Judgment and the identity theory of truth
The identity theory of truth takes on different forms depending on whether it is combined with a dual relation or a multiple relation theory of judgment. This paper argues that there are two significant problems for the dual relation identity theorist regarding thought's answerability to reality, neither of which takes a grip on the multiple relation identity theory
Relationship between islet autoantibody status and the clinical characteristics of children and adults with incident type 1 diabetes in a UK cohort.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of children and adults with incident type 1 diabetes in contemporary, multiethnic UK, focusing on differences between the islet autoantibody negative and positive. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: 146 mainly secondary care centres across England and Wales. PARTICIPANTS: 3312 people aged ≥5 years were recruited within 6 months of a clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes via the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network. 3021 were of white European ethnicity and 291 (9%) were non-white. There was a small male predominance (57%). Young people <17 years comprised 59%. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Autoantibody status and characteristics at presentation. RESULTS: The majority presented with classical osmotic symptoms, weight loss and fatigue. Ketoacidosis was common (42%), especially in adults, and irrespective of ethnicity. 35% were overweight or obese. Of the 1778 participants who donated a blood sample, 85% were positive for one or more autoantibodies against glutamate decarboxylase, islet antigen-2 and zinc transporter 8. Presenting symptoms were similar in the autoantibody-positive and autoantibody-negative participants, as was the frequency of ketoacidosis (43%vs40%, P=0.3). Autoantibody positivity was less common with increasing age (P=0.0001), in males compared with females (82%vs90%, P<0.0001) and in people of non-white compared with white ethnicity (73%vs86%, P<0.0001). Body mass index was higher in autoantibody-negative adults than autoantibody-positive adults (median, IQR 25.5, 23.1-29.2vs23.9, 21.4-26.7 kg/m2; P=0.0001). Autoantibody-negative participants were more likely to have a parent with diabetes (28%vs16%, P<0.0001) and less likely to have another autoimmune disease (4%vs8%, P=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Most people assigned a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes presented with classical clinical features and islet autoantibodies. Although indistinguishable at an individual level, autoantibody-negative participants as a group demonstrated features more typically associated with other diabetes subtypes. Establishment of the 1st World Health Organization International Standard for Plasmodium falciparum DNA for nucleic acid amplification technique (NAT)-based assays
BACKGROUND: In order to harmonize results for the detection and quantification of Plasmodium falciparum DNA by nucleic acid amplification technique (NAT)-based assays, a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborative study was performed, evaluating a series of candidate standard preparations. METHODS: Fourteen laboratories from 10 different countries participated in the collaborative study. Four candidate preparations based upon blood samples parasitaemic for P. falciparum were evaluated in the study. Sample AA was lyophilized, whilst samples BB, CC and DD were liquid/frozen preparations. The candidate standards were tested by each laboratory at a range of dilutions in four independent assays, using both qualitative and quantitative NAT-based assays. The results were collated and analysed statistically. RESULTS: Twenty sets of data were returned from the participating laboratories and used to determine the mean P. falciparum DNA content for each sample. The mean log10 "equivalents"/ml were 8.51 for sample AA, 8.45 for sample BB, 8.35 for sample CC, and 5.51 for sample DD. The freeze-dried preparation AA, was examined by accelerated thermal degradation studies and found to be highly stable. CONCLUSION: On the basis of the collaborative study, the freeze-dried material, AA (NIBSC code No. 04/176) was established as the 1st WHO International Standard for P. falciparum DNA NAT-based assays and has been assigned a potency of 10(9) International Units (IU) per ml. Each vial contains 5 x 10(8) IU, equivalent to 0.5 ml of material after reconstitution
Multiwavelength Observations of LS I +61 303 with VERITAS, Swift and RXTE
We present results from a long-term monitoring campaign on the TeV binary LSI
+61 303 with VERITAS at energies above 500 GeV, and in the 2-10 keV hard X-ray
bands with RXTE and Swift, sampling nine 26.5 day orbital cycles between
September 2006 and February 2008. The binary was observed by VERITAS to be
variable, with all integrated observations resulting in a detection at the 8.8
sigma (2006/2007) and 7.3 sigma (2007/2008) significance level for emission
above 500 GeV. The source was detected during active periods with flux values
ranging from 5 to 20% of the Crab Nebula, varying over the course of a single
orbital cycle. Additionally, the observations conducted in the 2007-2008
observing season show marginal evidence (at the 3.6 sigma significance level)
for TeV emission outside of the apastron passage of the compact object around
the Be star. Contemporaneous hard X-ray observations with RXTE and Swift show
large variability with flux values typically varying between 0.5 and 3.0*10^-11
ergs cm^-2 s^-1 over a single orbital cycle. The contemporaneous X-ray and TeV
data are examined and it is shown that the TeV sampling is not dense enough to

Field Deployment of Prototype Antenna Tiles for the Mileura Widefield Array--Low Frequency Demonstrator
Experiments were performed with prototype antenna tiles for the Mileura
Widefield Array--Low Frequency Demonstrator (MWA-LFD) to better understand the
widefield, wideband properties of their design and to characterize the radio
frequency interference (RFI) between 80 and 300 MHz at the site in Western
Australia. Observations acquired during the six month deployment confirmed the
predicted sensitivity of the antennas, sky-noise dominated system temperatures,
and phase-coherent interferometric measurements. The radio spectrum is
remarkably free of strong terrestrial signals, with the exception of two narrow
frequency bands allocated to satellite downlinks and rare bursts due to
ground-based transmissions being scattered from aircraft and meteor trails.
Results indicate the potential of the MWA-LFD to make significant achievements
in its three key science objectives: epoch of reionziation science,

Real-time imaging of density ducts between the plasmasphere and ionosphere
Ionization of the Earth's atmosphere by sunlight forms a complex, multilayered plasma environment within the Earth's magnetosphere, the innermost layers being the ionosphere and plasmasphere. The plasmasphere is believed to be embedded with cylindrical density structures (ducts) aligned along the Earth's magnetic field, but direct evidence for these remains scarce. Here we report the first direct wide-angle observation of an extensive array of field-aligned ducts bridging the upper ionosphere and inner plasmasphere, using a novel ground-based imaging technique. We establish their heights and motions by feature tracking and parallax analysis. The structures are strikingly organized, appearing as regularly spaced, alternating tubes of overdensities and underdensities strongly aligned with the Earth's magnetic field. These findings represent the first direct visual evidence for the existence of such structures

The A-Current Modulates Learning via NMDA Receptors Containing the NR2B Subunit
Synaptic plasticity involves short- and long-term events, although the molecular mechanisms that underlie these processes are not fully understood. The transient A-type K+ current (IA) controls the excitability of the dendrites from CA1 pyramidal neurons by regulating the back-propagation of action potentials and shaping synaptic input. Here, we have studied how decreases in IA affect cognitive processes and synaptic plasticity. Using wild-type mice treated with 4-AP, an IA inhibitor, and mice lacking the DREAM protein, a transcriptional repressor and modulator of the IA, we demonstrate that impairment of IA decreases the stimulation threshold for learning and the induction of early-LTP. Hippocampal electrical recordings in both models revealed alterations in basal electrical oscillatory properties toward low-theta frequencies. In addition, we demonstrated that the facilitated learning induced by decreased IA requires the activation of NMDA receptors containing the NR2B subunit. Together, these findings point to a balance between the IA and the activity of NR2B-containing NMDA receptors in the regulation of learning
