    Efecto de las fuentes de polen sobre el rendimiento en la extracción de aceite y perfil de ácidos grasos de las semillas de dátil (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cultivar Medjool de México

    The present investigation aimed to assess the effect of pollen sources on the mass, dimension, oil content and fatty acid profile of the seeds from female palms of the Medjool date cultivar. The palms were pollinated with Deglet Noor, Khadrawy, Medjool and Zahidi cultivars. In addition, three palms were pollinated as the treatment control. The fatty acids were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The surface morphology of date seed powder was examined using SEM, before and after n-hexane interaction. The seeds of the Medjool treatment had the greatest mass (1.42 g), but the lowest oil content (5.37% w/w); the control seeds showed smaller mass (1.21 g), but higher oil content (13.57% w/w). The proportion of fatty acids varied significantly among the treatments with respect to the control. The most abundant fatty acids were oleic (C18:1), lauric (C12:0), myristic (C14:0), palmitic (C16:0), linoleic (C18:2), and stearic (C18:0). Together these fatty acids presented a composition between 98.3 and 98.67% for treatments, and 99.0% for the control. The results indicate that the pollen sources from Deglet Noor, Khadrawy, Medjool and Zahidi cultivars had a significant effect on mass, dimension, oil content and fatty acid profile of the seeds of the date cultivar Medjool. The date seed oil could be used as edible oil, in food products, and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de las fuentes de polen, sobre la masa, dimensión, contenido de aceite y el perfil de ácidos grasos de las semillas de dátil del cultivar Medjool. Las palmas hembras del cultivar Medjool fueron polinizadas con cultivares Deglet Noor, Khadrawy, Medjool y Zahidi. Además, tres palmas fueron polinizadas como tratamiento control. Los ácidos grasos se evaluaron por cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas. La morfología de la superficie del polvo de semillas de dátil se examinó utilizando un equipo SEM, antes y después de la interacción n-hexano. Las semillas del tratamiento Medjool resultaron con mayor masa (1,42 g), pero menor contenido de aceite (5,37% p/p); la semilla control, mostró una masa más pequeña (1,21 g), pero un mayor contenido de aceite (13,57% p/p). La composición de ácidos grasos varió significativamente entre los tratamientos con respecto al control. Los ácidos grasos mayoritarios fueron: oleico (C18:1), láurico (C12:0), mirístico (C14:0), palmítico (C16:0), linoleico (C18:2) and esteárico (C18:0). En total, estos ácidos grasos alcanzan una composición entre 98.3 y 98.67% para los tratamientos, y 99.0% para el control. Los resultados indican que la fuente de polen de los cultivares Deglet Noor, Khadrawy, Medjool y Zahidi tiene un efecto significativo sobre la masa, dimensión, contenido de aceite y el perfil de ácidos grasos de la semilla del cultivar de dátil Medjool. El aceite de la semilla de dátil, podría usarse como aceite comestible, productos alimenticios, aplicaciones farmacéuticas y cosméticas

    Revisión bibliográfica sobre desarrollo y validación de un sistema automatizado para invernaderos

    Abstract: In western Huila (Colombia) the agricultural sector in greenhouse crops shows a low use of technology. There is a need to develop jobs that allow farmers improve crop conditions in greenhouses, implementing new low–cost technologies that increase crop performance. The objective of this bibliographic revision is to establish the state of the art, in order to structure the project “Validation of an automatized greenhouse system to improve the tomato crop’s productivity in La Plata, Huila”. Scientific articles from specialized databases and technical documents were reviewed from state entities devoted to agricultural research were reviewed with the aim of learning about national and international research about the design, methodology and system development, control models and automatization applied to precision agriculture, production of tomato’s under cover crops in controlled environments and agroecologic conditions included  their respective cost and prices in the colombian market. The results of the review  show in detail the metodology, development platforms, electronic devices, variety of  selected tomatoes, type of greenhouse and watering systems that will be used for the  development of the project previously mentioned.Resumen: En el Occidente del Huila (Colombia) se evidencia baja utilización de tecnología por parte del sector agrícola en los cultivos manejados bajo invernadero; se hace necesario desarrollar trabajos que permitan al agricultor mejorar las condiciones de los  cultivos bajo cubierta, implementando nuevas tecnologías a menor costo que incrementen el rendimiento de sus cultivos. El objetivo de la presente revisión bibliográfica  es establecer el estado del arte, con el fin de estructurar el proyecto Validación de un sistema automatizado de invernadero para mejorar el rendimiento del cultivo de tomate  en La Plata, Huila. Se consultaron artículos científicos en bases de datos especializadas  y documentos técnicos de entidades estatales dedicadas a la investigación en temas agropecuarios, con el fin de conocer trabajos a nivel nacional e internacional realizados  sobre metodologías de diseño y desarrollo de sistemas, modelos de control y automatización aplicados en agricultura de precisión, producción de tomate bajo cubierta  en ambientes controlados y condiciones agroecológicas con sus respectivos costos y precios en el mercado colombiano. Los resultados de dicha revisión presentan, de  manera detallada, la metodología, plataformas de desarrollo, dispositivos electrónicos,  variedad de tomate seleccionado, tipo de invernadero y riego, datos que se utilizarán para el desarrollo del proyecto mencionado

    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     The global retinoblastoma outcome study : a prospective, cluster-based analysis of 4064 patients from 149 countries

    DATA SHARING : The study data will become available online once all analyses are complete.BACKGROUND : Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular cancer worldwide. There is some evidence to suggest that major differences exist in treatment outcomes for children with retinoblastoma from different regions, but these differences have not been assessed on a global scale. We aimed to report 3-year outcomes for children with retinoblastoma globally and to investigate factors associated with survival. METHODS : We did a prospective cluster-based analysis of treatment-naive patients with retinoblastoma who were diagnosed between Jan 1, 2017, and Dec 31, 2017, then treated and followed up for 3 years. Patients were recruited from 260 specialised treatment centres worldwide. Data were obtained from participating centres on primary and additional treatments, duration of follow-up, metastasis, eye globe salvage, and survival outcome. We analysed time to death and time to enucleation with Cox regression models. FINDINGS : The cohort included 4064 children from 149 countries. The median age at diagnosis was 23·2 months (IQR 11·0–36·5). Extraocular tumour spread (cT4 of the cTNMH classification) at diagnosis was reported in five (0·8%) of 636 children from high-income countries, 55 (5·4%) of 1027 children from upper-middle-income countries, 342 (19·7%) of 1738 children from lower-middle-income countries, and 196 (42·9%) of 457 children from low-income countries. Enucleation surgery was available for all children and intravenous chemotherapy was available for 4014 (98·8%) of 4064 children. The 3-year survival rate was 99·5% (95% CI 98·8–100·0) for children from high-income countries, 91·2% (89·5–93·0) for children from upper-middle-income countries, 80·3% (78·3–82·3) for children from lower-middle-income countries, and 57·3% (52·1-63·0) for children from low-income countries. On analysis, independent factors for worse survival were residence in low-income countries compared to high-income countries (hazard ratio 16·67; 95% CI 4·76–50·00), cT4 advanced tumour compared to cT1 (8·98; 4·44–18·18), and older age at diagnosis in children up to 3 years (1·38 per year; 1·23–1·56). For children aged 3–7 years, the mortality risk decreased slightly (p=0·0104 for the change in slope). INTERPRETATION : This study, estimated to include approximately half of all new retinoblastoma cases worldwide in 2017, shows profound inequity in survival of children depending on the national income level of their country of residence. In high-income countries, death from retinoblastoma is rare, whereas in low-income countries estimated 3-year survival is just over 50%.     Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Parasitoides de Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Encontrados en Nayarit, México

    We identified fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) parasitoids in maize by collecting 1,836 first-third instar larvae during 2012 and spring-summer of 2013 at seven municipalities in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. A total of 284 larvae was parasitized, resulting in a parasitism rate of 15.4%. In the Hymenoptera Order, we identified six species of Braconidae including Chelonus cautus which is the first record for Nayarit, and three species of Ichneumonidae. Also, we identified several species from Scelionidae, Chloropidae, and Tachinidae families of Diptera. The highest rate of parasitism was 42.3% was achieved by four species in the municipality of San Pedro Lagunillas in August 2013.Se identificaron parasitoides asociados al gusano cogollero Spodoptera frugiperda (GC), mediante la colecta de 1,836 larvas de GC del primero al tercer estadio larval en maíz durante el 2012 y primavera-verano del 2013 en siete municipios del estado de Nayarit. Se colectaron 284 larvas parasitadas resultando en una tasa de parasitismo del 15.4%. Dentro del Orden Hymenoptera se identificaron seis especies parasitoides de la familia Braconidae de las cuales Chelonus cautus es el primer registro para Nayarit y tres especies de la familia Ichneumonidae. También se identificó una especie de la familia Scelionidae, así como Chloropidae y Tachinidae pertenecientes a Diptera. La tasa de parasitismo más alta fue de 42.3% ejercido por cuatro especies en el municipio de San Pedro Lagunillas en agosto de 2013
