Non-equilibrium Casimir forces: Spheres and sphere-plate
We discuss non-equilibrium extensions of the Casimir force (due to
electromagnetic fluctuations), where the objects as well as the environment are
held at different temperatures. While the formalism we develop is quite
general, we focus on a sphere in front of a plate, as well as two spheres, when
the radius is small compared to separation and thermal wavelengths. In this
limit the forces can be expressed analytically in terms of the lowest order
multipoles, and corroborated with results obtained by diluting parallel plates
of vanishing thickness. Non-equilibrium forces are generally stronger than
their equilibrium counterpart, and may oscillate with separation (at a scale
set by material resonances). For both geometries we obtain stable points of
zero net force, while two spheres may have equal forces in magnitude and
direction resulting in a self-propelling state.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
A randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a single session of nurse administered massage for short term relief of chronic non-malignant pain
Background: Massage is increasingly used to manage chronic pain but its benefit has not been clearly established. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of a single session of nurse-administered massage for the short term relief of chronic non-malignant pain and anxiety.
Methods: A randomised controlled trial design was used, in which the patients were assigned to a massage or control group. The massage group received a 15 minute manual massage and the control group a 15 minute visit to talk about their pain. Adult patients attending a pain relief unit with a diagnosis of chronic pain whose pain was described as moderate or severe were eligible for
the study. An observer blind to the patients' treatment group carried out assessments immediately before (baseline), after treatment and 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours later. Pain was assessed using 100 mm visual analogue scale and the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Pain Relief was assessed using a five point verbal rating scale. Anxiety was assessed with the Spielberger short form State-Trait Anxiety
Inventory.
Results: 101 patients were randomised and evaluated, 50 in the massage and 51 in the control group. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups at baseline interview. Patients in the massage but not the control group had significantly less pain compared to baseline immediately after and one hour post treatment. 95% confidence interval for the difference in mean pain reduction at one hour post treatment between the massage and control groups is 5.47 mm to 24.70 mm. Patients in the massage but not the control group had a statistically significant reduction in anxiety compared to baseline immediately after and at 1 hour post treatment.
Conclusion: Massage is effective in the short term for chronic pain of moderate to severe intensity
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Physical Properties of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Clusters on the Celestial Equator
We present the optical and X-ray properties of 68 galaxy clusters selected
via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect at 148 GHz by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope
(ACT). Our sample, from an area of 504 square degrees centered on the celestial
equator, is divided into two regions. The main region uses 270 square degrees
of the ACT survey that overlaps with the co-added ugriz imaging from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) over Stripe 82 plus additional near-infrared pointed
observations with the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-meter telescope. We confirm
a total of 49 clusters to z~1.3, of which 22 (all at z>0.55) are new
discoveries. For the second region the regular-depth SDSS imaging allows us to
confirm 19 more clusters up to z~0.7, of which 10 systems are new. We present
the optical richness, photometric redshifts, and separation between the SZ
position and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find no significant offset
between the cluster SZ centroid and BCG location and a weak correlation between
optical richness and SZ-derived mass. We also present X-ray fluxes and
luminosities from the ROSAT All Sky Survey which confirm that this is a massive
sample. One of the newly discovered clusters, ACT-CL J0044.4+0113 at z=1.1
(photometric), has an integrated XMM-Newton X-ray temperature of kT_x=7.9+/-1.0
keV and combined mass of M_200a=8.2(-2.5,+3.3)x10^14 M_sun/h70 placing it among
the most massive and X-ray-hot clusters known at redshifts beyond z=1. We also
highlight the optically-rich cluster ACT-CL J2327.4-0204 (RCS2 2327) at z=0.705
(spectroscopic) as the most significant detection of the whole equatorial
sample with a Chandra-derived mass of M_200a=1.9(-0.4,+0.6)x10^15 M_sun/h70,
comparable to some of the most massive known clusters like "El Gordo" and the

Measurement of refractive index of single microparticles
The refractive index of single microparticles is derived from precise measurement and rigorous modeling of the stiffness of a laser trap. We demonstrate the method for particles of four different materials with diameters from 1.6 to 5.2 microns and achieve an accuracy of better than 1%. The method greatly contributes as a new characterization technique because it works best under conditions (small particle size, polydispersion) where other methods, such as absorption spectroscopy, start to fail. Particles need not be transferred to a particular fluid, which prevents particle degradation or alteration common in index matching techniques. Our results also show that advanced modeling of laser traps accurately reproduces experimental reality
A survey of statistics in three UK general practice journal
Background
Many medical specialities have reviewed the statistical content of their journals. To our knowledge this has not been done in general practice. Given the main role of a general practitioner as a diagnostician we thought it would be of interest to see whether the statistical methods reported reflect the diagnostic process.
Methods
Hand search of three UK journals of general practice namely the British Medical Journal (general practice section), British Journal of General Practice and Family Practice over a one-year period (1 January to 31 December 2000).
Results
A wide variety of statistical techniques were used. The most common methods included t-tests and Chi-squared tests. There were few articles reporting likelihood ratios and other useful diagnostic methods. There was evidence that the journals with the more thorough statistical review process reported a more complex and wider variety of statistical techniques.
Conclusions
The BMJ had a wider range and greater diversity of statistical methods than the other two journals. However, in all three journals there was a dearth of papers reflecting the diagnostic process. Across all three journals there were relatively few papers describing randomised controlled trials thus recognising the difficulty of implementing this design in general practice
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: The LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts
We present a multi-wavelength analysis of eleven Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect
(SZE)-selected galaxy clusters (ten with new data) from the Atacama Cosmology
Telescope (ACT) southern survey. We have obtained new imaging from the Large
APEX Bolometer Camera (345GHz; LABOCA) on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment
(APEX) telescope, the Australia Telescope Compact Array (2.1GHz; ATCA), and the
Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (250, 350, and ;
SPIRE) on the Herschel Space Observatory. Spatially-resolved 345GHz SZE
increments with integrated S/N > 5 are found in six clusters. We compute 2.1GHz
number counts as a function of cluster-centric radius and find significant
enhancements in the counts of bright sources at projected radii . By extrapolating in frequency, we predict that the combined
signals from 2.1GHz-selected radio sources and 345GHz-selected SMGs contaminate
the 148GHz SZE decrement signal by ~5% and the 345GHz SZE increment by ~18%.
After removing radio source and SMG emission from the SZE signals, we use ACT,
LABOCA, and (in some cases) new Herschel SPIRE imaging to place constraints on
the clusters' peculiar velocities. The sample's average peculiar velocity

Research evidence underpins best practice, but is not always used in healthcare. The Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) framework suggests that the nature of evidence, the context in which it is used, and whether those trying to use evidence are helped (or facilitated) affect the use of evidence. Urinary incontinence has a major effect on quality of life of older people, has a high prevalence, and is a key priority within European health and social care policy. Improving continence care has the potential to improve the quality of life for older people and reduce the costs associated with providing incontinence aids
A Natural Experiment on Innovation Without Patents
Innovation occurs within a complex web of law. Of the myriad legal doctrines that affect innovation, the most directly relevant is intellectual property, particularly patent law. The United States Constitution, in Article I, Section 8, states a strong public policy goal for the granting of patents (and copyrights) to inventors: “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.” Despite the Founding Fathers’ apparent faith in the societal benefits afforded by patent protection, a crescendo of recent critics have accused the patent system of complicating, slowing, or even thwarting innovation. Patents certainly present significant hurdles for open and user innovation. Moreover, von Hippel (2005) and Strandburg (2008) have demonstrated that user innovators, especially individuals, tend to be poorly served, and often harmed, by the patent system
On the Redshift Distribution and Physical Properties of ACT-Selected DSFGs
We present multi-wavelength detections of nine candidate gravitationally-lensed dusty starforming galaxies (DSFGs) selected at 218 GHz (1.4 mm) from the ACT equatorial survey. Among the brightest ACT sources, these represent the subset of the total ACT sample lying in Herschel SPIRE fields, and all nine of the 218 GHz detections were found to have bright Herschel counterparts. By fitting their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with a modified blackbody model with power-law temperature distribution, we find the sample has a median redshift of 4.1 (+ 1.1, -10) (68 percent confidence interval), as expected for 218 GHz selection and an apparent total infrared luminosity of log 10(uL(sub IR)/solar luminosity) = 13.86(+0.33, -0.30), which suggests that they are either strongly lensed sources or unresolved collections of unlensed DSFGs. The effective apparent diameter of the sample is square root of mu d = 4.2 (+ 1.7, -1.0) kpc, further evidence of strong lensing of multiplicity, since the typical diameter of dusty star-forming galaxies is 1.0-2.5 kpc. We emphasize that the effective apparent diameter derives from SED modeling without the assumption of opticaly thin dust (as opposed to image morphology). We find that the sources have substantial optical depth (tau = (4.2+, -1.9) of dust around the peak in the modified blackbody spectrum (lambda obs is less than 500 micrometers), a result that is robust to model choice
