Technologies for Coal based Hydrogen and Electricity Co-production Power Plants with CO2 Capture

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plants allow the combination of the production of hydrogen and electricity because coal gasification process produces a syngas that can be used for the production of both commodities. A hydrogen and electricity power plant has been denominated as HYPOGEN. This report starts by reviewing the basics of the coal gasification process and continues by trying to map all the technological options currently available in the market as well as possible future trends that can be included in a HYPOGEN system . Besides, it offers an overview of the operating conditions and outputs of each process in order to provide the modeller with a useful information tool enabling an easier analysis of compatibilities and implementation of the model.JRC.F.7-Energy systems evaluatio

Stress and sex determination in fish: From brain to Gonads

    Get PDF
Fish present remarkable malleability regarding gonadal sex fate. This phenotypic plasticity enables an organism to adapt to changes in the environment by responding with different phenotypes. The gonad and the brain present this extraordinary plasticity. These organs are involved in the response to environmental stressors to direct gonadal fate, inducing sex change or sex reversal in hermaphroditic and gonochoristic fish, respectively. The presence of such molecular and endocrine plasticity gives this group a large repertoire of possibilities against a continuously changing environment, resulting in the highest radiation of reproduction strategies described in vertebrates. In this review, we provide a broad and comparative view of tremendous radiation of sex determination mechanisms to direct gonadal fate. New results have established that the driving mechanism involves early response to environmental stressors by the brain plus high plasticity of gonadal differentiation and androgens as by-products of stress inactivation. In addition to the stress axis, two other major axes – the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, which are well known for their participation in the regulation of reproduction – have been proposed to reinforce brain-gonadal interrelationships in the fate of the gonad.Fil: Castañeda Cortes, Diana Carolina. Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Carbon Dioxide in the European Energy System

    Get PDF
Enhanced oil recovery using carbon dioxide (CO2-EOR) is a method that can increase oil production beyond what is typically achievable using conventional recovery methods by injecting, and hence storing, carbon dioxide (CO2) in the oil reservoir. This report indicates that the maximum technical potential for increased oil recovery is significant while the CO2 storage capacity is relatively small. A detailed economic analysis suggests that at the oil rpcies of today and with a financial incentive for CO2 storage, a number of CO2-EOR operations could be viable in the North Sea. These projects can contribute to the improvement of the European security of supply by increasing indigenous oil production, and assist in the reduction of GHG emissions and catalyse the development of decarbonised energy conversion technologies by providing the means for safe and permanent storage of CO2.JRC.F.2-Cleaner energie

Digitizing collections: a reflection on negative archive collections, prioritizing procedures and what is lost

    Get PDF
A common practice today, for photograph collections, is to create images databases available (or not) on-line. Usually, this is regarded as an added value to the collection, especially for making it available outside its community. This paper focuses on the values that define and prioritize the digitizing process of negative photograph archive collections. A reflection is made on the effects of mass digitization, how are the negatives being represented in their digitized versions and what does this mean for future generations. In this digital age, when the knowledge about historical photographic processes has become the knowledge of experts, the need for complete and comprehensive records is paramount to ensure the passing on of knowledge and, consequently, the preservation of the negative collectionsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Retouching the third dimension: the Aurélio da Paz dos Reis stereoscopic negatives archive

    Get PDF
The paper explores photography retouching, particularly its use in dry plate stereoscopic negatives. The materials and techniques used and their relationship with the retouching practice in non-stereoscopic photography are discussed. This research focuses on the Portuguese photographer Aurélio da Paz dos Reis's collection of negatives, and how he used retouching for the composition of his stereoscopic portraits. These are studio-like portraits, and today they are a reminder of the artistic society, with whom the photographer had a close relationship and other celebrities. Better known for event and general outdoor photography, this paper presents a contribution to the characterization of a less studied type of photography by this author. Also, these portraits witness the photographic techniques of their time and how the photographic portrait and retouching always had a special place in the history of photography.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Memory recaptured in a small community: preserving retouched photographic negatives, discussing visual culture

This paper focus on a private portrait photographic negatives collection belonging to Foto-Carvalho, a photo-graphic studio of Estremoz (north of Alentejo, Portugal). It explores the techniques, materials, and reasons behind retouching on photographic negatives; also, the validity of retouching in the search for the photographic truth. Studying dry plate photographic negatives from lesser-known collections isa special opportunity to take a closer look to a time and a place. This case study on a Portuguese community will bring new and valued insights to portrait photography and contributions to visual culture of the first half of the 20th century.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
