Influences on the fraction of hydrophobic and hydrophilic black carbon in the atmosphere
Black carbon (BC) is a short term climate forcer that directly warms the atmosphere, slows convection, and hinders quantification of the effect of greenhouse gases on climate change. The atmospheric lifetime of BC particles with respect to nucleation scavenging in clouds is controlled by their ability to serve as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). To serve as CCN under typical conditions, hydrophobic BC particles must acquire hygroscopic coatings. However, the quantitative relationship between coatings and hygroscopic properties for ambient BC particles is not known nor is the time scale for hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic conversion. Here we introduce a method for measuring the hygroscopicity of externally and internally mixed BC particles by coupling a single particle soot photometer with a humidified tandem differential mobility analyzer. We test this technique using uncoated and coated laboratory generated model BC compounds and apply it to characterize the hygroscopicity distribution of ambient BC particles. From these data we derive that the observed number fraction of BC that is CCN active at 0.2% supersaturation is generally low in an urban area near sources and that it varies with the trajectory of the airmass. We anticipate that our method can be combined with measures of air parcel physical and photochemical age to provide the first quantitative estimates for characterizing hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic conversion rates in the atmosphere.Peer reviewe
A new super-soft X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Discovery of the first Be/white dwarf system in the SMC?
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) hosts a large number of Be/X-ray binaries,
however no Be/white dwarf system is known so far, although population synthesis
calculations predict that they might be more frequent than Be/neutron star
systems. XMMUJ010147.5-715550 was found as a new faint super-soft X-ray source
(SSS) with a likely Be star optical counterpart. We investigate the nature of
this system and search for further high-absorbed candidates in the SMC. We
analysed the XMM-Newton X-ray spectrum and light curve, optical photometry, and
the I-band OGLE III light curve. The X-ray spectrum is well represented by
black-body and white dwarf atmosphere models with highly model-dependent
temperature between 20 and 100 eV. The likely optical counterpart AzV 281
showed low near infrared emission during X-ray activity, followed by a
brightening in the I-band afterwards. We find further candidates for
high-absorbed SSSs with a blue star as counterpart. We discuss
XMMUJ010147.5-715550 as the first candidate for a Be/white dwarf binary system
in the SMC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&
Cytokine Profiles of Stimulated Blood Lymphocytes in Asthmatic and Healthy Adolescents Cross the School Year
T cell cytokines play an important role in mediating airway inflammation in asthma. The predominance of a Th2 cytokine profile, particularly interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5, is associated with the pathogenesis and course of asthma. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a stressful life event alters the pattern of cytokine release in asthmatic individuals. Thirteen healthy controls and 21 asthmatic adolescents gave blood samples three times over a semester: midsemester, during the week of final examinations, and 2-3 weeks after examinations. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), IL-2, IL-4, and IL-5 were measured from supernatants of cells stimulated with PHA/PMA for 24 h. Cells from asthmatic subjects released significantly more IL-5 during the examination and postexamination periods, whereas cells from healthy controls released significantly more IL-2 during the midsemester and examination periods, thereby indicating a bias for a Th2-like pattern in asthmatics and a Th 1-like pattern in healthy controls. IL-4 and IL-5 production showed a marked decrease during and after examinations in healthy controls, whereas this decline was absent in asthmatics. The ratios of IFN-γ:IL-4 and IFN-γ:IL-5 also revealed significant changes in the profile of cytokine release across the semester. These results indicate differential cytokine responses in asthmatics that may become pronounced during periods of cellular activation
LensPerfect: Gravitational Lens Massmap Reconstructions Yielding Exact Reproduction of All Multiple Images
We present a new approach to gravitational lens massmap reconstruction. Our
massmap solutions perfectly reproduce the positions, fluxes, and shears of all
multiple images. And each massmap accurately recovers the underlying mass
distribution to a resolution limited by the number of multiple images detected.
We demonstrate our technique given a mock galaxy cluster similar to Abell 1689
which gravitationally lenses 19 mock background galaxies to produce 93 multiple
images. We also explore cases in which far fewer multiple images are observed,
such as four multiple images of a single galaxy. Massmap solutions are never
unique, and our method makes it possible to explore an extremely flexible range
of physical (and unphysical) solutions, all of which perfectly reproduce the
data given. Each reconfiguration of the source galaxies produces a new massmap
solution. An optimization routine is provided to find those source positions
(and redshifts, within uncertainties) which produce the "most physical" massmap
solution, according to a new figure of merit developed here. Our method imposes
no assumptions about the slope of the radial profile nor mass following light.
But unlike "non-parametric" grid-based methods, the number of free parameters
we solve for is only as many as the number of observable constraints (or
slightly greater if fluxes are constrained). For each set of source positions
and redshifts, massmap solutions are obtained "instantly" via direct matrix
inversion by smoothly interpolating the deflection field using a recently
developed mathematical technique. Our LensPerfect software is straightforward
and easy to use and is made publicly available via our website.Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, accepted by ApJ. Software and full-color

The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud: The X-ray point-source catalogue
Local-Group galaxies provide access to samples of X-ray source populations of
whole galaxies. The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)
completely covers the bar and eastern wing with a 5.6 deg^2 area in the
(0.2-12.0) keV band. To characterise the X-ray sources in the SMC field, we
created a catalogue of point sources and sources with moderate extent. Sources
with high extent (>40") have been presented in a companion paper. We searched
for point sources in the EPIC images using sliding-box and maximum-likelihood
techniques and classified the sources using hardness ratios, X-ray variability,
and their multi-wavelength properties. The catalogue comprises 3053 unique
X-ray sources with a median position uncertainty of 1.3" down to a flux limit
for point sources of ~10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the (0.2-4.5) keV band,
corresponding to 5x10^33 erg s^-1 for sources in the SMC. We discuss
statistical properties, like the spatial distribution, X-ray colour diagrams,
luminosity functions, and time variability. We identified 49 SMC high-mass
X-ray binaries (HMXB), four super-soft X-ray sources (SSS), 34 foreground
stars, and 72 active galactic nuclei (AGN) behind the SMC. In addition, we
found candidates for SMC HMXBs (45) and faint SSSs (8) as well as AGN (2092)
and galaxy clusters (13). We present the most up-to-date catalogue of the X-ray
source population in the SMC field. In particular, the known population of
X-ray binaries is greatly increased. We find that the bright-end slope of the
luminosity function of Be/X-ray binaries significantly deviates from the
expected universal high-mass X-ray binary luminosity function.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A, catalog will

Diquat Derivatives: Highly Active, Two-Dimensional Nonlinear Optical Chromophores with Potential Redox Switchability
In this article, we present a detailed study of structure−activity relationships in diquaternized 2,2′-bipyridyl (diquat) derivatives. Sixteen new chromophores have been synthesized, with variations in the amino electron donor substituents, π-conjugated bridge, and alkyl diquaternizing unit. Our aim is to combine very large, two-dimensional (2D) quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses with reversible redox chemistry. The chromophores have been characterized as their PF_6^− salts by using various techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Their visible absorption spectra are dominated by intense π → π^* intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) bands, and all show two reversible diquat-based reductions. First hyperpolarizabilities β have been measured by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering with an 800 nm laser, and Stark spectroscopy of the ICT bands affords estimated static first hyperpolarizabilities β_0. The directly and indirectly derived β values are large and increase with the extent of π-conjugation and electron donor strength. Extending the quaternizing alkyl linkage always increases the ICT energy and decreases the E_(1/2) values for diquat reduction, but a compensating increase in the ICT intensity prevents significant decreases in Stark-based β_0 responses. Nine single-crystal X-ray structures have also been obtained. Time-dependent density functional theory clarifies the molecular electronic/optical properties, and finite field calculations agree with polarized HRS data in that the NLO responses of the disubstituted species are dominated by ‘off-diagonal’ β_(zyy) components. The most significant findings of these studies are: (i) β_0 values as much as 6 times that of the chromophore in the technologically important material (E)-4′-(dimethylamino)-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate; (ii) reversible electrochemistry that offers potential for redox-switching of optical properties over multiple states; (iii) strongly 2D NLO responses that may be exploited for novel practical applications; (iv) a new polar material, suitable for bulk NLO behavior
Discovery of luminous pulsed hard X-ray emission from anomalous X-ray pulsars 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U 0142+61 and 1E 2259+586 by INTEGRAL and RXTE
We report on the discovery of hard spectral tails for energies above 10 keV
in the total and pulsed spectra of anomalous X-ray pulsars 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U
0142+61 and 1E 2259+586 using RXTE PCA (2-60 keV) and HEXTE (15-250 keV) data
and INTEGRAL IBIS ISGRI (20-300 keV) data. Improved spectral information on 1E
1841-045 is presented. The pulsed and total spectra measured above 10 keV have
power-law shapes and there is so far no significant evidence for spectral
breaks or bends up to ~150 keV. The pulsed spectra are exceptionally hard with
indices measured for 4 AXPs approximately in the range -1.0 -- 1.0. We also
reanalyzed archival CGRO COMPTEL (0.75-30 MeV) data to search for signatures
from our set of AXPs. No detections can be claimed, but the obtained
upper-limits in the MeV band indicate that for 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U 0142+61 and
1E 1841-045 strong breaks must occur somewhere between 150 and 750 keV.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 19 pages; 4 Tables; 15 Figures (6

Discovery of a Ringlike Dark Matter Structure in the Core of the Galaxy Cluster Cl 0024+17
We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl
0024+17 at z~0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strong- and weak-lensing
constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a dense distribution of background
galaxies (~120 per square arcmin) across the cluster enables the derivation of
a high-resolution parameter-free mass map. The strongly-lensed objects tightly
constrain the mass structure of the cluster inner region on an absolute scale,
breaking the mass-sheet degeneracy. The mass reconstruction of Cl 0024+17
obtained in such a way is remarkable. It reveals a ringlike dark matter
substructure at r~75" surrounding a soft, dense core at r~50". We interpret
this peculiar sub-structure as the result of a high-speed line-of-sight
collision of two massive clusters 1-2 Gyr ago. Such an event is also indicated
by the cluster velocity distribution. Our numerical simulation with purely
collisionless particles demonstrates that such density ripples can arise by
radially expanding, decelerating particles that originally comprised the
pre-collision cores. Cl 0024+17 can be likened to the bullet cluster 1E0657-56,
but viewed the collision axis at a much later epoch. In addition, we
show that the long-standing mass discrepancy for Cl 0024+17 between X-ray and
lensing can be resolved by treating the cluster X-ray emission as coming from a
superposition of two X-ray systems. The cluster's unusual X-ray surface
brightness profile that requires a two isothermal sphere description supports
this hypothesis.Comment: To appear in the June 1 issue of The Astrophysical Journa
