The paper uses data from a recent survey on Brazilian firms to investigate the role of technology in the internationalization of firms, and whether if affects the destination of foreign investments. Emerging markets FDI is a much-debated topic these days, and their technology-seeking purpose is a strong driver for the internationalization, as firms are searching for assets in order to compete. We apply a logit model to seek for the influence of determinants and some firms’ competitive advantages on the choice for developed countries as a destination for Brazilian FDI. We also test which modes of entry are preferred when investing in a developed destination. Our results point out the importance of a skilled labor force on the decisions to invest in developed destinations. We found out that technology is an asset used as a competitive resource, and that Brazilian firms do not undertake technology-seeking investments in developed countries, and that acquisitions and Greenfield investments are the main modes of entry.foreign direct investments, emerging markets, technology, innovation, competitive advantages, multinational corporations

Introduction: The evaluation is a focal point of a good rehabilitation, however the visual clinical evaluation can be fallible and variable between observers. Objective: To determine the agreement between human observers in the classification of the Thomas test (TT), modified Thomas test (TTM) and Portuguese version of the Thomas test (VPTT) and compare these observations against a kinematic analysis system. Methods: Comparison of the three-dimensional kinematic analysis of the Thomas test, modified Thomas and the Portuguese version of the Thomas test using the Qualisys Oqus Camera Series system versus the visual classification of 20 human observers last year physical therapy students through the analysis of agreement between observers by the Fleiss kappa Results: Kappa values when discriminated by the different lower limbs were higher in TTM of the right leg and lower in the VPTT of the lower left limb. The TTM test presented larger differences and the VPTT presented smaller differences. Conclusions: It can be concluded that VPTT is the test whose classification has the highest agreement when compared to the kinematic analysis system and among humans.N/

After almost a decade of study, research, and dissemination in the field of philosophy for children (p4c), the University of the Azores has created a Master’s degree in Philosophy for Children. While it may appear to be just another university course of study in the academic field of philosophy, we believe that this Master’s is a case study in its own right, as it has allowed us to think about what p4c is capable of when it takes over the university. Not only has the Master’s degree helped shape p4c, but p4c has itself driven the development of the Master’s. Through this process, a different way of existing “within the university” emerges, revealing points worthy of attention that conventional academia does not always value. This article reflects on some of the ideas relating to this process and, without any pretension of establishing rules or claiming to be a finished product, offers some considerations that in our view constitute a turning point for the way people exist within the university. After experiencing a Master’s based upon p4c, neither the university nor philosophy itself can be understood in the same way as before. What is it about p4c, then, that makes it capable of transforming whatever it touches

Small, silent and (in)significant: childhood as a minoritarian experience of education

    Get PDF
It is possible to question and deconstruct the roots of some educational conceptions of childhood through approaches that find different ways of thinking about children, childhood, and even to experience education. Philosophy has contributed to some of these approaches by deconstructing and reconstructing the Western dominant ideas of rationality and its uses in education. In this chapter, I will approach these critical movements through disruptive provocations grounded in three concepts: small, silent, and (in)signi fi cant. These concepts are commonly associated with descriptive and normative images of childhood: what it is and is expected of children. By retaking these concepts, I will problematize the impact of Western rationality on the ways education has been thought and practiced.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

What are we saying when we say we listen to children’s voices?

    Get PDF
Listening to children is commonly associated with improving educational environments. Many educators believe that granting children more opportunities to express their voices can promote verbalisation skills and boost academic performance. In many schools, the pedagogy of the community of inquiry is adopted to meet such instrumental ends. It is also common to talk about the importance of children’s voices as a resource to improve the quality of life. Since children have thought-provoking perspectives on almost everything, their utterances are welcomed as novel, or enchanting. This stance fits with the promotion of creativity as a core competence for innovation and entrepreneurship in neoliberal societies. Concepts such as ‘inclusion’ and ‘rights’ have permeated discourses about childhood in a striking and unquestioned way. These words have become popular slogans in movements advocating for children and their right to participation. Discourses on listening and voice often reproduce an adultism, rationalist bias in educational relationships. What do we ask children? What do we hear in their answers? Do we really acknowledge that children have a voice of their own? Or are we just listening to what endorses our own experiences? What if using the words ‘voice’ and ‘listen’ is not enough (Lundy, 2007)? Should we return to those very same words?info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Forecasting banking crises in developing countries: a dynamic probit approach

    Get PDF
Banking crises have afflicted economies in developing countries at least as much as they have in developed ones. In this paper, we discuss possible indicators that allow an effective forecast of banking crises based on an historical analysis of past crises, and develop several probit models, using yearly data from 1960 to 2014 for 33 developing countries across Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific. We find that a dynamic probit model which incorporates exuberance dummy variables gives the best forecasting results. Data on exports, inflation, broad money and birth rate provide the best indicators across the different models tested
