At the presentation on 1 Corinthians, I wondered why the Apostle Paul had written this piece that did not seem to be connected to the whole letter. This paper gives response to this question. The first part talks about the basic historical, social, cultural and literary contexts of the passage. The second, which is the formal analysis, considers the literary genre and the literary form of the passage, its structure and its movement. That is, how the text flows from beginning to end. The detailed analysis is a verse-by-verse discussion of 12:31 to 13:1-3. At the end there is a synthesis and reflection

Responsabilidad social empresarial, costos de transacción y competitividad sectorial en servicios públicos

La participación ciudadana y su derivada la responsabilidad social empresarial todavía no son de buen recibo en los servicios públicos. Unos, porque las sienten como una imposición cuando son un acuerdo político constitucional. Otros, como un “divertimento” del legislador que formuló la Ley 142/94, cuando son un avance cualitativo trascendental de la legislación sectorial. Y otros, como un invento de politólogos “sin oficio”, cuando constituye el hito político más significativo desde el rompimiento del pacto colonial comenzando el siglo XIX. El artículo se propone demostrar que la noción democrática de participación instaurada en la Carta de 1991, constituye una herramienta poderosa para que el sector dé el paso desde su papel competidor hacia otro altamente competitivo. El supuesto fundamental consiste en que, dada la tendencia a igualarse por lo bajo que tenderían a mostrar los costos variables de producción, las posibilidades de competir con ventaja en el mercado global pueden estar concentradas ahora, por lo tanto, en generar diferencias ostensibles en los costos fijos, siendo los de “transacción” uno de estos.   Citizen participation, like the notion of corporate social responsibility derived from it, is not seen favorably by the utilities sector. Some consider it as an imposition, when it really is the result of a political consensus laid down by the Constitution. Others see it as a form of entertainment that the Colombian Congress turned into Law 142 of 1994, when in truth it is a qualitative improvement in legislation in this industry. There are others still who understand it as the product of idle political scientists, when it really is the most significant political landmark since the breakdown of the colonial pact at the beginning of the XIX century. The purpose of this article is to show that the democratic notion of citizen participation, laid down by the 1991 Constitution, is a powerful tool to assist the utilities sector in going from being merely competitive to being highly competitive. The basic assumption is that, given the tendency we would find in variable production costs to become equally low, the chances of competing profitably in the global market could therefore be concentrated now in producing notable differences in fixed costs, one of which would be “transaction costs”

Psychometric validation of a scale to evaluate agency capability in adolescents of Medellín, Colombia

To understand adolescents, from a positive development perspective, as active participants, who are historically constructed, in interaction with the contexts around them, with the capacity of questioning, choosing, and deciding the ways of positioning themselves in the world in a logic of commitment with others and with themselves, their agency capacity must be examined. Agency comes from Sen’s (1985) Capability approach and manifests its self as the attitude that a person has to understand, decide, and choose according to their principles and values. This study’s goal is to validate a questionnaire constructed to measure the agency capacity in adolescents of Medellin, Colombia. After a qualitative investigation, it was determined that agency had 18 components to measure. The instrument used had a sociodemographic part and one that measured the variables of interest. In order to do the psychometric validation, first, the questionnaire was applied to 1,422 adolescents Medellin. Then, the sample was divided into two in order to explore its internal consistency and to do exploratory and confirmatory analysis. Results showed adequate internal consistency and goodness of fit and a 3-factor solution model. This study allows to 1) increase the knowledge professionals have about adolescence in Medellin and the capabilities teenagers have; 2) contribute to the theoretical construction of the field of the positive development of adolescents, and 3) have a valid instrument to assess this capacity in adolescents in the city of Medellin.Para entender a los adolescentes, desde una perspectiva de desarrollo positivo, como participantes activos, históricamente construidos, que están en interacción con el contexto que los rodea, con la capacidad de cuestionar, elegir y decidir la forma en la que se quieren posicionarse en el mundo en una lógica de compromiso consigo mismos y con otros, debemos estudiar la capacidad de agencia. La capacidad de agencia surge del Enfoque de Capacidades de Sen (1985), esta se manifiesta como la actitud que tienen las personas para comprender, decidir y elegir de acuerdo con sus valores y principios. El propósito de este estudio es validar un cuestionario que fue construido para medir la capacidad de agencia en adolescentes de Medellín, Colombia. Tras una parte cualitativa de a investigación se encontró que la se componía de 18 variables para medir. EL instrumento utilizado tenia una parte sociodemográfica y una que median las variables de interés. Para hacer la validación psicométrica primero el cuestionario fue aplicado a 1.422 adolescentes de la ciudad. Luego, se dividió la muestra en dos para explorar su consistencia interna y hacer el análisis exploratorio y confirmatorio. Los resultados muestran una consistencia interna adecuada, una buena bondad de ajuste y un modelo de tres factores. Impacts de l'action du groupe environnemental Eau Secours! sur les politiques québécoises relatives à l'eau

Cet essai vise à mesurer la portée, sur les décisions politiques, de l’action d’un groupe environnemental qui se préoccupe de dossiers liés à l’eau. Le groupe à l’étude, appelé Eau Secours! est un groupe d’intérêt public qui a vu le jour en 1997. Nous proposons de vérifier si les actions du groupe lui permettent d’atteindre ses objectifs et nous tenterons ensuite d’examiner son répertoire d’actions. L’analyse de quatre dossiers est privilégiée : la privatisation de la gestion des eaux municipales, l’exportation massive d’eau à l’extérieur du Québec, le programme de construction de mini-centrales hydroélectriques privées, et l’élaboration d’une politique de l’eau en accord avec les principes du développement durable. Les résultats de l’étude montrent que l’utilisation par le groupe environnemental des médias de masse et le recours à des réseaux lui ont permis d’obtenir des effets positifs en ce qui a trait aux décisions gouvernementales. Cependant la participation du groupe à une consultation publique a entraîné des résultats mitigés. De manière générale, cette étude de cas montre la complexité de la relation entre un groupe environnemental et des acteurs gouvernementaux engagés à différents niveaux.In this essay, we want to measure the consequences of the use of a repertoire of actions by an environmental group on Quebec’s governmental decisions. The environmental group named Eau Secours! is a public interest group that focuses on water issues. Our goal is to evaluate whether the group is able to attain its objectives and by what means it does so. We analysed four different issues: water privatization, massive water exports in other countries, the construction of private electric dams, and the formation of a water policy based on the principles of sustainable development. The results of the study show that the use by the environmental group of the mass media and networks may have positive effects on governmental decisions. However, the participation of the group in a public consultation generated weak results. Overall, this case study shows the complexity of the relationship between an environmental group and the governmental actors involved at various levels

Osteopontin and the C-terminal peptide of thrombospondin-4 compete for CD44 binding and have opposite effects on CD133+ cell colony formation

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>C21, the C-terminal peptide of thrombospondin-4, has growth promoting activity and was discovered as one of several erythropoietin-dependent endothelial proteins. C21 stimulates red cell formation in anemic mice and is a growth factor for CD34+ and CD36+ hematopoietic cells, skin fibroblasts and kidney epithelial cells. ROD1 has been identified as an intracellular mediator. Nothing is known about the existence of putative C21 receptors on plasma membranes of target cells.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>We analyzed the nature of C21-binding proteins in cell lysates of skin fibroblasts using C21 affinity columns. The membrane receptor CD44 was identified as C21-binding protein by mass spectrometry. We were unable to demonstrate any direct involvement of CD44 on cell growth or the effect of C21 on cell proliferation. A soluble form of CD44 was synthesized in insect cells and purified from culture supernatants with a combination of PVDF filtration in the presence of ammonium sulphate and HPLC. Both osteopontin and hyaluronic acid competitively displaced Biotin-C21 binding to CD44. In a colony-forming assay using primitive CD133+ hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood, osteopontin and C21 had opposite effects and C21 reduced the inhibitory action of osteopontin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>CD44 is a C21-binding membrane protein. We could not demonstrate an involvement of CD44 in the proliferative action of C21. Nevertheless, based on the antagonism of C21 and osteopontin in hematopoietic precursors, we speculate that C21 could indirectly have a major impact on hematopoietic stem cell proliferation, by hindering osteopontin membrane binding at the level of the bone marrow niche.</p

Guía de diseño de cimentaciones superficiales prefabricadas para edificaciones

139 páginasEste trabajo se concentra en la búsqueda de las diferentes tipologías que permiten la conexión prefabricada entre columnas y zapatas. Dicha búsqueda derivó en seis principales tipologías prefabricadas usadas internacionalmente para la unión columna – zapata. Además, fue desarrollado un modelo evaluativo, apoyado en un análisis multicriterio ponderado, permitiendo seleccionar la conexión con proyección de barras como la más ventajosa de las tipologías encontradas. A partir de esto, se planteó la teoría de diseño de la zapata y del sistema de conexión elegido y se construyó una herramienta de cálculo, llamada DISET CSP. DISET CSP, permite hacer el diseño estructural tanto de la zapata como de la conexión, permitiendo almacenar los resultados al usuario y proporcionando una función de búsqueda de estos, según los parámetros representativos del diseño de ambos elementos.
