Dynamic ground stress‐path evolution due to the railway traffic: A parametric study
In this paper, a numerical study of the geomechanical stress state evolution induced by the railway traffic is presented. The numerical model is based on a 2.5D formulation with the ability to account for the dynamic train‐track interaction. For the case study, the stress state evolution is systematized in the form of stress paths. The results obtained allow to recognize the great influence of the train speed and the presence of irregularities in the track for the behavior of the railway track. Based on the knowledge acquired during the implementation of previous parametric studies, the adequacy of the hollow cylinder torsional test to simulate the complex stress paths induced in the ground of the traffic railway is evaluated. The results obtained allow to put in perspective the simulation of these loads in laboratory, with the aim of studying the damage accumulation in the specimens.Peer Reviewe

Sponge perforating lace coral with anticancer activity
This short note reports results from a pilot study to investigate new anticancer agents from deepsea corals in which colonizing sponges were encountered. The pure white stylasterid coral fans of Errina dabneyi (Pourtalès, 1871) are a conspicuous feature on the upper bathyal slopes in Azorean waters and can be found in depths from 215 to more than 500 m (Wisshak et al. 2009; Braga-Henriques et al. 2013). From the 26 species of Errina known worldwide (most from deeper waters) (Cairns 1983), E. dabneyi seems to be endemic to the Azores Archipelago and the adjacent Mid-Atlantic Ridge region (Zibrowius & Cairns 1992; Braga-Henriques et al. 2013).

Socio-economy of peri-urban areas: the case of Lisbon metropolitan area
The chapter presents typologies of peri-urban areas of Lisbon
Metropolitan Area (LMA) regarding social and economic dimensions. These typologies
are the outcome of a trans-disciplinary research developed by the project
PERI-URBAN involving different Portuguese universities, crossing academic fi elds
and integrating the knowledge of stakeholders from diverse institutional and territorial
(local and regional) backgrounds. By bridging science and society, transdisciplinarity
allows the translation of knowledge acquired in research into useful
and relevant information for planners and decision-makers. The analysis reveals
diverse socioeconomic realities demanding different and specifi c political
approaches envisaging sustainable peri-urban territories in a changing world. The
socioeconomy of peri-urban areas considers identities and lifestyle issues (e.g., age,
family patterns, living and working conditions) and economic characteristics (e.g.,
main economic activities, economic organisation and structuring, attractiveness).
The infl uence of a metropolitan area is expressed by continuing investments in
peripheral areas that offer sources of labour and natural resources such as land. The
presence of industries, services, logistics and distribution platforms, enterprises,
housing, big store chains, etc., constitutes manifestations of this realm. Plus, and in
parallel, the coexistence of a rural-agriculture matrix establishes a hybrid territory
where distinct activities co-exist defi ning distinct degrees of specialisation/diversity

Longitudinal study in 3,000 m male runners: relationship between performance and selected physiological parameters
The purpose of the present study was to analyze longitudinal changes in 3,000 m running performance and the relationship with selected physiological parameters. Eighteen well-trained male middle-distance runners were measured six times (x3 per year) throughout two consecutive competitive seasons. The following parameters were measured on each occasion: maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), running economy (RE), velocity at maximal oxygen uptake (vVO2max), velocity at 4mmol L-1 blood lactate concentration (V4), and performance velocity (km·h-1) in 3,000 m time trials. Values ranged from 19.59 to 20.16 km·h-1, running performance; 197 to 207 mL·kg-1·km-1. RE; 17.2 to 17.7 km·h-1, V4; 67.1 to 72.5 mL·kg-1·min-1, VO2max; and 19.8 to 20.2 km·h-1, vVO2max. A hierarchical linear model was used to quantify longitudinal relationships between running performance and selected physiological variables. Running performance decreased significantly over time, between each time point the decrease in running velocity was 0.06 km·h-1. The variables that significantly explained performance changes were V4 and vVO2max. Also, vVO2max and V4 were the measures most strongly correlated with performance and can be used to predict 3,000 m race velocity. The best prediction formula for 3,000 m running performance was: y = 0.646 + 0.626x + 0.416z (R2=0.85); where y = V3,000 m velocity (km·h-1), x = V4 (km·h-1) and z = vVO2max (km·h-1). The high predictive power of vVO2max and V4 suggest that both coaches and athletes should give attention to improving these two physiological variables, in order to improve running performance

1500L, Yellow Springs, EUA). Foi utilizado um cardiofrequencímetro
para medição da frequência cardíaca (Vantage NV,
POLAR, Finlândia). Foi avaliado o consumo máximo de oxigénio
relativo (VO2-max), o consumo líquido de oxigénio (VO2-
net=VO2-max-VO2-repouso), a concentração máxima de lactato
(La-max), a concentração líquida de lactato (La-net= Lamax-
La-repouso), o quociente respiratórios (R), o volume ventilatório
(VV) e a frequência cardíaca (FC).
