two themes emerge through analyses of the theoretical literature in international relations; of the philosophical foundations of normative theory; of its relationship to ideas and ideologies; of the encapsulation of values and interests in world views; of the communicative dynamic of norms in ethics and epistemology; and finally of the applied cases of deterrence, and foreign policy. In-bound and out-bound call centres have developed due to the spread of information and communication technologies and growing demand for information and technical support on a round-the-clock basis. Intense cost competition in the call centre sector has been the impetus for the decentralization of call centre activity to smaller peripheral cities in western Canada. Lethbridge, Alberta provides an apt case study venue with the birth of five call centres in just four years. Locational factors such as Canadian dollar exchange rates, time zones, and business climate are identified and evaluated based on interviews with management respondents. While call centre occupations have been traditionally viewed as low skilled, low paid, and “dead-end jobs,” the Lethbridge experience suggests some basis for a more optimistic view.Ye

The benthic ecology of False Bay : with notes on the analysis of shallow-water soft substrata

This work continues the marine tradition of the Department of Zoology but attempts to open-up a new field by tackling for the first time the ecology of the shallow sea bed. False Bay is accessible and provides a large area that is virtually unaffected by rivers or the works of man. Its situation happens to be particularly interesting. It is the nearest part of the flat, submarine shelf called the Agulhas Bank, where there are valuable fishing grounds; and it lies at the boundary of two very different masses of water. Study of False Bay should, in addition, be of interest in throwing light on the contrast between the shallows of the sea and those of lagoons and estuaries. Field work started with dredging from hired fishing boats. It was soon obvious that one of the most important regions of the sea was escaping notice, that above the shallowest depth in which dredges could be worked and below low tide level. This region could only be studied by diving and so a programme of diving with frogman kit was started. Dredging and diving meant considerable training in non-academic techniques not only in the field but in designing new gear (eg. dredges, underwater camera and underwater electronic flash)

Equilibrium studies on pure compounds : normal propyl alcohol

Three grades of normal propyl alcohol have been purified by several methods. The degree of purity has been established by refractometric, ebulliometric, and viscometric measurements, the best product being 99.65 volume % pure as measured by gas chromatographic analysis. A vapor-liquid equilibrium apparatus has been modified and reconstructed in preparation for vapor pressure measurements of n-propanol up to the critical point. Several semi-empirical equations have been fitted to Young's vapor pressure data for n-propanol with a view to their utilization in presenting data on an homologous series or on a generalized basis.
