    Flow-based approach for holistic factory engineering and design

    The engineering of future factories requires digital tools along life cycle phases from investment planning to ramp-up. Manufacturers need scientific-based integrated highly dynamic data management systems for the participative and integrated factory planning. The paper presents a new approach for the continuously integrated product design, factory and process planning, through a service-oriented architecture for the implementation of digital factory tools. A first prototype of the digital factory framework has been realised by a comprehensive scenario for factory, equipment and process planning. The phases of factory operation and equipment maintenance are integrated, as well. The enabling technologies, grid computing and workflow management, which supports the comprehensive and integrated engineering of products, factory and processes are shortly introduced

    Energy landscape and band-structure tuning in realistic MoS2/MoSe2 heterostructures

    While monolayer forms of two-dimensional materials are well characterized both experimentally and theoretically, properties of bilayer heterostructures are not nearly so well known. We employ high-accuracy linear-scaling density functional theory calculations utilizing nonlocal van der Waals functionals to explore the possible constructions of the MoS2/MoSe2 interface. Utilizing large supercells, we vary rotation, translation, and separation of the layers without introducing unrealistic strain. The energy landscape shows very low variations under rotation, with no strongly preferred alignments. By unfolding the spectral function into the primitive cells, we show that the monolayers are more independent than in homo-bilayers and that the electronic band structure of each layer is tunable through rotation, thus influencing hole effective masses.The authors acknowledge the support of the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability.     Mining the ESO WFI and INT WFC archives for known Near Earth Asteroids. Mega-Precovery software

    The ESO/MPG WFI and the INT WFC wide field archives comprising 330,000 images were mined to search for serendipitous encounters of known Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). A total of 152 asteroids (44 PHAs and 108 other NEAs) were identified using the PRECOVERY software, their astrometry being measured on 761 images and sent to the Minor Planet Centre. Both recoveries and precoveries were reported, including prolonged orbital arcs for 18 precovered objects and 10 recoveries. We analyze all new opposition data by comparing the orbits fitted before and after including our contributions. We conclude the paper presenting Mega-Precovery, a new online service focused on data mining of many instrument archives simultaneously for one or a few given asteroids. A total of 28 instrument archives have been made available for mining using this tool, adding together about 2.5 million images forming the Mega-Archive.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomische Nachrichten (Sep 2012

    Visualizing electrostatic gating effects in two-dimensional heterostructures

    The ability to directly observe electronic band structure in modern nanoscale field-effect devices could transform understanding of their physics and function. One could, for example, visualize local changes in the electrical and chemical potentials as a gate voltage is applied. One could also study intriguing physical phenomena such as electrically induced topological transitions and many-body spectral reconstructions. Here we show that submicron angle-resolved photoemission (micro-ARPES) applied to two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures affords this ability. In graphene devices, we observe a shift of the chemical potential by 0.6 eV across the Dirac point as a gate voltage is applied. In several 2D semiconductors we see the conduction band edge appear as electrons accumulate, establishing its energy and momentum, and observe significant band-gap renormalization at low densities. We also show that micro-ARPES and optical spectroscopy can be applied to a single device, allowing rigorous study of the relationship between gate-controlled electronic and excitonic properties.Comment: Original manuscript with 9 pages with 4 figures in main text, 5 pages with 4 figures in supplement.     The tax identity for Markov additive risk processes

    Taxed risk processes, i.e. processes which change their drift when reaching new maxima, represent a certain type of generalizations of Lévy and of Markov additive processes (MAP), since the times at which their Markovian mechanism changes are allowed to depend on the current position. In this paper we study generalizations of the tax identity of Albrecher and Hipp (2007) from the classical risk model to more general risk processes driven by spectrally-negative MAPs. We use the Sparre Andersen risk processes with phase-type interarrivals to illustrate the ideas in their simplest form
