INFLUENCE OF CELL WALL CALCIUM CONTENT IN FRUIT FIRMNESS DURING THE RIPENING OF PLUMS (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.).

‘Rainha Claudia Verde’ is a regional cultivar of Prunus domestica L. well adapted to a specific region in the south of Portugal. In order to understand the postharvest behavior of this cultivar produced in different orchards, cell wall poly-saccharides and cell wall calcium fruit content were studied during ripening in two consecutive years. During harvest period pectic fractions soluble in water, carbonate and KOH were prepared from alcohol-insoluble residue (AIR) of plums. Galacturonic and neutral sugars contents were measured during fruit ripening and fruit firmness was also evaluated. The calcium fruit level was determined in the AIR during harvest season as well as in dry matter. Fruit firmness was significantly higher in the second year and was probably related with calcium fruit content and pectic polysaccharides. There was a significant difference in calcium fruit content between orchards, and this might influence the overall fruit texture during the postharvest period. During fruit ripening water soluble pectic polysaccharides did not change significantly, which corresponded with the small decrease in tissue firmness. The occurrence in the supernatant of the cellulosic residue of highly branched polysaccharides might be the consequence of matrix material associated with microfibrilar phase. Depolymerization of the hemicellulosic fraction was not evident during plum ripening. The loss of fruit firmness is a consequence of many cellular events which are influenced by external factors. The knowledge of calcium content in the cell wall and the pectic poly¬saccharides could be of great importance to local farmers to predict fruit texture

Gravity with extra dimensions and dark matter interpretation: Phenomenological example via Miyamoto-Nagai galaxy

A configuration whose density profile coincides with the Newtonian potential for spiral galaxies is constructed from a 4D isotropic metric plus extra dimensional components. A Miyamoto-Nagai ansatz is used to solve Einstein equations. The stable rotation curves of such system are computed and, without fitting techniques, we recover with accuracy the observational data for flat or not asymptotically flat galaxy rotation curves. The density profiles are reconstructed and compared to that obtained from the Newtonian potential.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Brazilian Journal of Physic

The eclipse java metamodel scaffolding software engineering research on java projects with MDE techniques

    Get PDF
Java on the Eclipse IDE is a frequent choice for software development nowadays. Software Engineering researchers have built program analysis tools in that environment for several purposes. However, that requires a deep understanding of Eclipse internals, such as the Java AST. This paper discusses the feasibility of a metamodel-driven approach to scaffold the construction of such tools. Its core is the Eclipse Java Metamodel (EJMM), obtained through reverse engineering. The latter is instantiated with meta-objects representing the constructs of a given Java program. We then use OCL to traverse programs very easily. To validate the feasibility of our metamodel-driven approach to program analysis, we developed an Eclipse plug-in based on it, to support the metamodel-driven measurement (M2DM) approach.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Generalised Space-time and Gauge Transformations

    Get PDF
We consider the generalised space-time introduced by the author in 2003 in the context of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental representation. For all the fields we propose gauge transformations which are compatible with the underlying E11 structure. A crucial role is played by the generalised vielbein that the generalised space-time possess. We work out the explicit form of the gauge transformations, at low levels, in four, five and eleven dimensions.Comment: 33 page

New dextrin-vinylacrylate hydrogel : studies on protein diffusion and release

    Get PDF
New dextrin hydrogels with degrees of substitution (DS) from ca. 10% (DS 10) to 70% (DS 70) were prepared by radical polymerization of aqueous solutions of vinylacrylate (VA)-derivatized dextrin. A preliminary analysis on the potential of these hydrogels for the controlled release of bioactive molecules was carried out. The protein (bovine serum albumin) diffusion coefficients on the hydrogels were calculated using the lag-time analysis. Values in range 10−7 cm2/s were obtained for DS 20 and DS 40 and a smaller value of 10−8 cm2/s arised upon DS increasing to 70%, revealing the dependence of the diffusivity on the crosslinking density. The release of BSA from dextrin-VA hydrogels, in the presence of amyloglucosidase was shown to be mainly dependent on the diffusion and, to a smaller extent, on the degradation kinetics. The protein release can be tailored from days to months by varying the DS.This research was supported by Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia under Grant SFRH/BD/17482/2004 and FUNCARB POC-TI/BIO/45356/2002

New species of Xestoleberididae (Crustacea, Ostracoda) from Archipelago of São Pedro and São Paulo, Equatorial Atlantic

Two new species of Xestoleberididae: Xestoleberis brasilinsularis sp. nov. and Xestoleberis machadoae sp. nov., both endemic to Archipelago of São Pedro and São Paulo, are described. The record of these shallow marine waters species from Brazilian oceanic islands represents an important contribution to the knowledge of the evolutionary history the species inhabit areas

Pneumatosis Coli Treated with Metronidazole and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Successful Case
