Solvable senescence model with positive mutations
We build upon our previous analytical results for the Penna model of
senescence to include positive mutations. We investigate whether a small but
non-zero positive mutation rate gives qualitatively different results to the
traditional Penna model in which no positive mutations are considered. We find
that the high-lifespan tail of the distribution is radically changed in
structure, but that there is not much effect on the bulk of the population. Th
e mortality plateau that we found previously for a stochastic generalization of
the Penna model is stable to a small positive mutation rate.Comment: 3 figure
Monitoring and Discovering X-ray Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Regular monitoring of the SMC with RXTE has revealed a huge number of X-ray
pulsars. Together with discoveries from other satellites at least 45 SMC
pulsars are now known. One of these sources, a pulsar with a period of
approximately 7.8 seconds, was first detected in early 2002 and since discovery
it has been found to be in outburst nine times. The outburst pattern clearly
shows a period of 45.1 +/- 0.4 d which is thought to be the orbital period of
this system. Candidate outburst periods have also been obtained for nine other
pulsars and continued monitoring will enable us to confirm these. This large
number of pulsars, all located at approximately the same distance, enables a
wealth of comparative studies. In addition, the large number of pulsars found
(which vastly exceeds the number expected simply by scaling the relative mass
of the SMC and the Galaxy) reveals the recent star formation history of the SMC
which has been influenced by encounters with both the LMC and the Galaxy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, AIP conference proceedings format. Contribution

Optical studies of two LMC X-ray transients : RX J0544.1-7100 and RX J0520.5-6932
We report observations which confirm the identities of the optical
counterpart to the transient sources RX J0544.1-7100 and RX J0520.5-6932. The
counterparts are suggested to be a B-type stars. Optical data from the
observations carried out at ESO and SAAO, together with results from the OGLE
data base, are presented. In addition, X-ray data from the RXTE all-sky monitor
are investigated for long term periodicities. A strong suggestion for a binary
period of 24.4d is seen in RX J0520.5-6932 from the OGLE data.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
The Orbital Solution and Spectral Classification of the High-Mass X-Ray Binary IGR J01054-7253 in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present X-ray and optical data on the Be/X-ray binary (BeXRB) pulsar IGR
J01054-7253 = SXP11.5 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Rossi X-ray Timing
Explorer (RXTE) observations of this source in a large X-ray outburst reveal an
11.483 +/- 0.002s pulse period and show both the accretion driven spin-up of
the neutron star and the motion of the neutron star around the companion
through Doppler shifting of the spin period. Model fits to these data suggest
an orbital period of 36.3 +/- 0.4d and Pdot of (4.7 +/- 0.3) x 10^{-10}
ss^{-1}. We present an orbital solution for this system, making it one of the
best described BeXRB systems in the SMC. The observed pulse period, spin-up and
X-ray luminosity of SXP11.5 in this outburst are found to agree with the
predictions of neutron star accretion theory. Timing analysis of the long-term
optical light curve reveals a periodicity of 36.70 +/- 0.03d, in agreement with
the orbital period found from the model fit to the X-ray data. Using blue-end
spectroscopic observations we determine the spectral type of the counterpart to
be O9.5-B0 IV-V. This luminosity class is supported by the observed V-band
magnitude. Using optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy, we
study the circumstellar environment of the counterpart in the months after the

A crucial and as yet unanswered question is whether EDCs have adverse impacts on the sustainability of wildlife populations. There is widespread concern that intersex fish are reproductively compromised, with potential population-level consequences. However, to date, only in vitro sperm quality data are available in support of this hypothesis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether wild endocrine-disrupted fish can compete successfully in a realistic breeding scenario.
METHODS: In two competitive breeding experiments using wild roach (Rutilus rutilus), we used DNA microsatellites to assign parentage and thus determine reproductive success of the adults.
RESULTS: In both studies, the majority of intersex fish were able to breed, albeit with varying degrees of success. In the first study, where most intersex fish were only mildly feminized, body length was the only factor correlated with reproductive success. In the second study, which included a higher number of more severely intersex fish, reproductive performance was negatively correlated with severity of intersex. The intersex condition reduced reproductive performance by up to 76% for the most feminized individuals in this study, demonstrating a significant adverse effect of intersex on reproductive performance.
CONCLUSION: Feminization of male fish is likely to be an important determinant of reproductive performance in rivers where there is a high prevalence of moderately to severely feminized males.Funding for this work was derived through the Endocrine Disruption in Catchments project, which was supported by the U.K. Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the U.K. Environment Agency
The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud: XMMUJ005011.2-730026 = SXP214, a Be/X-ray binary pulsar
In the course of the XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a
region to the east of the emission nebula N19 was observed in November 2009. To
search for new candidates for high mass X-ray binaries the EPIC PN and MOS data
of the detected point sources were investigated and their spectral and temporal
characteristics identified. A new transient (XMMUJ005011.2-730026= SXP214) with
a pulse period of 214.05 s was discovered; the source had a hard X-ray spectrum
with power-law index of ~0.65. The accurate X-ray source location permits the
identification of the X-ray source with a ~15th magnitude Be star, thereby
confirming this system as a new Be/X-ray binary.Comment: 8 pages 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Free-form lens model and mass estimation of the high redshift galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915, "El Gordo"
We examine the massive colliding cluster El Gordo, one of the most massive
clusters at high redshift. We use a free-form lensing reconstruction method
that avoids making assumptions about the mass distribution. We use data from
the RELICS program and identify new multiply lensed system candidates. The new
set of constraints and free-form method provides a new independent mass
estimate of this intriguing colliding cluster. Our results are found to be
consistent with earlier parametric models, indirectly confirming the
assumptions made in earlier work. By fitting a double gNFW profile to the lens
model, and extrapolating to the virial radius, we infer a total mass for the
cluster of M. We
estimate the uncertainty in the mass due to errors in the photometric
redshifts, and discuss the uncertainty in the inferred virial mass due to the
extrapolation from the lens model. We also find in our lens map a mass
overdensity corresponding to the large cometary tail of hot gas, reinforcing
its interpretation as a large tidal feature predicted by hydrodynamical
simulations that mimic El Gordo. Finally, we discuss the observed relation
between the plasma and the mass map, finding that the peak in the projected
mass map may be associated with a large concentration of colder gas, exhibiting
possible star formation. El Gordo is one of the first clusters that will be
observed with JWST, which is expected to unveil new high redshift lensed
galaxies around this interesting cluster, and provide a more accurate

The binary period and outburst behaviour of the SMC X-ray binary pulsar system SXP504
A probable binary period has been detected in the optical counterpart to the
X-ray source CXOU J005455.6-724510 = RX J0054.9-7245 = AXJ0054.8-7244 = SXP504
in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This source was detected by Chandra on 04 Jul
2002 and subsequently observed by XMM-Newton on 18 Dec 2003. The source is
coincident with an Optical Gravitational Lensing (OGLE) object in the
lightcurves of which several optical outburst peaks are visible at ~ 268 day
intervals. Timing analysis shows a period of 268.6 +/- 0.1 days at > 99%
significance. Archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data for the 504s
pulse-period has revealed detections which correspond closely with predicted or
actual peaks in the optical data. The relationship between this orbital period
and the pulse period of 504s is within the normal variance found in the Corbet

Remarkable dynamics of nanoparticles in the urban atmosphere
Nanoparticles emitted from road traffic are the largest source of respiratory exposure for the general public living in urban areas. It has been suggested that the adverse health effects of airborne particles may scale with the airborne particle number, which if correct, focuses attention on the nanoparticle (less than 100 nm) size range which dominates the number count in urban areas. Urban measurements of particle size distributions have tended to show a broadly similar pattern dominated by a mode centred on 20–30 nm diameter particles emitted by diesel engine exhaust. In this paper we report the results of measurements of particle number concentration and size distribution made in a major London park as well as on the BT Tower, 160 m high. These measurements taken during the REPARTEE project (Regents Park and BT Tower experiment) show a remarkable shift in particle size distributions with major losses of the smallest particle class as particles are advected away from the traffic source. In the Park, the traffic related mode at 20–30 nm diameter is much reduced with a new mode at <10 nm. Size distribution measurements also revealed higher number concentrations of sub-50 nm particles at the BT Tower during days affected by higher turbulence as determined by Doppler Lidar measurements and indicate a loss of nanoparticles from air aged during less turbulent conditions. These results suggest that nanoparticles are lost by evaporation, rather than coagulation processes. The results have major implications for understanding the impacts of traffic-generated particulate matter on human health
