O escritor e a (I Grande) Guerra: testemunho e comemoração

De molde a explorar as modalidades de representação e o trabalho de memória (Ricoeur 2000] em torno da I Guerra, debruçar-me-ei sobre duas obras literárias separadas entre si por um século: A malta das trincheiras [1918], um conjunto de crónicas do escritor português, André Brun, e 14 [ 2012), romance do escritor francês, Jean Echenoz. Além da respectiva contextualização no quadro comunicacional em que se integra a literatura, a minha leitura relacional propõe-se destacar as mudanças na representação da Grande Guerra a partir do papel quer do humor na relação com a experiência, quer da ironia na relação com o passado evanescente

Insuficiência ovárica prematura : análise da associação a outras falências endócrinas

Trabalho final de mestrado integrado em Medicina àrea científica de Ginecologia, apresentado à Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de CoimbraA Insuficiência Ovárica Prematura caracteriza-se pela existência de uma disfunção primária do ovário que impede o correcto desempenho das suas funções enquanto órgão reprodutivo e endócrino em mulheres antes dos 40 anos de idade. Trata-se de um distúrbio que afecta cerca de 1% das mulheres com menos de 40 anos, 1:1000 mulheres com 30 anos e 1:10000 mulheres com 20 anos. Através da revisão da literatura, pretende-se definir o quadro clínico associado a este distúrbio, as etiologias implicadas e os meios de diagnóstico e terapêutica disponíveis, analisando a associação desta patologia com outras disfunções endócrinas. Estão identificados dois mecanismos patogénicos responsáveis pela Insuficiência Ovárica Prematura: depleção e disfunção folicular. Existem múltiplas etiologias implicadas, assumindo o factor genético e a auto-imunidade um papel importante; no entanto, na maioria dos casos não se encontra uma causa específica. A Insuficiência Ovárica Prematura manifesta-se clinicamente de forma heterogénea, variando o seu espectro clínico desde as irregularidades menstruais até à amenorreia. Trata-se de um exemplo de hipogonadismo hipergonadotrófico. As consequências são múltiplas e graves e relacionam-se directamente com o hipoestrogenismo em causa: infertilidade, disfunção neuro-endócrina, patologia cardiovascular e osteoporose, entre outras. Dadas as implicações, é importante uma orientação diagnóstica e terapêutica precoce e correcta, de modo a tentar diminuir as consequências do défice hormonal implicado. Revela-se essencial a implementação de uma adequada terapêutica hormonal de substituição bem como a abordagem da infertilidade. Pelas consequências já descritas, assume-se de fulcral importância a sistematização do conhecimento sobre esta disfunção endócrina e reprodutiva, nomeadamente no âmbito da GinecologiaPremature Ovarian Insufficiency is characterized by a primary ovarian dysfunction that prevents the proper performance of its functions as a reproductive and endocrine organ in women before the age of 40. It is a disorder that affects about 1% of women younger than 40 years, 1:1000 of women aged 30 and 1:10000 of women by the age of 20. Through literature review, the aim of this work is the definition of the clinical symptoms and signs, causes, diagnostic approach and treatment of this disorder, analyzing the association of this condition to other endocrine failures. There are two pathogenic mechanisms identified as responsible for Premature Ovarian Insufficiency: follicular depletion and dysfunction. There are multiple etiologies involved, assuming the genetic factor and the autoimmunity an important role; however, the majority of cases do not have a specific cause. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency manifests with a heterogeneous clinical spectrum ranging from menstrual irregularities to amenorrhea. It is an example of hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism. The consequences are multiple and severe and 4 directly concerned with hypoestrogenism: infertility, neuroendocrine dysfunction, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, among others. Given the implications, early and correctly diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are very important, in order to reduce the consequences of the involved hormone deficiency. It is essential the implementation of an adequate hormone replacement therapy and the approach of infertility. Given the consequences described above, the understanding of this endocrine and reproductive disruption assumes a central role, particularly in the context of Gynecology

The competitiveness of the China and India in the European Union

Master in International Economics and European StudiesThis paper aims to examine the Competitiveness of China and India in the European Union based on the international trade values, during the time period 2001- 2009. It firstly reflects about the ambiguous definition of Competitiveness as well as the diversity of methods that exist to measure this concept. Subsequently, the following work seeks to analyse the exports growth of China and India in particular to the European market. Therefore, some methodologies were used in this paper: the Revealed Comparative Advantage analysis, which seeks to capture the products where China and India present Comparative advantage at world’s level; the Constant Market Share analysis, which pretends to verify if the Competitiveness explain the export growth to the European market; and the analysis based on the combination of the Trade Complementarity Index with the Geographical Orientation Index, which permits to identity the products where there is room, for China and India, to expand their exports to the European Union, under certain circumstances. The empirical analysis suggests that China’s and India’s exports are competitive in products identified by the three methodologies, having in many of them capacity to increase their exports to the European market. However, there still persist high levels of trade protection applied by the European Union, which can explain why China’s and India’s exports have not yet take advantage of their full potential

Evidência empírica na abordagem sobre as consequências da exposição à violência interparental

As crianças expostas à violência interparental são vítimas indirectas mas igualmente vulneráveis. Neste artigo propomos fazer uma revisão da literatura empírica sobre o impacto nas crianças da exposição à violência interparental. Apresentamos o “estado da arte”, focando os principais resultados empíricos que documentam, de forma ampla, as múltiplas consequências, a curto e longo prazo, da exposição à violência interparental no ajustamento psicológico das crianças. No final tecemos algumas considerações de cariz conceptual, metodológico e interpretativo inerente à investigação e seus resultados. Children exposed to interparental violence are indirect victims and they are also vulnerable. In this article we propose a revision of the empiric literature about the impact that the exposure to interparental violence has on children. We present the “state of the art” in the phenomeno’s study, focusing our attention on the empirical results that widely document the multiple consequences, in the short and long term, of the exposure to interparental violence in the children’s psychological adjustment. In the end we will draw some conceptual, methodological and interpretational conclusions concerning our research and its results

A experiência de vitimação de crianças acolhidas em casa de abrigo

Este artigo apresenta um estudo qualitativo que analisou o ajustamento psicológico de nove crianças em acolhimento à luz dos significados atribuídos à experiência de violência familiar. O ajustamento da criança pode ser melhor compreendido se partirmos do seu ponto de vista e percebermos como atribui significado à sua experiência. Os resultados reforçam a posição inicial de que a exposição à violência interparental tem um impacto profundo e complexo no funcionamento psicológico da criança. This article presents a qualitative research that analyses the psychological adjustment of nine children in shelters in the light of the meanings attributed to the family violence experience. The child’s adjustment can be better understood if we take their point of view and consider the meaning they give to their experience. The results strengthen the initial belief that the exposure to interparental violence has a negative and complex impact in the child’s psychological adjustment

Preschoolers developing words and worlds

This is a participatory project developed in a Portuguese kindergarten and organized into two phases. The first is the development of a multidisciplinary activity plan made for and with children. The goal is to work with children in a TALK area inside the classroom to improve language, and to initiate them into Information Communication Technologies (ICT) skills promoting Media Education (ME) as well. In Portugal, ICT integration is rarely implemented at kindergarten age, and frequently uses dependent technologies (requiring adult assistance). On the other hand, in literature tangible interfaces are considered a good approach to fulfill child abilities and start digital literacy. The second phase intends to update a low-cost manipulative to the same end: a digital flannel board. Nevertheless, children are its design builders, and as co-researchers they will plan, execute, explore, play and evaluate their own interface.CIE

What determines the export performance? : a comparative analysis of China and India in the European Union

This paper aims to assess the competitiveness of exports of manufactured goods from China and India to the European Union in the 2000s. The empirical analysis is based on two methodologies: (i) a Constant Market Share analysis which allows to decompose the export growth to the European market into several components including an effect usually related to competitiveness, and (ii) an analysis based on the combination of revealed comparative advantage indexes with a geographic orientation of trade which allows to identify the products of China and India that appear to have export potential

As Jovens e a Contraceção de Emergência: Vivências da sexualidade

Resumo Ser adolescente…jovem faz parte do percurso do ser humano no seu crescimento e desenvolvimento. É dos períodos da vida mais saudáveis e de conquista que se têm ao longo da vida. No entanto, atendendo aos comportamentos de risco, nomeadamente aos que surgem naturalmente fruto desta fase de desenvolvimento, e às novas realidades com que os jovens se defrontam socialmente no seu quotidiano, torna-se pertinente entender este período de vida e as particularidades que nele assume a sexualidade. Com Portugal a ocupar o lugar cimeiro entre os jovens europeus infetados com o VIH/SIDA (Frade et al., 2006; Matos, 2010) e com gravidezes indesejadas, a sexualidade na adolescência é um tema importante na atualidade portuguesa. O presente estudo teve como objetivos: compreender os significados atribuídos pela jovem à vivência da sua sexualidade; compreender os significados atribuídos pela jovem à experiência de utilização de contraceção de emergência. Participaram no estudo vinte e três (23) jovens do sexo feminino, todas utilizadoras do Gabinete de Apoio à Sexualidade Juvenil, de uma Delegação Regional da Zona Centro do Instituto Português da Juventude. Recorreu-se a uma abordagem fenomenológica, tendo-se para o efeito selecionado a entrevista semiestruturada como instrumento de colheita de dados. Para a análise dos dados optou-se pela proposta de Análise Fenomenológica de Max Van Manen (1997). Dessa análise emergiram cinco grandes temas. Este artigo analisa um desses grandes temas: a Contraceção de Emergência como recurso na gravidez indesejada. São apresentadas diferentes subcategorias e subsubcategorias. As jovens manifestam uma forte preocupação com as gravidezes indesejadas, mas o uso inadequado de métodos contracetivos e o recurso a métodos pouco eficazes levam-nas ao uso da Contraceção de Emergência em situações extremas. Está subjacente a toda esta prática, a falta de preocupação com as Infeções Sexualmente Transmissíveis (IST).Abstract Being an adolescent…a youth, is part of the path in a human being’s growth and development. It is a period of life brimming with health, achievement and promise. Nevertheless, due to risk behaviours, including those which occur as a natural part of this stage of development and the new realities adolescents face in their day-to-day social lives, it is worth understanding this period of life as well as the particular part sexuality plays in it. With Portugal in the top position among young Europeans infected with HIV/AIDS (Frade et al., 2006; Matos, 2010) and unwanted pregnancies, adolescent sex is an important issue in Portugal today. The aim of this study was to understand the meanings attributed by adolescents to experience their sexuality and to understand the meanings attributed by adolescents to experience of use of emergency contraception for some young users of the Youth Sexuality Support Office [Gabinete de Apoio à Sexualidade Juvenil] of a Delegation for the Central Region [Delegação Regional da Zona Centro] of the Portuguese Youth Institute [Instituto Português da Juventude] by a phenomenological approach. A semi-structured interview was used to collect the data and twenty-three (23) young women participated in the study. The Max Van Manen (1997) Phenomenological Analysis was selected to analyse the data. From this analysis, five major themes emerged. This article examines one of these topics: Emergency Contraception as a resource in unwanted pregnancies. We present different subcategories and sub-subcategories. The young females showed a strong preoccupation with unwanted pregnancy by the inadequate use of contraception and ineffective methods leading to requiring emergency contraception in extreme situations. An underlying issue to this entire practice is the lack of concern regarding Sexually Transmitted Diseases
