    Coordination in parental effort decreases with age in a long‐lived seabird

    Biparental care is widespread in avian species. Individuals may match the contribution of their partner, resulting in equal parental effort, or may exploit their partner, to minimise their own investment. These two hypotheses have received much theoretical and empirical attention in short‐lived species, that change mates between seasons. However, in species with persistent pair bonds, where divorce is rare and costly, selective pressures are different, as partners share the value of future reproduction. In such species, coordination has been suggested to be adaptive and to increase early in life, as a consequence of the importance of mate familiarity. However, as birds age, an increase in re‐pairing probability occurs in parallel to a decline in their survival probability. At the point when partners no longer share future reproductive success, exploitation of a partner could become adaptive, reducing selection for coordinated effort. As such, we suggest that coordination in parental effort will decline with age in long‐lived species. Using incubation bout duration data, estimated from salt‐water immersion bio‐loggers, deployed on black‐browed albatrosses Thalassarche melanophris, we examined the correlation in incubation bout durations for sequential bouts, as a measure of coordination. Our results show that coordination is highest in inexperienced pairs (early in reproductive life) and declines throughout the lifetime of birds. This suggests that both cooperation, indicated by coordinated effort, and conflict over care occurs in this species. We find no change in individual bout duration with increasing breeding experience, and hence no support for the hypothesis that aging leads to changes in individual incubation behaviour. This is, to our knowledge, the first study to demonstrate strong coordination in parental care when pairs share future reproductive success, but a decline in coordination with age, as sexual conflict increases

    Predictive Factors for Toxicity After Primary Chemoradiation for Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer:A Systematic Review

    Purpose: Women with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) undergoing primary platinum-based chemoradiotherapy and brachytherapy often experience toxicities. Normal-tissue complication probability (NTCP) models quantify toxicity risk and aid in optimizing radiation therapy to minimize side effects. However, it is unclear which predictors to include in an NTCP model. The aim of this systematic review was to provide an overview of the identified predictors contributing to gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU), and vaginal toxicities and insufficiency fractures for LACC. Methods and Materials: A systematic search was performed and articles evaluating the relationship between predictors and toxicities in women with LACC treated with primary chemoradiation were included. The Quality In Prognosis Studies tool was used to assess risk of bias, with high-risk studies being excluded from further analysis. Relationships between dose-volume parameters, patient and treatment characteristics, and toxicity endpoints were analyzed. Results:Seventy-three studies were identified. Twenty-six had a low or moderate risk of bias and were therefore included. Brachytherapy-related dose-volume parameters of the GI tract, including rectum and bowel equivalent dose in 2 Gy fractions (EQD2) D2 cm3, were frequently related to toxicities, unlike GU dose-volume parameters. Furthermore, (recto)vaginal point doses predicted toxicities. Few studies evaluated external beam radiation therapy dose-volume parameters and identified rectum EQD2 V30 Gy, V40 Gy, and V55 Gy, bowel and bladder EQD2 V40 Gy as toxicity predictors. Also, total reference air kerma and vaginal reference length were associated with toxicities. Relationships between patient characteristics and GI toxicity were inconsistent. The extent of vaginal involvement at diagnosis, baseline symptoms, and obesity predicted GU or vaginal toxicities. Only 1 study evaluated insufficiency fractures and demonstrated lower pretreatment bone densities to be associated. Conclusions: This review detected multiple candidate predictors of toxicity. Larger studies should consider insufficiency fractures, assess dose levels from external beam radiation therapy, and quantify the relationship between the predictors and treatment-related toxicities in women with LACC to further facilitate NTCP model development for clinical use.</p

    At-sea movements of wedge-tailed shearwaters during and outside the breeding season from four colonies in New Caledonia

    International audienceThe wedge-tailed shearwater (WTS) population of New Caledonia is one of the largest in the world, yet its biology and foraging ecology are poorly known. We studied WTS from 4 colonies in New Caledonia. We examined foraging behaviour and habitats using GPS receivers and light sensors during and outside the breeding season, respectively, and compared our findings with those from other WTS populations worldwide. During breeding, New Caledonian WTS alternated short foraging trips close to the colony over the lagoon, or off the reef edge, with longer trips over distant, deep waters. Whereas neighboring colonies overlapped at sea, especially during short trips, there was a clear separation of foraging zones between the pairs of colonies located in the southern versus northwestern parts of New Caledonia. Although WTS actively foraged and commuted to foraging zones during the day, they mainly returned to the colony or rested at night, indicating that they feed mainly during the day. Active foraging did not take place in more productive areas, suggesting that it may instead be related to the presence of sub-surface predators. Outside the breeding season, birds from 3 colonies had similar trans-equatorial migratory behaviour. All left New Caledonia at the same time of the year with a fast, northeasterly movement and wintered over deep waters in the same sector of the northwestern tropical Pacific Ocean. At overwintering sites, they spent most of their non-foraging time presumably sitting on the water, especially at night, making a slow westward movement before returning to New Caledonia. WTS from New Caledonia forage over warm, oligotrophic deep waters throughout their life cycle, and the species appears to have a flexible foraging strategy adapted to the various environmental conditions encountered across its wide tropical range

    Increased cerebral blood flow velocities assessed by transcranial Doppler examination is associated with complement activation after cardiopulmonary bypass

    The role of complement activation on the cerebral vasculature after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is unclear. The goal of the study was to assess whether heparin-coated CPB reduces complement activation, and influences cerebral blood flow velocities (CBFV). Twenty-four patients undergoing coronary surgery were randomly allocated to non-coated (NC-group) or heparin-coated (HC-group) CPB. Complement activation was assessed by measuring sC5b-9. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) was performed on middle cerebral arteries before and after CPB. Systolic (SV), diastolic (DV) and mean (MV) CBFV were measured. Significant increase of sC5b-9 (p=0.003) was observed in the NC-group and CBFV increased after CPB (SV by 27%, p=0.05; DV by 40%, p=0.06; MV by 33%, p=0.04) whereas no changes were detected in the HC-group. TCD values were higher in the NC-group than in the HC-group (SV, p=0.04; DV, p=0.03; MV, p=0.03) although cardiac index, systemic vascular resistance, haematocrit and pCO2 were similar. Postoperative SV, DV and MV were significantly correlated with sC5b-9 (r=0.583, p=0.009; r=0.581, p=0.009; r=0.598, p=0.007, respectively). Increased CBFV after CPB are correlated to the level of complement activation and may be controlled by heparin-coated circuits

    Segmentation and kinematics of the North America-Caribbean plate boundary offshore Hispaniola

    We explored the submarine portions of the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden Fault zone (EPGFZ) and the Septentrional–Oriente Fault zone (SOFZ) along the Northern Caribbean plate boundary using high-resolution multibeam echo-sounding and shallow seismic reflection. The bathymetric data shed light on poorly documented or previously unknown submarine fault zones running over 200 km between Haiti and Jamaica (EPGFZ) and 300 km between the Dominican Republic and Cuba (SOFZ). The primary plate-boundary structures are a series of strike-slip fault segments associated with pressure ridges, restraining bends, step overs and dogleg offsets indicating very active tectonics. Several distinct segments 50–100 km long cut across pre-existing structures inherited from former tectonic regimes or bypass recent morphologies formed under the current strike-slip regime. Along the most recent trace of the SOFZ, we measured a strike-slip offset of 16.5 km, which indicates steady activity for the past ~1.8 Ma if its current GPS-derived motion of 9.8 ± 2 mm a−1 has remained stable during the entire Quaternary.Depto. de GeodinĂĄmica, EstratigrafĂ­a y PaleontologĂ­aFac. de Ciencias GeolĂłgicasTRUEpu

    Natural anti-CCR5 antibodies in HIV-infection and -exposure

    Natural antibodies constitute a first-line of defence against pathogens; they may also play other roles in immune regulation and homeostasis, through their ability to bind host antigens, surface molecules and receptors. Natural anti-CCR5 antibodies can be decisive in preventing HIV infection in mucosal tissues and offer prompt and effective protection just at major sites of virus entry. Among natural anti-CCR5 antibodies, IgG and IgA to the ECL1 domain have been shown to block HIV effectively and durably without causing harm to the host. Their biological properties and their uncommon generation in subsets of HIV-infected and HIV-exposed individuals (so called ESN) will be introduced and discussed, with the aim at exploiting their potential in therapy and prevention
